Maestro (2023)
Terrible (IMHO) - painfully overacted, unrealistic and uninvolving
I wanted this film to he terrific. Cooper runs hot and cold for me - sometimes excellent, sometimes meh. Here here's trying to act the part and it comes across phony. Even the script was awful. Maybe it would have been impossible for any actors to exceed the mediocrity of the script. I'm dumbfounded by the folks who say Cooper might nab the best actor Oscar over Murphy. Not even in the same stratosphere. Also, the use of black and white for the film seemed annoyingly for the purpose of only showing off cinematography prowess - not for the movie/story itself. I thought the fake nose was probably for Cooper to help stay in character. But I felt that and the voice affectation just hurt the performance and took me out of the movie. Absolute strikeout in my view. Next batter.
The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart (2023)
Ugh. Wonderful start, then utter collapse
This show has been so frustrating.
I jumped in and really enjoyed the start. I mean, the first 3 eps were A+. Intriguing, unusual, great performances, tight scripting. Young Alice was astonishing. She reminded me of the Judith character and young actress from ThevWalking Dead series. The next 3 eps, however, were dreadful. Warranting an F grade. Characters betrayed by story, maudlin, repetitive loops in each ep, story stagnated, didn't move forward, became typical and uninteresting. So, great takeoff, then a crash landing. So disappointing. I'm not even looking forward to the ending. Still, must give credit to an unusual Sigourney role and she was great. I saw this right after binging Black Snow, an incredible and triumphant Australian series with a similar feel but with a very different story and fantastic execution. Just my humble opinion.
Jurassic World (2015)
Just Plain Terrible - Please Pay A lot to See Garbage
Ugh! Awful movie. One of the worst scripts ever, atrocious direction, overly stupid, cliché-ridden, ridiculous over and under acting, even the dinosaur design was meh (my son, who loves the original, was amazed that the raptors in the movie looked lame even compared to the original, which was made more than TWENTY YEARS AGO). Only actors to save face were Pratt and D'Onofrio. Pratt's part was so underwritten it could have been played by pretty much any actor (at least he seems like a decent person in real life). The part called for being stoic. That's it. Not even any Bruce Willis- type "Die Hard" lines. Terrible, terrible dialogue - embarrassingly so. Bryce Dallas Howard's part was so poorly written and clichéd (the writer seemed to be pretty misogynistic in light of how every woman in the movie was portrayed) and she obviously was directed to ham it WAY up. I wouldn't be surprised if this killed her career (I hope not, she's done terrific work in so many other films - but, in this one, she truly was awful). Spielberg should be ashamed at producing or having any involvement with this garbage - as bad if not worse than any piece of trash I have seen from Michael Bay. This clearly was just a big scheme to steal $$$ from the movie-going public with no interest in the work. I hope the writer and director never make another film again. What a ripoff and disappointment.
