Powerfully Moving Film
1 April 2017
Rebecca Hall was a total revelation to me. I recognized her, but I couldn't remember where I saw her. She was absolutely amazing.

This is a sad story, but it's so beautifully told.

The script, acting, and directing are all top notch.

I wanted so badly to help this troubled person.

This film touched me deeply.

Superb
4 October 2015
The most beautiful film of all time. I just watched it again...for about my sixth or seventh time.

I found myself surprised to be in tears...often...and I'm not a "cry at movies" kind of person.

I suppose it was the unaccountable beauty of the story and characters.

By the final scene, I was a puddle...sobbing...deeply moved.

I don't know how much better art can get than this.

The acting...the cinematography...the music...the writing...the directing...

This, folks, is a masterpiece...in any language...

Subtlety Creepy and Genuinely Frightening
19 July 2015
If you're the type of horror fan who insists on extreme amounts of gore and a high on-film body count, this film is probably not for you. The build up is so slow that, at one point, I was asking myself if if this film got mistakenly categorized as a horror film.

Stick with it...it delivers...

The acting is quite good...as is the directing.

The locales are effective in that their beauty and solemnity contrast the action.

IMDb forces me to add more lines....I'm not getting paid to write this review...shove it IMDb...here's another line.......

Ballet 422 (2014)

Masterpiece
26 June 2015
I'm not a fan of ballet -- I've never been to a ballet. But I'm a huge fan of film. And I'm a documentary nerd. This documentary was perfect. I also have a high-level job in a high- pressure environment, so I was really fascinated by the intensity with which the key players prepared for the big premier. I found myself rewinding this film numerous times to re-watch scenes, because I was mesmerized by their beauty. My wife even came down and asked me, "What are you doing?"

The film does a wonderful job of showing all of the pieces that are necessary for putting together a ballet of the highest caliber. Like anything of excellence, it's hard friggin work, and somebody has to be in charge.

If you like film...and especially if you like ballet...this is a must see. Bravo.

Absolutely Horrible B Movie with Non Actors
22 March 2015
The one star I give this stinker is only because there are a couple of funny moments and lines. I also kind of appreciated the homage to The Walking Dead (the sheriff, an obvious Rick, is called Sheriff Lincoln...the last name of actor Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick in The Walking Dead).

The script is one of the worst imaginable. Jokes and gags fall cringingly flat left and right. This is only exacerbated by the horrid non acting from the cast of non actors. The plot is a silly mess. The directing is non existent.

Skip this unwatchable dretch.

It Just Doesn't Work
20 February 2015
I'll start by saying that I'm a fan of unconventional, challenging films. I admire the artistic courage it takes to try to turn a difficult book, an epic poem, whatever it is, into a bit of cinematic art. And I'm a fan of the main players in the film, particularly Joaquin Phoenix.

I was OK with the muddled, non-linear plot. But unfortunately, I found this film pretentious and...ultimately...unwatchable. I really tried not to, but, I found myself...turning it off after about 40 minutes. I was rooting for it, I really was.

It either works or it doesn't...and this one just didn't work for me.

Absolutely Horrid
30 July 2014
An abortion. In many ways, the worst big- budget film of all time. Bad acting, miscasting, miserable story, dead-boring throughout. Jennifer Connelly is abysmal. Russell Crowe is utterly wasted. They should should show this stinking pile of dung to terrorists to get them to confess. "Please, no more, I'll tell you where the bombs are!"

You have high-tech computers at your disposal...

How about emphasize the FRIGGIN FLOOD?? That's what Noah is supposed to be about!

Oh, my God does this movie suck. Please, please, please don't spend money on this abomination.

Burn this POS!!

So Many Idiotic Bad Reviews for a Truly Terrifying Film
23 May 2014
First of all, I found this film so terrifying that, about 45 minutes into it, I felt a little sweaty, nauseous, edgy, with heart palpitations. How so many dumb ass reviewers could pan this outstanding, subtly and smartly crafted, well-acted, beautifully directed, sublimely photographed, scary as fk film is completely dumbfounding. I was so irked by these unaccountably bad reviews (Confirms to me once and for all that IMDb has fully and irrevocably jumped the shark when it comes to user reviews...just look at how many shtt movies in here are rated as 7 plus).

If you're a smart and faithful fan of horror like me, you should not miss this film --- one of the scariest horror films I've seen in 40 years. I don't think I have the stomach or nerves to watch it again.

Cringe-Worthy, Unwatchable Mess
10 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Three minutes into this film, the director had already made about a half dozen poor choices. The script is beyond bad. If there was any real drama in this murky, pretentious, clichéd morass of cinematic incompetence it was trying to decide which was worse as you watched, the directing or the God-awful script (one sign of a really bad script is that you can guess exactly what the actors are going to say...as Imdid 100% of the time in this film). Joe shows up at a whorehouse. Joe encounters a barking dog. Joe goes and gets a dog to kill this dog...which did nothing but bark at him a little. Very soon afterward, Joe orders one of the girls to "Blow me." But Joe is "good people."

And if you just want to watch this train wreck for Nicholas Cage's supposed amazing performance, don't bother. He could not come remotely close to redeeming this steaming pile of crap.

Scary as Hell
2 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This film has the balls to just scare the living shtt out of you. The scene in the parking garage is one of the best and scariest horror scenes ever. And let me just say that I'm a bit of a Horror genre nerd and purist. I have no idea where the one- and two-star reviews came from. Probably from Satanists who don't want to admit that this kind of balls-out evil really does exist.

Yeah, the plot has some corniness, with the cliché about the competition for the assistant manager's job at the bank. And the directing had a few flaws (In particular, the scene in which the scary old woman appears in her bed and pukes bugs on her face. The cut back to her and her BF in bed is much too sudden and that follow-up scene is too short).

All in all, this is horror film every bit worth your desire to have the bejesus scared out of you.

Misses on Almost Every Cylinder
22 January 2011
The short review is as follows: This is a bad movie. It starts with the script. It is beyond awful. Not only is the writing stale, lifeless and unoriginal (except for that one line, the only decent one in the entire movie "If you stop telling lies about me, I;ll stop telling the truth about you."), but, frequently, the actors mumble these lines, so it is difficult to even know what the hell they are saying.

One of the things I look for in all movies when I'm trying to determine whether it's any good is the quality of acting from the minor characters (e.g. college buddy of a lead actor, co-worker of a lead actor). Well, they stink.

I like Carey Mulligan, but I don't like her in this movie. She plays her character throughout with so much sadness and lack of humor that, after a while, you start to cringe whenever she's coming up in a scene. Shia LaBeouf does a harmless job with his character. Michael Douglas struggles (as does the film) to find some kind of spark or energy or any reason at all to keep on watching.

Do yourself a favor and pass on this stinker.

A Mind-Blowing, Soul-Expanding Trip Through the Known and Unknown
27 May 2009
My wife and I watched this astounding documentary last night. We both sat there with our mouths literally agape as this astonishing film pulled us into a journey from earth, through our solar system, our Galaxy, galaxies beyond our own, and all the way back to the beginning of time. As another reviewer commented, the tone is not from the point of view of "I'm a brilliant scientist and I know a lot more than you." You are guided along instead as if you were a tourist on a tour bus through the heavens. Before the film was over, I had achieved an epiphany. This to me was more than a film...it changed my life. It is beautiful, poetical, and it will shock you with its unadorned majesty.
