Interview (1971)
9/10
What an innovative way of filmmaking.
22 May 2022
The film tells the story of a young middle class man who is struggling to make it better. He is working at a press and trying to get a better job of an interview which is the main subject of the film. The story unveils as he tries to manage a suit for the interview and gets in all types of trouble.

The film deals with subjects like colonial hangover and unemployment. It shows how a middle class man who is trying his best to make better of his life falls under this faulty and unjust system and ultimately joins the forces of revolution which was regarded by him as disturbance in the first place.

The making of this film is way ahead of its time, may it be the way of story telling, the sequence or the way it is edited. The use of metacinema elements gives an extra push to the impact a viewer gets. The way it is edited is exceptional, the sudden abrupt cuts in the scenes and then playing it again in some other part gives a jerky yet strong effect that adds to the narrative. Some scenes are so well edited that I really wonder how they managed to do that in those time, keeping in mind that everything was analog back then. Music adds an extra flavour to each scenes, strong edgy music are used which fits the topic the film is dealing with. I personally loved the last scene which sums and ultimately gives the conclusion of the film.

One dialogue in the film perfectly defines the film: " You call this as cinema? This is my story, this is your story "

"A film about changing films"
21 May 2022
"A film about changing films"- describes the film perfectly, it shows how an ordinary filmophile can make a film different from all the conventions and change the vision towards film forever. The film is not only about how Ray made a masterpiece but also about himself.

The film deals intelegently with all the topics with many subtle comedic dialogues which is not forced upon. It is not an event by event documentary but a storyline that portrays the journey very swiftly and beautifully. It will give you a nostalgic feel with added back stories. Many untold story is shown, some of which is very shocking and interesting. Cinematography is as usual very lively, the type we see in Anik Dutta. Casting is the main USP of this film, almost every character fits perfectly, the makover department has done a very good job. Music is also very subtle yet powerful and well placed in the scenes.

Now coming to acting, Jeetu is just outstanding and mind-blowing, his resemblances is just spot on, but that is not all, his acting, expressions, body language and posture us just uncanny. The person who did the voice reconstruction for the role is something that will be recorded in history. Coming to negative points, there are some side scenes mainly the public scenes are a little bit loose, although it is common in most of Bengali movies.

Anyway this movie is worth watching in every way.

The Final Act: The best thriller I've seen in Bengali language!
26 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Mr Sudhangshu Gupta is a respected officer in his late 30s. He is widowed a few years back after his wife attempts a suicide. He has moved on and is going to marry for the second time with a woman she met on a trip, Miss Soma. On a parallel frame the movie unveils a man, who has minutely worked out a plan to showcase that Gupta's wife is still alive and had come back searching for him. He has set people all around Mr Gupta, he even managed to set Gupta's personal servant to his side and thus acquires access to his private belongings. When everything is planned ingeniously, on the day of Gupta's second marriage, Karanjakkho Samadder the mastermind of this whole conspiracy sends a woman(dressed as Gupta's undead wife) to their ceremony. A scene is created and the marriage comes ar a halt. In the following days the matter goes into court, the accusing party(undead wife of Mr Gupta) holds a number of proofs, while the defending party nullifies them. A paradox of evidence is created and slowly the accusing party finds a better of them to a certain point where it will be so promising to the viewers (of the movie) that one can believe the accusing party to be true, although the parallel sequence of the movie will not let you be sure. As the case goes on being more and more complicating and confusing the movie will reach its climax, at this point out of nowhere a twist comes that will rewrite the character build up of the protagonist and with that everything will fall in place and the cloud of confusion will slowly unveil.

In summarisation the storyline is extremely well done and every details are kept in mind. This is a well established and executed thriller, although the storyline isn't a continuous rising one, but more of a slow pace continued with a sudden climax that reveals the twist. As per acting goes, there's no doubt its executed perfectly, although I'll say some characters are framed more in a comical way keeping in mind its commercial side. Talking of commercial side, it will be better to say this movie is one such, camera angles, scene progression are very evidently commercial. I suggest every thriller lover to watch this movie, it's made in the early 1960s and thus it's not that much engaging and ornamental to the eyes, but if one catches on the storyline with utter interrest, I'm sure he/she will love it.

The most complex screenplay that I've witnessed!
26 July 2020
This series is mind boggling! The screenplay is so well written, you can barely find any loopholes. I didn't thought a sci fi could be this much interesting and logical. The screenplay is so complex that one will find it difficult to lay down the whole plot even after one season into the series. The way it links each character with another both on basis of relationship and time events is absolutely genius. The series is only about a small town of Germany, but it's much more complex and story moves in time rather in space. The cinematography and color grading is awesome, every scene of every episode is made beautiful yet natural to the eye. The sound compose is rather interesting one, there is a resemblances to that of HBO's Chernobyl, and that makes the viewer sit on the edge of his seat.

What I would add after watching the final season is that the I didn't liked the climax and ending of the series, I think it contradicts it's own concept. The ending is not something outstanding or out of the box, but mediocre. I would still suggest any thriller, sci fi lover to watch this series.

Parasite (2019)

The Parasitic System of Capitalism.
26 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The movie parasite has many aspects to look for. It shows a new way to perceive you everytime you see it. But maybe the most relavant aspects is of it's political perspective. The movie throwout its storyline shows a series of scenes and act that portrays modern day society. In present times it's noteworthy that the differences of classes is real, and with time the difference of class is growing more and more. Capitalism has rooted it's way into almost everything and anything. The whole movie meaningfully describes two properties of capitalism, rather specifically neoliberal capitalism, these are "Cool Capitalism" and "Cultural Hegemony".

The former is stated by Jim Mcguigan in his "The coolness of capitalism today". It describes the way the rich are unaware or rather ignorant about the actual condition of the society and that about the condition of the not so privileged. In the movie, there's a scene where Mr. Kim is driving, and in the backseat there's Mrs Park, who says yesterday's night was a pleasant one, in a parallel scene one can see the devastation on the poor. Another example is in the same scene where Mrs Park says there's a bad smell, and this increaes as the movie goes on. Mary Douglass states "There's no things as absolute dirt, it exists in the eyes of the beholder", i.e its a social sature that is used to prove someone lesser than someone else. This part shows how the rich are unaware of the cost or labour given for their privileges by people who are below them in this capitalist society. This sums up as a fact that the people benifited by this capitalist system often distance themselves from the have nots both metaphorically and physically. They don't want to smell anything that will remind them of poverty or maybe on which they are feeding.

The effects of late capitalism is the ever growing distance between the rich and the poor even in aspect of culture and lifestyle. Antonio Gramsci calls this as the Cultural Hegemony. Throwout the movie Mr. Park describes about a line that he always keeps and loves to kept by any of his employees between him and them. He describes this as "professionalism" but what this actually means is that he cuts out a division to maintain his status of supiority. Cultural hegemony which favours the rulling class, always teaches to aspire the supirior. This can be seen in present day advertisement, and how everyone wants to acquire the dominant status. The same is portrayed in the movie by the scene where the poor family gets a chance to live in the Park house and enjoys themselves as the rich.

The very end of the movie shows us a scene where Ki-woo has earned enough money to buy the rich house and afterall free his father, however this momentary happiness is dissolved as its reveiled that it was just as aspiration made by boy in a letter to his father. Furthermore in an interview Bong Joon-ho says keeping in mind the family's economic condition, it would take 564 year to buy that house. This is contrary to the idea of capitalism in America that "A little hardwork can get you anything you want to achieve", although the reality is that the rich gets richer in an illusion of social mobility. In the end part of the movie, after all the horor is gone, it is seen that the rich gets off from all the trouble, but the poor is trapped and diseased. In this society the poor are often faced with competition and struggle and are forced to fight between themselves for their living but theirs no attempt or ability to overthrow the prevailing system of domination. This is also portrayed beautifully by the scene where the two poor families fight to get a hold of the phone and thus make their stay in the house.

Thus to sum everything up, its to be said that if one looks at the movie in a normal way it is shown how the poor is feeding up on the rich, i.e the poor are the parasites to rich. But if one is intelligent enough, it can be pointed out that the rich are comparebly more parasitic to the poor. The poor are often poor because the capitalist system (companies) is unwilling to compensate fair wages for them in order to maximize their own profits.

"Capitalism has neither the capacity, nor the morality, nor the ethics to solve the problems of poverty."

Extraction (2020)

Disappointment!
13 July 2020
The whole movie, rather I'll say a series or accumulation of a couple of action sequences is a big failure. It does not pass as a good story teller at all. The whole movie has barely any story. The screenplay is not written properly, nor it's execution is good or well done. Direction in respect to story telling is not up to the mark as it lacks the layers of a cinema that would unfold as it progresses.

Coming to the point of characters, casting is very good, Indian actors like Randeep Hooda, Manoj Bajpai are really good actors, but they are being completely wasted as there's no space of character development or character progression. The whole film surrounds around Hemsworth, and I'll not say his performance is bad, but also not great.Action films of 90s have a similar pace and style.

The only thing good about this movie is its execution of action sequences and its cinematography. The scenes are shot from great angle, and it's no surprise as the Ruso brothers are very fond of them. The movie has used a rusty color grading to portray Dhaka similiar to that used in breaking bad to portray Mexico. For a industry like Hollywood it's very easy to decorate a movie with all this ornaments to make it look professional and eye catching, but at the end of the day it doesn't increases it's cinematic values.

In summarisation I'll say this is not a good movie, the outcome of it is disappointing im respect for expectations. But one can watch it for entertainment or momentary thrill.

The Family Man (2019– )
8/10
Compact thriller, realistic story portraying two sides of a world class spy's life.
12 July 2020
The main concept of the series(secret task force agent investigates or performs a mission) is very common, but what makes this one different is that it shows the agent also as a common man, having a family, daily life problems, dealing with them, etc. The series is very real. Present day hyper nationalism, scenario of communal violence, hatred, religious-phobic, religious stereotyping, mob lynching are also poryrayed well in this series. It also shows everything in detail and in a very explanatory way. The series has frequent comedy, but it suits nice as they are executed in a scenic manner and not forced comedy as we see a lot nowadays.

Manoj Bajpayee's acting is no doubt briliant, his side characters also deserves mention. The technical part is so well done, the sound effects are awesome, and what I like the best is the cinematography. It's brilliant, almost every scene is taken in a continuous shot, and my God the transitions, they are innovative and exciting at the same time, that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I will suggest everyone to watch it, if you are using your time to watch Netflix movies and series, of which most if not all are trash, make some time and watch this one if you are a lover of crime thriller.
