Three of Us (2022)
The itch to feel something beautiful, something sad, something personal.
"Three of Us" is like a warm hug that makes you genuinely smile, even though it has a somewhat sad feeling. The movie feels personal because the characters take you on a stroll down memory lane. Shefali Shah is amazing as she shares the protagonist's childhood memories. Jaideep Ahlawat is just as good as the protagonist's old friend, and Swanand Kirkire does well alongside these strong performers. The music and environmental sounds make the scenes even better. It's a movie that feels emotionally immersive and leaves you wanting to experience something beautiful, something sad, and something deeply personal.
The Good Place (2016)
Picture a wave in the ocean
This is the feel good sitcom that I really needed to see. It's smart, unique and quirky but really deep as well.
It had set up a the initial narrative to be a generic feel good comedy. But I am so glad it was so much more than that. Seriously, avoid all sorts of spoilers and just have a organic experience. There are things done so well that it requires you to just get through the initial episodes.
The narrative is deep and thought provoking in such a fun way. The way moral philosophy acted as the one constant theme for the main plot was really entertaining and damn informative. It makes you really think. The moral lessons were some of my favourite bits but its that "Waves" quote from the finale that will stay with me.
Now it does have its fair share of "weakpoints". Especially with the initial episodes of 3rd and 4th season feeling a bit off in terms of quality. But it always picks up with the ever intriguing main plot. The finale is so good that it alone elevates the whole series to one extra point. The finale gives you the sense of closure that I don't often see in sitcoms done to this level. It's the perfect end for all the main characters. It will leave you thinking about it for a while.
The show knows exactly when and how to end. That's what made this one hell of a journey.
The Good Place: Whenever You're Ready (2020)
The show that knows when to leave.
This has to be my favourite end to a sitcom. Not too many episodes, a damn good narrative that knows exactly when and how to end.
TGP is the feel good show I really needed to watch. The way moral philosophy acted as the one constant theme for the main plot was really entertaining and informative at the same time. It makes you really think. The moral lessons were some of my favourite bits but its Chidi's "Waves" quote that will stay with me.
The finale gives the perfect farewell to all the main characters. They've experienced it all there's to experience. Now it's the little things that really fulfilled their experience and prepared them to know exactly when the time is right.
I mean they could've made another season of the main characters fulfilling their wishes and living happily in the good place. But the show jumped to their last days because the creators were probably ready to leave.
Better Call Saul (2015)
Genuinely deserves more credit than it gets
This show is so damn good. It is slow, slower than Breaking Bad. But boy the universe build up and character development is top notch. There's less drugs and more law.
It is so slow at first that it'll break off many people's interest. But honestly, it is worth it. And it's way more subtle than you'd expect. Pay attention and you'll love it even more.
I started BCS just months after finishing breaking bad. It is just amazing to see the little things Vince Gilligan has done that'll remind you of BB.
BCS has it's own set of characters along with the ones from BB. Both are developed and acted...well, FLAWLESSLY.
Lastly, I would like to give shout out to the amazing camera work. Just brilliantly effective. (Season 3 Episode 5 is one great example)
This show deserves much more popularity and nominations. It is one of the best shows out there. Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould...and the whole cast and crew are geniuses. Can't wait for season 5.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Fantastic horror-family drama series, with a subjective ending which has so much more to it.
The Haunting of the Hill House is one of the most well made horror I've seen in a long time. The scares feel genuine and unexpected. The main thing is that it is not just horror. The main driving part is the family drama.
I absolutely loved the slow burn to the revelations. It felt like a psychological horror for each character which makes it even more creepy. The characters are all really well written and developed.
Shout out to the direction and camera work. Seriously, they did a fantastic job.
That being said, the ending felt cheesy and melodramatic. Not bad but not what the show deserved. But I think it wasn't completely a happy ending. There are just so many hints that tell a different story.
*Here's the spoiler part*
I'm really glad the siblings survived, ESPECIALLY poor Luke. But I didn't like the idea of Hill House being presented as not really a bad place. However, I think there's more to it. The house somehow won and fooled us into believing that it was a happy ending, while it wasn't. It fooled Steve so the house stayed in tact, Hugh fell to the "trap", The Dudley's believed in Poppy's idea and were trapped in the house as well. That red cake of Luke, that kinda screams a sad ending.
I'd say let the sibling be happy, but leave it ambiguous with them not really being haunted but still there's presence of ghosts.
You have to have your own opinion on the ending, though. It's really not that bad as many say.
The Haunting of Hill House: Silence Lay Steadily (2018)
The ending felt cheesy but I think there's more for interpretation
The build up to this episode was amazing. The slow burn to the revelation of so many things was truly amazing. This episode was pretty good up until the cheesy part started.
Funny thing is that I didn't find it bad, just found it too happy. I would've preferred a mixture of happy and sad ending for the family. But I think it wasn't necessarily happy as there can be multiple interpretation.
I'm really glad the siblings survived, ESPECIALLY poor Luke. But I didn't like the idea of Hill House being presented as not really a bad place. However, the House is indeed evil and it fooled the crains and us into believing that it was a happy ending.
The Hill House stayed in tact. It fooled steve into letting it rot by leaving it untouched.
There are a few hints that suggest a not so straight ending. The red cake theory being my favorite.
The siblings however have a ambiguous ending with them being happy, but the house is still waiting for them. I read somewhere that Liv's eyes at the end say a lot.
Still, truly a great series with not a bad end but little disappointing for being cheesy. But I think it was just there to fool us. Seriously, this is a gem of a show.
(I've edited my review quite a few times after seeing so many possible theories. The rating remains the same, though)
Tamasha (2015)
Good movie but not perfect.
Tamasha is an ambitious work by Imtiaz Ali but it's not perfect. The weak point is the plot development, which kinda weak and unbalanced. But the plus point is the performance by Ranbir, Deepika, the young Ved and Ved's dad. Some scenes are kind of overacted or maybe exaggerated but there are a few that are just pitch perfect. The plot development is just a little bit cheesy, but not entirely. Ved's personality disorder is a bit exaggerated too but Ranbir Kapoor plays it almost perfectly. It was a really tough role, so some flaws are there in his performance, but it is commendable. The main plot line is good, i.e. Ved's struggle to find his real self. The film tackles the issue of being forced to do something you aren't interested in and slowly lose the real you and get sucked up in the world of boredom. I really liked the main plot of the story. The romantic part of the movie is just a phase of it but a really important one because it's not really cheesy and plays a big part in the main story. Deepika shines as the normal one in the story but it's Ranbir who steals the show by playing his character so well. From the free- spirited guy in Corsica to the robotic boring guy in the real world to the Hyde-Jekyll inside Ved, Ranbir does a great job. Although it's not his best performance but great effort in such a complicated role. People with the similar situation will relate to this and it is a great inspiration for them as well as a message to the society. The 1st half is OK, entertaining but nothing that great. It's the 2nd half where the story picks up and the cast gets to steal the show.
The soundtrack is really good and the cinematography is brilliant. The chemistry is, as usual, flawless but the performance is what makes it even stronger. The movie isn't perfect but it's nowhere near the worst ones. Watch it if you want a little complex story but sensible ones instead of the typical nonsensical Bollywood movies. Remember it's not for just entertainment, so don't expect it to be completely entertaining. If you are a fan of good story lines, then you should give it a try. Not perfect but not bad at all.
About Time (2013)
Great Film with a lot of plot holes.
The plot of the film has a unique and a genius idea. The characters are perfect and you will connect with each and every one of them. Also, The acting is great. After watching this film, I felt like how awesome it is to have the ability to travel in time. You can literally relive the moments you loved and improve the mistakes you made. Okay, the main plot is completely imaginative and fancy, but the characters and their development is realistic. Overall, a great movie. Just loved every single bit of it. Why I didn't give it a Perfect 10?? Well, it's because of the plot holes. I clearly noticed a lot of plot holes in the movie. But the movie kept me captivated and eventually the plot holes didn't bother me much. Although it did a little bit. :P The main concern of the movie isn't sci-fi, so you can ignore it and enjoy the movie or complain about it. You have to give it a try, though.
