Knives Out (2019)
My Scorecard (5.8)
A classic crime novel movie made in contemporary times.
What shines the most in this film is the plot, and not only regarding the story in itself, but also the particular way in which it was put on screen.
The movie presented itself with every clichè possible for his own genre, and yet it felt original, as if it wasn't the usual film for a family night.
At just twenty minutes from the beginning of the film we are already told who killed the poor eightyfive years old writer, but still attention wasn't lost while I was watching the plot unfold.
The movie was pretty average, great plot though, bad acting and too many plot-convenient things. Felt unrealistic.

Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

Stories can be told in infinite ways. What makes a movie a good movie? What is more important between the tale or the telling?
The answer is: both. When an epic story meets a genious storyteller, well, then a new masterpiece is born, and Mel gibson just gave birth to a stunning war epic.
Masterful photography, beautiful transitions, perfect pacing, original idea, original story, a true story.
Everything in the movie is conceived to understand Desmond's reasons, a feat that we won't find difficult. He is a strong willed, faith driven man who doesn't want to resort to violence to do what he thinks is right.
Minor flaw: the movie was, maybe, a bit too mushy in the opening act. I have to say, though, that those scenes were necessary to outline the character of Desmond Doss, a person whose sentimental facet is a big part in his entire personality.
One of the best adaptations of true events I've ever seen on screen.

El laberinto del fauno (2006)
My Scorecard (5.1)
Visually marvellous, yet very weak movie about the atrocities committed by a evil leader and the delusions of a little girl that didn't want to stop believing in santa.
The movie was totally pointless, weak plot, even weaker meaning and the weakest fantasy setting of all the genre. Thinking that putting crude violence together with a children's fantasy movie, although achieving great feats for the entire cinema industry while doing so, is a really bad idea and the result was worse, a lot worse than what i expected this to be.
It wasn't a real thriller because characters lacked real depht, it wasn't a fantasy movie because it lacked a background to support that fictional world, it wasn't a horror movie because it lacked the scary parts, only some suspence here and there. This movie doesn't follow all the rules that come with the genres listed above (and it's not necessarily a bad thing) but, instead of being original and telling some morals, at least a the end, the film did not give me anything to reflect upon, just wondering on how obnoxious can a person be while war knocks on his door.
It has to be said that costume design (and design in general) is always top notch when you see the name Guillermo Del Toro written on the cover of the film, but all this iconic, almost cult, scenery couldn't entirely cover the plot holes, the weak story and all the other flaws i mentioned before.
El Laberinto Del Fauno is a pretentious work, too focused on being art itself, before even being a movie, to be really enjoyed by those who doesn't work in, or live for, art.
I didn't really like anything about this movie.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
My Scorecard (8.4)
What a beautiful love story was told and what incredible healing powers does love have. Heartwarming story that is impossible to miss out, especially if you watch it with your loved ones.
I loved the movie, it was so sweet I couldn't think of anything else other than that love story. The constant reminding of inadequacy, then betrayal, anger, revenge, a break-up, rehab, purpose and then a methamorphosis. That's all the movie in a nutshell, simple but effective, feelings that hit you directly in your chest, wonderfully delivered by the excellent cast.
I would like to compliment Jennifer Lawrence for how well she portrayed the feelings of Tiffany: the jealousy, the pain of being constantly judged, the feeling of being labelled for life, but also the ability to take care of someone, the empathy, the will to aid her fellow friend. Bradley Cooper, who is one of my favorite actors, never disappoints, especially when he plays happy ending scenes. But the real surprise was Robert De Niro, that magnificly portrayed a complex father figure with a lot of bad habits and problems but, also, a man with a big heart that loved his children.
I smiled almost all the time I was watching the movie. I loved it. Sweet.

Jackass Forever (2022)
My Scorecard (5.3)
Jackass and his franchise is something I don't want it to end, but dear Jhonny and Steve-O I'll have to admit it:
it's either you all that became too old (and the new fellas aren't minimally charismatic as you were) or me that grew too old to like this kind of stuff anymore.
The movie is a compilation of stunts and other pranks, some behind the sceenes and dialogues between the various fearless feats. Unluckily enough tough, the freshest things that I saw throgh this compilation were the very few "pranks" to unknowing people and - I'll be quite frank - they were the only scenes that made me laugh. It was sad to aknowledge that the initial clip with Chris Pontius was just a "ah-ah it's not a dinosaur, it's a peepee" clip. That stuff was banal, it made me cringe a little bit too much, especially when the dinosaur spurted white liquid.
Other stunts were ok but never funny enough to make me forget that the poor old stuntmen could die from a bad fall.
In conclusion, Jackass Forever is not a bad movie, it has a specific age range target that will love it, but unfortunately for me, I am no longer in that teeny niche who will laugh out loud at it, not anymore.

Nightmare Alley (2021)
My Scorecard (8.7)
Will you surrender to the temptations of Enoch or will you fight your evil impulses to not become your own unique beast man?
This movie is a marvellous, visual masterpiece, starting from the gloomy color palette, continuing with masterful photography, excellent camera angles and ending with on point noir-esque black transitions to close out the different acts. Nothing in this movie felt out of place, neither the beast-man, or the grotesque sceneries inside that carnival.
Guillermo Del Toro have made another cult movie, with fiabesque undertones, similar to his previous works and every other noir movies, but unique among them all.
Was it the journey of a bad person or a good guy's one? Did he intend to kill, or was it really an accident? What was the real relationship between him and his father? But most importantly, were some scenes mere allucinations, coming from a mind that was remembering? Or did they contribute to the developing of the character Stanton Carlisle, implying the reasons for his final evolution?
To this questions we haven't got an answer, but one thing remains certain:
he, who walks the paths of evil and goes down the steps of hell, will get captured by his own spiral of deceiving and what he'll find at the end of his journey will be only suffering and despair.

The Northman (2022)
My Scorecard (4.2)
Is it a horror, is it a thriller, or is it just a mishmash of things the producer thought audiences would enjoy?
The movie begins with the typical beginning for any viking story: a death, a woman to save, a revenge to obtain. Pretty mediocre, CGI was really bad too. Even just in the starting scene you can sense that something is off: CGI boats floating on a fake sea that feels computerized, real crows filmed on a green screen and clearly added artificially on a software-made landscape, it just doesn't make sense.
But let's return to plot.
To make the ancient tale feel less trite and clichéd, they added some esoteric viking rites here and there, with the goal to persuade the watcher they were adding depht to the film.
The result was suspect. Even though visually stunning, they displayed the old vikings customs and traditions too grotesquely to be percepied as historically real. I felt made fun on while watching these pretentious scenes.
Let's talk about the direction then. The shooting of the movie was really similar to a "The VVitch"-stile horror film. Music, in the same way, wasn't really fitting the Action-Thriller category, being inharmonious and too much fright focused. It just was either a bad Thriller movie score or a mediocre Horror movie one.
In short, The Northman is like a bad mix between any modern horror (Midsommar, The VVitch, ecc.) and a weak thriller, with too much ambitions and very little substance.
"Assassin's Creed: Valhalla" did a better job in depicting the same story, with the only difference being that the latter product is a videogame and not a movie. Shame.

I, Tonya (2017)
My Scorecard (6.6)
"I,Tonya" just tells a story from different points of view and, in each one of them, objective truth doesn't exist nor anyone can be trusted.
I won't talk about the plot, because it's pretty much straight-forward, I only want to highlight the performances of Margot Robbie, Allison Janney and Paul Walter Hauser, who did a ridiculously good job.
But let's talk about the direction choices, and how Craig Gillespie developed the subject of the movie.
Before all, I have to admit that, even though i didn't like the initial fake documentary interviews, the movie flowed quite effortlessly, thanks to the actors that put on their shoulders the entire first act (and maybe the last too). To put it simply: direction wasn't the reason I kept watching the movie till the end.
The film was a little bit too pictoresque and witty in the violent scenes, making the abuses something that can be normalized and that can make you a "stronger" person.
Abusive relationship traumas and bad parenting were never addressed, and the impact that they had on Tonya Harding's psyche wasn't fully developed. It was such a wasted opportunity...
Plot was linear, not difficult to follow; changes of character's perspective on some peculiar events made the scenes caotic, almost comical, even when a slow pace was urgently needed.
In conclusion, this movie is not a bad one, it's just that it gave me no food for thought, nothing to reflect on, just a story that could be read on a internet article with some witty lines added to it. Why did I have to watch the entire movie? What plus could "I, Tonya" give to the watcher compared to the other means of information?
Watch this movie if you are a ice skating fanatic, otherwise you can just miss it without any regret.

Pig (2021)
My Scorecard (7.2)
It's not just about a simple pig and its abduction.
Loss - and coping with it - is the main course in this visual art banquet. Will you be mesmerized by the sylvan setting or left melancholic by the autumnal color palette and its musical accompaniment?
The meaning this movie will have depends only on yourself, and yourself alone; grief and sorrow are always subjective. Pig leaves you with something bittersweet that very few films are capable of, leaving you questioning if you had a "pig" and what did you do to save it. Everyone can see in that animal their last anchor before their own mental decline, their own unique way of coping with a major loss, thier last contact with the real external world.
This movie made me refelct on what runs behind everyone's lives, what were their experiences, what shaped their personality and their response to bad events. Each one of us is unique, but we all have something in common: it's life itself, and life will naturally bring her sister, death.
We were not made to last eternally, however, what we do in our lives is important, to ourselves and to others. It can have an impact on paths we don't even aknowledge, be either positive or negative, be either effective on one single second or an entire life. Everything is important on this earth, even a simple meal can be so valuable to tear down so much as the strongest and most brutal men on the planet.
Meanings and memories that we attach to simple objects or ideas can, at the same time, give purpose for an entire life or destroy card castles built to protect our own soul from grief itself.

BlacKkKlansman (2018)
My Scorecard (8.0)
Intriguing, not too philosophical, movie on racism.
Numerous are the points which can be reflected on, starting from wrong ACAB police stereotypes and finishing with Trump's missed condemnation on White power marches.
Watching this movie after what happened to the United States Capitol on the 6th January is really disturbing, it seems like Spike Lee foreshadowed those events. Lee is not a mage though because those tensions had been in the air since 2017 and could be avoided.
Racism is not completely dead, it's always there trying to peak out from some gibberish fools.
Fighting everyday to make the world a better place for everyone is a must and you have to start now.
"If not you, then who? If not now, then when?"

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
My Scorecard (8.5)
Hard Rock and witty lines, loss and love, melancholy and comedy.
Marvellous oxymoronic plot, rendered in an astonishingly visual way.
This movie has it all, it remembers me of the first Deadpool movie, it was funny, it was sad, it had "thank god it all ended well" and "there are no real bad people, just broken ones" vibes.
From CGI to acting, from goat memes to fatty Zeus, it all was a worthy homage to internet pop culture and real superheroes movies.
This is what i look for if I want to see a Marvel movie. This is what I suggest to watch when you are with a group of friends. This is why cinema is still cinema and can never be beaten by television.
Crazy good film, Super entertaining.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
My Scorecard (7.4)
Mithological creatures, fiabesque scenery and iconic music meets classic british fashion.
I remained happily surprised by this movie; I didn't expect to enjoy it so much.
Very little flaws (that are not real flaws - but instead personal likings) combined with a not so dull plot, mixed with Dumbledore's story make this movie a worth watch for any harry potter fan.
Acting was on point, both villains and "the good guys" were well characterized, and music too was fitting this nostalgic tale really well.
CGI was awesome and the magic battles were beautifully put on screen. Fights lasted just the right amount of time and they didn't deprive the scenes of their emotional part.
Everything was never excessive but, instead, really balanced, a thing that is not so common for nowadays movies whose targets are teenagers.
Before concluding the review, I want to say something about the Dumbledore retcon, which made him become gay.
I've read all the books since the very first editions, even watched all the movies, and still I didn't find A SINGLE hint about Dumbledore's feelings towards Grindelwald. On the contrary, I can actually quote some parts of the books that may suggest the exact opposite regarding his younger years.
I still found the movie enjoyable, even after this stretch.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
My Scorecard (6.5)
Doctor strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a well made film, nothing to say about it, but, as all Marvel movies, is produced for a young audience and this brings problems. Plot problems.
The first of the many problems in the plot is that the "bad guys" are almost always unreasonable and too straightforward in them being "bad".
Antagonist Scarlet witch, as a character, feels super stupid and blindfolded, so stubborn in fullfilling her twisted dream that didn't see herself changing into a monster despite it being easily foreseeable by her. A mother is always a mother, even in front of other mothers' children, SO, even understanding her sorrow and the corruption caused by the Darkhold, I still find her impossible to empathize with.
Another problem arose when Wanda killed the strongest people in all the freaking Illuminati universe in just 5 minutes, without even flinching and going at them all together. Power levels are literally nonexistent. At this point she is just Thanos level strong, and that's simply unacceptable.
Even if she could fly, she chose to chase Strange and America by feet while one of her legs was broken, and she still managed to keep their pace.
Utterly outragious plot choices.
Other than that, CGI was on point, the special effects were pretty good, camera angles and transitions fit well in the movie theme.
I'm sorry but this time story was lacking REAL depht.

Bullet Train (2022)
My Scorecard (8)
Funny, strange, eclectic, exhilarating, exaggerated, unrealistic, superstitious.
Bullet train is all this and more.
Unique characters fight on a train full of strange people, from way too polite waitresses that can't see a violent rumble right under their noses, to huge anime mascottes that block paths and hide secrets. Everything in this movie seems real but, at the same time, it's too grotesque to be true.
Every charachter has a backstory, which is shown with flashbacks just when you need it to be known, and are the embodiment of almost every criminal stereotype ever shown on film (they just missed the italian mafia). I really liked how David Leitch portraied their own special desires and reasons to do what they do on that train, they even made me feel for Tangerine and his super strange obsession with Thomas the Tank Engine (he was my favourite).
I don't have much to say on this movie; it might have been entertaining, even strange but, above all, surely worth the watch.
Nice movie.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
My Scorecard (5.4)
The movie was too much predictable, a tale which we all knew the ending.
Too much time was wasted on useless scenes, just to make the audience more empathic towards the death of Chadwick Boseman. It felt like the pace was just too slow, ramping up only in the "war" scenes. One thing I personally liked was the presentation of this new civilization, the Talokanils. I enjoyed the mix between Mayans mythology and the tales of Atlantis: all the names and places of Talokan are clear references to both. I even liked the design of Namor, which is a clear reference to the greek god Mercury.
Super bland was the internal conflict inside Shiri, which saw Killmonger instead of his brother. Too much left untold. They should have focused more on scenes like theese instead of forcing fake sorrow on the watcher.
All in all it's not a bad film, the problem is that it wasn't made for audience the same age as me

La stranezza (2022)
My Scorecard (7.8)
I'll start the review saying that I'm Sicilian, and by telling you this I'm implying that i understood all the dialogues without the aid of the subtitles. This fact helped me enjoy the movie way more than any other italian watcher because dialogues are really fast and easy to miss if you just follow the subtitles.
Even with this little flaw, Roberto Andò and his staff did a great job in portraying the never written Luigi Pirandello's tragicomedy. In my eyes, the ambitious work was well displayed, with a good pace, beginning with a usual incipit and becoming more and more twisted with time, making you question if what you saw was actually reality or the story ideated by Luigi Pirandello's allucinated mind. In some way, the movie, was like a remake of "6 personaggi in cerca d'autore", a work which was acclaimed and heavily criticized at the same time, just as this movie. One recurrent theme was the "comedy inside the comedy" concept, the grotesque overcharacterization of the protagonists (both of this movie and "6 personaggi in cerca d'autore") and the subtle realism seeming fiabesque, almost "unreal".
Ficarra and Picone (partnered with Servillo) gave us one of the best, if not THE BEST, performance I've ever seen from them. They were simply THE FILM. Tony as usual did a great job, but I'm still flabbergasted by the comic duo.
What makes the film worth the watch, though, is the finale, in which all the movie takes on meaning.
The final psycological cliff-hanger in wich you question the entire film, and leaves you with a Nolan's "Inception" bittersweet taste in your mouth was a nice ending.
Was the first part real? Or was it all the fruit of Luigi's mental breakdown?

SCORECARD
In a range from 1 to 5, i'll give a value to each entry written below. The final mark will be the weighted sum of each fraction:
Subject (2.5) = 3/5 Development of the Subject (1.5) = 1/5 Direction/Screenplay (2) = 4/5 Attention (1) = 1/5 Recitation (1.5) = 4/5 Musical Score (0.5) = 2/5
Final Mark: (2.5 x 5/5) + (1.5 x 5/5) + (2 x 3/5) + (1 x 4/5) + (1.5 x 5/5) + (0.5 x 3/5) = 7.8
I give 8 cos i liked the film.
Les Misérables (2012)
My Scorecard (5)
I'll be quite frank, I didn't expect this to be a musical when i started watching it. I don't like musicals, so, when they began singing i tried my best to remain objective and watch the movie untill the very end, but i couldn't. The scenery was well done and all, recitation was on point, but i couldn't help myself to like how the film flowed. Too much singing moments, not so catchy songs, and the thought "if I wanted to see play, i would have gone to a theatre" made me hate the film.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
My Scorecard (7.7)
The movie was pretty average but it featured the presence of so many past heroes and villains. Disney knows how to do fan service but, as their previous works on the Marvel franchise, there are little plot holes scattered inside the story, some incinsistencies or logical failures that i expected in a film made for grown teenagers.
Flaws:
The thing that a spell could erase the memory of peter parker even in machines is a bit stupid. Like, if i have some video on my hard disk that shows spiderman taking off his mask, i still would associate the spiderman character with the face of that boy.
It wasn't explained why tom holland hasn't got the nanomachines spiderman suit at end of the film, and it seemed like he literally sewn a new one made of cloth inside his new apartment for no reason at all.
The thing that Venom didn't completely return to another dimension is a bit of a stretch put there only to be able to continue the venom movies.
Overall this was one of the best films of the MCU, comparable to 'Infinity War' or 'Endgame', and from CGI to stage presence, it had them all.

The Last Duel (2021)
My Scorecard (7.4)
I found interesting the choice to subdivide the film in 3 parts, each of which represented one truth and changed some particulars of the story. Noteworthy was the subtitle of the last Chapter "Marguerite de Carrouges's truth", that highlighted that the latter was about the real truth, the truth of the victim.
We often forget that the victim always needs to be listened and trusted, at least for the initial part that follows the accusations. Jumping to too early conclusions is something that shouldn't be done, either if you want to defend the victim, or want to doubt him/her.
Truth is always subjective, but judging can be subjective too. And this should never be this way.
The happy ending, fortunately, made the whole film more bearable and the final duel gave the spectator someone to cheer for. Either way, the winner of this duel wasn't the better man, but instead the least despicable of the two.
Maybe some scenes could have been cut out to make the film more fluent and shorter; 2 hours and a half was a bit excessive if you repeat the same scenes over and over. However, nice film.

Gosford Park (2001)
My Scorecard (7.8)
I really liked the photography and the setting of this film, that snob and refined glimmer echoed inside every scene of the movie.
What captured me was the characterization of every person portraied, really weel-made.
It has the charm of a vintage detective story, and yet it's not all about the hero detective himself, but centers all the narrative around the fictional characters.
The only flaw i can point out is that the development of some characters was a little too superficial and not completely explicated. Too much meat on the fire usually means that some steaks come out raw.
Either way, this was a good film.

Hotaru no haka (1988)
My scorecard (9.0 + Bonus 0.6)
This movie light up the truth behind every war, good or bad that it is. Everytime there is a winner, there are also countless loosers, and these ones, who loose, loose everything.
I won't say this film changed my view on the subject, because i already had a negative opinion about war, but what it did was making me empathize with that kid, him, who didn't deserve all that hell, it made me remember how lucky i am sitting on a chair watching a movie while others on the planet still suffer everyday.
The grief, the sorrow, but also the sweetness this film brings is something you can't reproduce easily, its melancholy leitmotif hit me hard, real hard.
A marvellous, awful picture of war, saw by the eyes of a too young adult. Loved it.

The Green Knight (2021)
My scorecard (6.2 + bonus)
This was one of that movies that entertains, but does this in a really strange way, too unique to appeal at first watch but too well-made to not see it another time to judge it objectively.
Through the viewing i changed opinion on the film at least 4 times: I doubted it, got bored, wanted to skip some parts, then i thought it was acceptable, in the end I loved it.
It builds up too slowly and sometimes seems like an horror movie even though it wasn't supposed to be that, but that's the director's choice.
What actually astonished me was the ending, portraied in a way that i didn't expect. It's difficult to surprise me with direction chioces, but this film did a good job.
Didn't like the CGI on the fox, music was absent untill the end, and long pauses made me want to skip some parts. These are the reasons for my scorecard marks.

Still Alice (2014)
My scorecard (9.0)
If this illness could be a film, Still Alice, for sure, would be a suitable option.
For one who had a relative with Alzheimer disease, i can affirm Julianne Moore did a ridicolously perfect job in depicting all the facets of this illness.
Musical Soundtrack was really on point.
Great film.

12 Angry Men (1957)
My scorecard (8.6 + Bonus)
Firstly you have to address the year this film was made, 1957. After that, you have to recognise how contemporary and current the themes debated in the film are.
It has it all: Racism, Anger, Prejudice, Calm, Rationality and many more.
And for sure has Purpose. Nice film.

Blue Jasmine (2013)
My Scorecard (5.5)
Actually, the film was not bad.
The only problem with films like these (*cough* *cough* Nomadland *cough*) is that they try to show you an unpleasant part of our society but they don't do it like a documentary would do. Topics like these need proper examination and deep reflections, not something a fictional story with some quirky lines can provide.
IMO, the thing this film lacked was purpose, and purpose is a big reason i watch a film. Films, for me, either have to give me something, or simply just entertain me, otherwise they are pretty useless.
This film didn't fully entertain me or leave me with something.
