Wow! Totally surprised that this slipped by my radar
22 July 2005
After repeated watchings my rating may go up. I love the movie THE THIN RED LINE and this movie reminded me of it strongly except it did not have the excellent cinematography that film did.

I watched it because I like Robert Carlyle a lot and was not disappointed by his performance or any other of the actors on both sides of the war. The pacing was perfect and the violence was very brutal and sometimes unexpected but effective.

The message it delivered to me made the movie for me. Loving thy enemy. Just realizing that we are all just humans caught up in something we didn't start. I highly recommend this movie if you like a film made with compassion.

A very funny film with some great performances
15 July 2005
I usually like to catch matinées but even nowadays its filled with weirdos. I went this morning to see Wedding Crashers and there is this guy in there - he must of been mentally challenged - at least i hope so - the WHOLE film he was HOWLING and then GRUNTING and then telling people to SHHH! when they laughed - I can't win!

Despite the distractions (and fear of being stabbed in the back by some Psycho) I was able to enjoy most of the movie. It's feel was like Meet The Fockers except way more raunchier and didn't involve animals biting people's private parts - thank goodness.

The whole cast was good and delivered some funny scenes that I hadn't expected. Overall - it is definitely a movie I would recommend seeing if you want some good laughs that aren't overdone or rehashed.

A Good British Gangster Flick
31 May 2005
And yes that is a GENRE whether you like it or not. My favorite is Sexy Beast but I put this near that very good film not equal or above.

I saw it yesterday. Great film - still haven't finished the book but wish that some narrative was included but nevertheless I enjoyed myself. Great performances and a good deliverance of a non-linear story. Definitely was caught off guard a few times in a good way.

Now that he is doing X-Men 3 I have some higher hopes for that franchise. I always have a hard time Colm Meany not portraying his Star Trek: O'Brien. I definitely recommend this for people who are fans of the gengre when it is done well.

Wes Craven is a master of Thrillers not Horror
18 May 2005
Warning: Spoilers
CONTAINS POSSIBLE SPOILERS I remember seeing this movie when I was a teenager and back then there were loads of horror movies I watched so this got lumped in with the rest with my young mind. I rented this today as I am on a Wes Craven kick having watched Hills Have Eyes this past weekend.

This film is disturbing and it looks like Rob Zombie's DEVILS REJECTS will be in the same tradition as this film was back in the 70's. I love the grittiness of the film and also the soundtrack.

NOW SOME SPOILERS Things that bothered me while I watched it again is that one of the girls had a chance to escape but instead wasted her time talking to Junior.

Also the mother giving one of the sickos fellatio made absolutely no sense. Why would she do that? I was expecting her to rip it off with the zipper but she actually went down on him - now that is just stupid.

Overall this movie is good for what it was in this time period. Most disturbing movie I have ever seen? No. Check out THE UNTOLD STORY to see some sick flick - if you are into that. I stomached it once - that was it.
