Excellent Writing. Poor Reality.
10 April 2023
I watched all ten episodes of The Midnight Club. What kept me watching? The creative writing. Decent acting. Fantastic atmosphere. Finally, I loved the choice of music.

What I had issues with, I was a Hospice nurse for all ages, and none of my residence looked so...healthy. They were not up all hours of the night, roaming around and climbing stairs. By the time anyone enters Hospice care - it is palliative care. Even my youngest of patients never exhibited the level of energy like the movie. It made it difficult to see them as dying.

The stories within the story were well-written, but took away from the shows main objective. As for the main objective, it can be interpreted in several ways, but I'm unsure what the creators were tying to convey.

I think too many things suffered a high level of ambiguity, and left me feeling like it needed a finish line.

Divergent, Equilibrium, And Pleasentville Had A Baby

And that baby's name was The Giver.

This entire movie felt like I'd seen bit and pieces of other stories. As stated in my headline, those are the movies/books that came to mind.

I scored it a six because it was mildly entertaining. The acting was good, the setting was well-done, but it felt like the wheel was being reinvented to be another wheel.

Super Cringe

I love both of the lead actors, but it doesn't save this series from being so much cringe. I am no prude and love a good, spicey story. But this show just makes me roll my eyes and wince.

Love Hate Relationship
3 October 2021
This series has sat on my Netflix watch list since 2013, and I was mildly interested but didn't bother with it until 2021.

I truly loved parts of this series, all the while hating others. The storytelling has whiplash. Just when you think the storyline becomes interesting and going somewhere, it becomes disjointed and has a severe case of ADHD.

There are too many plot bunnies hopping around town and too many characters to follow. That isn't even the worst of it - the storytelling on certain characters drops off the face of the earth without any closure.

The show's offering of a stunning and talented treasure trove of actors would be fantastic if not for the awkward dialogue and nonsensical scenes.

The worst of the worst - the ending. It was lazy. It's as if the writers wrote themselves into a corner and had no idea how to wrangle in their insane plot bunnies to create a plausible ending that would satisfy or make sense.

This series had the potential to be unique rather than a recycled fantasy trope. Instead, it was confusing, disorganized, and frustrating.

Real
15 August 2021
I don't have too much to say other than the fact, this story and the way it's portrayed feels very real. There is no sensationalism or scandal, it's art imitating life in the best way.

I've never seen Elizabeth Olsen act before and I am in awe of the character she brought to life. I don't like repeating myself, but it came off as (real).

I'm only halfway through season one. I accidently found out about this series via the Jimmy Fallen Show. I'm so glad I did!

Predictable. A little Fluffy - Yet, Very Fun.

I don't have a long, drawn out critique. The show is fun to watch. It's refreshing, not full of angst and the characters are fantastic. It's managed some depth without over-doing it.

The Turtle Race

Warning: Spoilers
My review has since been edited after watching Season 4.

I have read every single book of this series. I believe I can remove myself from the books into movie or TV adaptations and give credit to creative license with a critical but fair eye.

Virgin River has now had four seasons. This show is worse than a soap opera. Baby mama, Charmaine Roberts, has been pregnant for three years. (eye roll)

This TV show makes a snails-pace look like the Roadrunner cartoon. Nothing moves along that is part of the primary characters. Meanwhile, on the periphery, all sorts of nonsense are happening. It's as if the world revolves around a few characters, and life goes on except for them.

The plot bunnies are incredibly predictable, and the writing is subpar. This show turns Life Time movies into masterpieces.

I told myself I was done after season three. I should never second-guess my first discission.

I've dropped my rating from 6 out of 10, to 4.

Something About Castlevania
26 October 2018
I'll be honest, the first 4 episodes, the story telling was given to us in warp speed and nearly no character background and development. It's as if the writers and animation creators expect the viewer to be all caught up and able to fill in the blanks. Yet, I kept watching.

What drew me in? Excellent voice acting and the potential I believe this series could be heading for. I personally feel Netflix wasn't even sure this would go further than the pilot season, which is likely why better attention to detail and development had been ignored.

One, Two, Fail
15 September 2018
I fell for this incredible show until I didn't. Seasons one and two were outstanding. The seamless blend of adventure, action, intrigue, romance and well placed humor amongst all of the gritty scenes kept my interest and highly anticipating the next episode.

And...that's where it ended.

Season three, in my opinion dropped the ball and fell flat into the ridiculous. The constant together and pulled apart between Jamie and Claire has grown stale and repetitive. The impossible situations that somehow work themselves out only to be propelled into the next ridiculous scenario are more and more unbelievable.

I've never read the books. I considered it but felt it may color my expectations and ruin my ability to enjoy the show.

I am going to give season four a chance in hopes they find their way back to good storytelling . If not, I'll have to say goodbye to what started off as an amazing series.

I wasted over 2 hours of my life.
18 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
For starters, I only managed to get through a portion of the first book before tossing it into a donation box. The writing was repetitive, unimaginative and reminiscent of an ammeter, teen fantasy diary rather than a novel.

Jamie Dornan: Honestly, I never knew who he was until I watched the series, The Fall, which he plays a very intense character - serial killer. I adore his character in this show. He is understated, serious, methodical, and a brilliant antagonist to Gillian Anderson's role.

Sadly, his skills as an actor are overshadowed by poor dialogue, piecemeal scenes and terrible continuity. Just like the book(s)

Dakota Johnson: Another actor I've never heard of and it is hard to tell whether she is good at her craft due to the horrible dialogue.

The two lead actors had zero chemistry between them. Because of this, their scenes together were lack luster and even the sex was boring and uninspiring.

Christian Gray is damaged goods. He is emotionally stunted due to abuse at a young age, and worse yet, molested by mommy's predictor bestie in his teen years. Alas, that may have been a better story if someone else wrote it.

The worst part about this movie? How many people rushed to the box office, dropped their hard earned money in the hands of an industry that knew this film was built on a load of tripe, though, they cashed in opening week due to the hype over tripe. Much like Twilight, you'd think movie goers would have learned their lesson.

Sex sells, yes? But that is a completely different industry. Don't waste your money on this film, or the books if you value your intelligence and brain cells. The creators knew this was a baseless cash in. Don't line their pockets for a poor product.
