The Killing: Orpheus Descending (2011)
Keneman was an acting Find.
Since 2011, Kenneman has gotten plenty of work. He was the Star of this film despite (IMHO) the dreadful Enos and others. Rosie's grief stricken father was exceptional all through series.
But the two guys who were so good couldn't make this series worth the effort.
Particularly The writer/producers have No ear nor eye for street kids behavior or speech. Dreadfully bad here..
Gone Baby Gone (2007)
It didn't make me cry until the second time through.
My favorite film of the past year. Awesome story. Even though I loved "No Country.." and thought " There..Blood" (which will win the Oscar) was good. The short opening voice-over tells so much of the story...as we find out. Several of the quiet moments are the throat grabbers in this film. I know a social worker who despairs over the plight of urban youth today. I agree, but in his heart he is sure that if the 'government' would just take over and give out needs and love (?).. things would be OK, fixed and solved. NAH.(he'd say 'be better' because it's vague).
This movie is so authentic. For me only God has "solutions". In this world it's more about opportunities and choices. In this country, some of us have many opportunities (some still flame out), others get very few. After thinking about the movie end, both the choices would have been wrong...and right. The chooser just gets to live with the consequences. Sometimes it's like that.
Babes in Toyland (1934)
Every Christmas I waited & waited for it on TV.
"100 six foot toy soldiers or 600 one foot toy soldiers?".......
"It's neither pig nor pork, it's beef"
Every little kid needs this video. It's a fundamental of child rearing. How can you go wrong with Laurel and Hardy fumbling and bumbling before saving the day? Will anyone still love Quentin Tarantino eighty years from now? Two essential holiday movies. Get this one at Christmas (& 'Miracle on 34thSt.') plus 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' at Halloween. Anyone know were the boys were in their careers when this one was made? Certainly they were in Hollywood. The boogiemen "have "GREAT BIG EYES" and "GREAT BIG TEETH" and....Hey !!!"
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Reminds us that Hollywood was once wonderful...
..and uplifting. There was a time when this is why people went to the movies. No pretentious advocacy. Just high caliber entertainment. (Good music too) What? Johnny Depp can even take his young kids to see it. Pirate Jack Sparrow is an all-time characterization. Geoffrey Rush boosts the wonder of storybook pirates to a level not seen since the original "Treasure Island". The Brit officers are great foils for Depp and the pirate crew is all that one could hope for. Great lines sprinkled throughout. Rush's response to the Lady's demand on pirate ethics is classic. "..it was more of a guideline than a rule". The old adage -always leave them laughing- was transgressed for me as the film went a tad long. This movie will be watched 20 years from now...long after "American Beauty" or "Syriana" are utterly forgotten.
The Constant Gardener (2005)
Whatever happened to John LeCarre?
Mr. LeCarre's cold war books were amazing. But since the end of the Cold War, the Soviet Bloc is not the only thing that failed. If this film has any similarity to his book...both are a waste of time. I recommend a Jim Carrey movie...or Eminem. The premise here, the relationship, the wife's plan are all cardboard. Then there is the stumbling pace of the film. Okay, I tried to suspend reality. The very pregnant wife is shown lovingly in several scenes, then in hospital her child is stillborn...and the characters barely mention it! They're busy talking about clues to the international mystery. COME ON. "Hotel Rwanda" is 50 times better if you want an Africa tale.
