Professor T: Attachment Issues (2024)
Great Last Episode
What a finish to a good series. A couple of episodes were spoilt by the terrible background music which was unnecessary and obtrusive. Then we come to this episode. The story itself was very good and set the scene for the ending which I am not going to share. It also revealed the truth about what happened to Professor Tempests father. Again I am not going to reveal what happens, but this episode explains why he and his mother are as they are. Great acting all around and it sets the scene for another series, if there is one.
This episode is the best episode of this quirky, enjoyable and watchable series, don't miss it.
The Madame Blanc Mysteries: Windows (2024)
NEARLY PERFECT
A brilliant end to a great series. The storyline mainly featuring Jean and Dom was excellent, full of twists and turns, and the ending was wonderful. The only reason this wasn't a 10 was because of the inclusion of Jeremy and Judith. Why do they have to make their characters so unwatchable. The stupid and unnecessary scene with Jeremy and Judith at the doctors added nothing to the plot and should have been omitted. Their characters can be ok when they are not being completely obnoxious. However, the rest of the cast including Gloria and Patrick, are worth watching. I hope that thete us going to be another series of thus excellent drama, possibly writing out Jeremy or Judith or at least making their characters more watchable.
Sherlock: His Last Vow (2014)
A TURNING POINT
This is the point where an excellent series started to lose its way.
There were several disappointing factors here.
Firstly, the villain. Compared to Moriarty he was weak and annoying, his flicking of John, and his incident with the fire were annoying. Compare his menace to when Moriarty appears and you can see the difference.
Secondly the demise og Magnusson which was rushed and out of character fir Sherloxk.
And the unnecessary use of blasphemy by John Watson, which added nothing to the plot and detracts from the storyline.
There was so much to admire in this story, with the revelation about Mary, the death scene, and the interplay between Sherlock and Molly, a brilliant character. A missed opportunity.
Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?: In Harm's Way (1974)
EXCELLENT EPISODE
What a great episode, one of the best if not the best episode of this excellent series. The episode is a continuation of the previous episode and starts with Bob sporting a broken leg, which he did not get skiing, as he keeps telling people.
Bob is at his most annoying and Terry is absolutely brilliant as a hospital porter. James Bolam plays Terry to perfection and there is so much too laugh at loud at. Two scenes in particular stand out. The first is when Terry trying to remain incognito is pushing Bob in a wheelchair and the second is in the final scene of the episode, which is absolutely hilarious and I won't spoil it for you. Watch this episode and enjoy.
World on Fire (2019)
SEASON 2 REVIEW
We have just blitz watched series 2 of World on Fire and have been a bit disappointed.
The series is disjointed and characters from the first series have just disappeared. Douglas's disappearance is explained but Nancy has just gone as has Webster, Vernon gets a one line mention.
Others like Tom are hardly seen and Lois plays a much smaller part in this series.
Henriette gets a lot more air time as does Albert.
The series revolves around a pilot called David, the war in Libya, the events at Robinas House which includes an interesting character Sir James, and a completely unnecessary storyline set in Germany where young girls are to be honoured by being the mothers of the new Aryan race by sleeping with Elite German officers.
Harry is the central character and you wonder if he will follow what hus father did.
Overall there are some good scenes and acting, but itvwas not as gripping as the first series.
Magpie Murders (2022)
EXCELLENT CRIME SERIES
What an excellent TV series. A crime mystery full of twists and turns, and the homage ti Agatha Christie is obvious especially in the character of Atticus Punt and in the titles of his fictitious novels.
The acting was good especially the rwo leads Lesley Manville and Tim McMullan. The way the characters in real life were mirrored in the book was very clever and we really enjoyed the interaction between the 2 detectives as they solve their respective crimes. An added bonus was the lack of bad language and blasphemy, apart from one instance in the final episode which shows a good drama dies not need bad language. Well worth a watch.
Silent Witness: The Penitent - Part 2 (2023)
Poorly Written
Silent Witness is a programme that has endured for so long because of the acting, scripts and storylines.
This story was poor not only because of the involvement of the Mafia but also because of the excessive bad language and blasphemy. Jack's dialogue consisted of such much blasphemy it was unwatchable.
Unfortunately the programme started going downhill when Clarissa left. Her character was brilliant and brought a freshness to the show each week.
The programme needs to go back to its roots and be about forensic science and examining the bodies for clues instead of another detective series with Jack becoming a running around trying to solve the case on his own.
Doc Martin: Last Christmas in Portwenn (2022)
Why this episode
Doc Martin was an excellent series with a lot of twists and turns. The writing was usually excellent but I felt this episode was a bit flat.
Of the 3 annoying characters in the programme Joe Penhale came to the fore this episode, with his take on the 12 days of Christmas, thankfully Bert wasn't in it too much and Mrs Tishell finally caught the doc under the mistletoe.
The most surprising character was Louisa who when she found out that Martin had been in a crash was sufferer from hypothermia said ok get home as soon as you can, I must take James to the parade. A little bit insensitive to say the least.
The pluses were the doc himself, Ruth, excellent as always but underused, Claire Bloom as the ghost of Martin's mum but the best acting must go to Santa who was brilliantly played by Ron Cook.
Janice was too over the top. Doc's entrance into the village was brilliant, and he was allowed to show some real emotion. Unfortunately the final scene was completely unnecessary and added nothing to the plot.
An ok episode but it could and should have been better.
Count Arthur Strong: Stuck in the Middle (2015)
Best Episode of a Wonderful Show
We have just watched this marvellous episode again, and laughed even more.
The comic timing in this is superb as usual, Steve Delaney is at his absolute best and is brilliantly supported by Cavan Clerkin who plays the bent plumber Phil. Chris Ryman as Bulant expressing his increasing mistrust of Count Arthur is excellent, and the rest of the cast including Rory Kinnear with a smaller role than usual and Zahra Ahmadi contribute to their usual high standard.
The episode loosely based on Stephen King's book Misery is a mixture of humour, great one liners, slapstick comedy and a gradual build of tension is worth watching.
This is simply one of the funniest 30 minutes of comedy that we have ever watched, going back to the high point of comedy the 60's and 70's. Don't miss it.
All Creatures Great & Small: Second Time Lucky (2022)
Poor Start to Series 3
All creatures is one of the best programmes on TV. The first two series were like a breath of fresh air, with great storylines excellent casting and wonderful scenery. Most of all it was a family show that you could watch without seeing or hearing anything offence.
This episode had 3 unnecessary scenes. Firstly, Tristan fantasising about Maggie which added nothing to the script. Secondly, James blaspheming when in Church, although he corrected himself he could have used a much less offensive word like hell . Thirdly James and Helen undressing each other. It could have been less suggestively. Please don't spoil this series by adding scenes and dialogue which add nothing to the script. Hoping for better episodes in the series.
The Capture: Made in China (2022)
Good programme spoilt by excessive bad language
I enjoyed the first episode and was looking forward to seeing how it continued.
However our viewing was spoilt by the unnecessary excessive use of the "f" word.
It did not add to the programme and by the end of this episode we are not sure if we will watch the series again. When compared to Ridley and Van der Valk where the storylines were not as good. However because there was very little bad language or blasphemy, they were more watchable. It is a shame that writers need to resort to using excessive bad language or blasphemy in a programme. Two other programmes on recently which suffered from this were Sherwood and Murder in Provence, both of which were unwatchable.
