Wives (1975)
Could Have Been A Great Funny Series
Thirty-nine years have passed since this pilot aired, and I still remember watching it. "Wives" was fresh and funny and gave women a chance to really shine without having to play up to a dominating male character.
After all these years, I still remember Penny Marshall's trademark deadpan delivery and how she made me laugh and laugh and laugh. In one exchange of dialogue, another character says that she needs to "go to the toi-toi". Penny speaks up and says, "I can't believe it. You're 34 years old and you're still calling the bathroom the toi-toi."
I wish this could be issued on DVD either by itself, or as a special feature on another of Penny's movies. I would love to get reacquainted with this gem.
The Whoopi Goldberg Show (1992)
Another Missing Guest Episode
In addition to missing the interview with Princess Diana, there is another episode missing and that is the one when she had Tom Metzger on the show. I have part of this episode on VHS tape and am still amazed that these two people were able to sit down together and engage in meaningful conversation. My admiration for Whoopi skyrocketed that night. She gave Tom an open forum to explain his position on racial relations and did not belittle him or interrupt him. She is such a class act. Whoopi is respectful of others, no matter their background, and I believe that is the main thing that endears her to us so much. I will continue to support her endeavors and look forward to many more years of fantastic work from this amazing human being!
