An important movie for churches to see
26 February 2023
What this movie involves is definitely somewhat controversial- mainly letting hippies and drug addicts be a part of the church. Many churches frown on this; it doesn't feel right. But when you stop and think about it, it all makes sense. Afterall, Jesus never rejected anyone, and he said it's not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I don't think churches should permit them to play music for the church service without at least getting to know them first. But there are definitely countless drug addicts and people who are lost that are likely to change if more churches would welcome them. This is an important point that more churches need to consider.

The movie is quite dramatic at times. There was one point where I thought they went a little too far in showing people using drugs. One person chokes and almost dies. But it should do a good job at discouraging people from using drugs.

We were a little disappointed that the character Lonnie sort of disappears and isn't really seen again. But since it's a true story, I guess that was perhaps necessary. I think they should have shown a few more examples of the hippies/drug addicts being transformed into respectable people, but they pretty much covered the important parts.

The timing of this movie was definitely divine in that it came out in the midst of some major revivals. It is something that churches need to see.

Too hard to enjoy
3 January 2023
I was quite surprised and relatively excited when I heard about this series. It's amazing that the story could be revived after all these years. You have to hand it to Tim Allen for pulling this off. But the style, look and feel to this series is so different from the movies that it really doesn't feel like the same story. And unlike the movies, I find this to be very difficult to enjoy, mainly because of the characters. Tim Allen still has the same charming humor and style that made the story good, he has not lost his touch. But it's not enough to compensate for the way many of the other characters behave, especially Noel who is nothing but an absolute nuisance, Simon is an idiot and the elves are not very nice anymore. They've gone from happy, cheerful helpers to rude, selfish problems. All of these annoyances make the story very difficult to enjoy. I watched a few episodes but gave up.

Spectacular and very impressive, but also very sad and troubling
30 August 2021
The action and special effects in this movie are incredible, (but also quite repetitive). It's impressive that it was written and filmed nearly 30 years after the next chapter. They did a good job at connecting them and setting the stage for the story that follows. A person unfamiliar with the series would have no idea that this is a prequel (except that its special effects are far more advanced).

But what really bothers me about this movie, and the main reason why I can't give it a higher rating is because of what Anakin does. The fact that this once friendly and genius kid turns to evil and begins killing innocent people is very troubling. He even tortures and basically kills his pregnant wife and numerous others. It's wonderful when bad characters turn good. Bud having a good character turn into such an evil person is very disturbing and unpleasant. It's one thing to have robots and wicked people destroyed. But having a bunch of good people including innocent women and children killed by a formerly good character is just not right.

It's not surprising that it's rated PG 13. Surprisingly it really contains no blood or profanity. As a Christian I commend this part. And it doesn't actually promote violence. Nevertheless, what Anakin does, and the way he is portrayed near the end is so troubling that I think it probably should've been rated R. It's not the big battle at the end that's too intense (that part is outstanding), rather it's what he does, especially when he attacks his wife who was pleading with him.

It sets the stage for the next film, but there could've been a better way of doing it.

An Excellant Remake
17 August 2021
The original Aladdin was one of my favorite movies as a kid and I think it's really neat seeing it in live action form. Unlike some remakes like the Lion King, this one is fresh with plenty of new items and variations, even though it's the same basic story with most of the same major events and songs.

One of the only things that I don't particularly like is the way that the character Jafar is portrayed. He's so different from that of the first movie that he really doesn't seem like the same character, and it's considerably darker than what I would've liked. The Sultan is also quite different, but in a good sort of way (he's a lot less childlike now).

Most of the cast I really like, especially Naomi Scott. In my opinion, they couldn't have found a better person to play Princess Jasmine. I'm not sure if it's her natural personality, or if it was purely acting, but she portrays the character in a way that I find to be considerably more pleasant and likable than the one in the original movie who was sometimes a bit rude and grouchy. I can see why others would feel differently about this, but I really like it better this way.

Remaking animated movies into live action is always sort of an awkward transition that may take some getting used to. But I think they did a really good job with this one. It's a great story, and very impressive and exciting as well.

October Baby (2011)
A very unique drama
9 August 2021
This is one movie that I honesty cannot decide how many stars to give. In some ways it's a movie that I love and would like to keep watching, while in other ways I don't want to watch it at all.

The drama aspect of the film is quite special. When it comes to movies where there are no deaths or injuries, this is likely the most emotional film I've ever seen (especially among Christian films). So if you're looking for a good drama that will make you cry without seeing anyone get killed or injured, then this is a movie you will definitely want to see. Though the movie contains virtually no physical injuries, throughout the story, Hannah is constantly experiencing what you might call "emotional injuries". It's very dramatic what she goes through. The actress who played her did an outstanding job. And it does a good job at showing why abortion is so wrong. It also sort of subtly points out that the main solution to problems like what Hannah goes through is simply to forgive and move on, which can have a bigger effect than most people realize.

Interestingly, the movie also sort of "puts you into the shoes" of being a college student. It causes me to sort of reminisce my past, remembering what things were like when I was that age, and wondering how life may have been different if I had done things differently.

What exactly is this movie?
23 January 2021
Though it's considered to be a sequel to the Wizard Of Oz, it really cannot be classified as such.

It's a rather unique movie with a moderately good plot, and lots of amazing special effects that I would consider to be rather impressive for their time. It has a rather intriguing feel to it that's sort of difficult to describe.

But what exactly is it? It is not a true sequel for numerous reasons, not the least of which is that the overall style and feel is so different from the first movie that there's really no comparison. The Wizard Of Oz had a rather bright, fantasy feel to it, whereas this movie looks more realistic and has a significantly darker and more eerie feel to it. Though there's no blood, and very little violence, some of the movie is a bit scary and disturbing. Some of it is what I would almost describe as being "nightmarish" in terms of how it feels. It's certainly not a horror film, but it's more along those lines than you may expect for a movie like this. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, I actually saw this before the Wizard Of Oz, when I was quite young and liked it. My point is simply that they're totally different. And for that matter, though Dorothy looks relatively similar, virtually nothing else does, not even the costumed characters. There are also some things that don't line up, like the "Deadly Desert" which Dorothy seems to know about, even though there was nothing even remotely like this in the first movie.

So what is this movie? It's not a sequel to the Wizard Of Oz, and it's certainly not a remake. I would describe it as being a "sequel to a remake" (a remake that was never made).

Well Intended, But Painful
3 September 2020
I don't want to say anything negative about the Erwin Brothers, I have a great deal of respect for them. They in fact attended the same great Christian college as I did, and I'm very proud of them for their achievements. But personally I really wish they would stop making dramas about true stories and start doing something more fun and original like they did with Moms Night Out.

I have no doubt that their intentions for this movie were good, and it was very well made. The quality and acting was just as good as any Hollywood Film. But quite frankly, this is one Christian film that I honestly wish had not been made, not only because the story is tragic and painful, but also because it sort of makes God seem cruel, which is not a good message

Not as good as the others
26 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It was fun and exciting, but there were problems with it. One of the main problems is that there were too many characters, and most of them from the previous movies aren't seen very much, other than Woody, Buzz and Bo Peep. The movie is also too centered on woody, and I thought it was rather disappointing that the movie ended with him leaving the others to stay with Bo Peep. This was a rather sad ending and not a good way to end the series.

Very Peaceful and Happy, But a Little Too Strange and Confusing
14 July 2020
This movie has a rather beautiful and peaceful feel to it, a lot more than most movies. But it's also rather strange and a bit awkward at times, particularly when it shows scenes from a story Mandie had been told. Some of the characters are also a bit strange, and could've used some more explanations.

The movie is very notable in that it was the final role of Dean Jones. He was a wonderful Godly man who will always be missed. I would dare say that his character's kind nature, combined with the movie's peaceful feel made it a relatively fitting final role for him.

Too Unbalanced
3 January 2020
The Incredibles 1 is my favorite animated movie since the 1990s (when I was a kid), and the only one that I ever purchased. For a long time I was really looking forward to the sequel. But I was disappointed with it.

The biggest problem is that too much time is spent with Helen doing all the hero work while Bob stays home doing nothing besides trying to take care of the kids. This isn't a bad story line, but it goes on for much too long. Bob eventually gets involved, but there's not a lot of times when he gets to use his super strength. There's not a lot of times when Dash gets to use his super speed either. I also thought it was annoying how rude Violet acts. I also didn't like it that Jack Jack has a whole bunch of powers and constantly causes problems. I can see why lots of people would like this, but I liked it much better when he wasn't around. Furthermore, his numerous powers make the lead characters seem a lot less special. The presence of numerous new super heroes further adds to this.

It's not a bad movie, I did enjoy some of it, but it's just too unbalanced, I thought it felt sort of like a really long version of one of those minor sequels (like "Jack Jack Attack", "Frozen Fever" etc.). "Incredibles 1" had a lot more of a plot to it and was overall a much better movie.

The Lion King (2019)

Not very emotional and a little too predictable, but still fun
26 August 2019
It's unbelievable how realistic the animals and scenery appear, it's hard to believe that it's animated and not filmed. I remember as a kid being astonished by the animation of the original film, but that was nothing compared to this. It's a shame that the realism made it so that the animals couldn't really show any emotion. I guess "real" looking animals and emotional stories just don't mix. The makers undoubtedly could've given the animals emotional expressions if they had chosen to. But when you stop and think about it, it is "understandable" why they didn't. I'm not necessarily saying that it was the right decision, but since the animals look real (as opposed to hand drawn artwork), it probably would've looked a little weird if they had showed emotions, since most real animals do not.

The voice acting wasn't very good. I never thought there was anything special about the voices in the original film, but they were better than most of these. It also seemed a little weird that so many of the lines were pretty much identical to the original, this undoubtedly makes the new voices seem even worse for those of us who remember the way they sounded before. I really think they should've rewritten most of the lines and made more new events. The movie does have some new scenes, I liked the scene where Nala flees the land, this was a nice addition. But most of the scenes are pretty much the same as the original. It also became a bit boring at times. I think it would've been better if they had made more additions and changes, and perhaps some new songs.

I think it's really neat when animated movies are remade in live action form (or seemingly live action form in this case). But what worked in one form doesn't always work in the other.

After seeing it a few times, it becomes very special
13 May 2019
This is one of those movies that you really need to see a few times before judging. Many people have said they don't like it or were disappointed with it. When I first watched it, I thought it was a little boring. But now it seems quite special. There are a few action scenes that seem to feel sort of "empty", but overall it's a great movie. And unlike most Hollywood movies these days, it has no foul language or anything inappropriate.

This is not one of those sequels like "Return to Oz" or "Home Alone 4"- a movie that's treated as a sequel but doesn't fit the story or style of the original. "Mary Poppins Returns" is indeed a true sequel, with pretty much the same style and feel to it even though it was made by different people. It's impressive that they could make a true sequel to a movie that's over half a century old. It has numerous similarities, and a story that unfolds in a rather similar manor. I think the story is actually better than the first one, it has more of a plot to it. The first movie was basically just about family conflicts and having fun. This movie also involves a family trying to save their house from greedy bankers. I like it how the kids try to help with it. Though their efforts don't amount to much, it's nice the ways that they try to help.

Mary Poppins's behavior or personality is noticeably different, but since it takes place 25 years after the first film, it doesn't really matter. All of the actors in the film, including the kids did an excellent job. But what makes the movie so special is that Dick Van Dyke appears. His role is rather brief, but priceless. It's hard to believe that he's still acting and that he's the same person who played Bert in the first movie. I just wish that Julie Andrews had appeared also. It's a real shame that she turned it down.

Frozen (I) (2013)
7/10
Unique
3 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Every once in awhile you find something that's not your style and not the type of thing that you're normally interested in, and yet somehow you seem to like it. For me, "Frozen" is a good example of this. As a 36 year old man, I don't usually watch fairy tale type movies anymore (the only reason why I saw this is because I was a substitute counselor at a summer camp and this was one of the movies they showed the kids). There are some things about it that I don't like, particularly the stuff with the trolls. Is the movie overrated? I would say so. But overall I think it's a great film with some really unique story elements and intriguing music, particularly "Let It Go".

I think it's interesting that the blizzard and chaos is caused not by the bad character, but rather by a good character who just doesn't know how to control it.

But what really makes it unique is how Anna is saved from the cold spell at the end. (Note that there are spoilers here). She is told that in order to save herself she needs an act of true love. It looks like it's just another one of those old stories where a princess needs a kiss from a man (a concept I have never liked). But in complete contrast to traditional fairy tale stories, it turns out to be something very different, in that instead of needing true love from another person, what she really needs is to perform an act of true love to someone else (or at least that's what ends up happening). It's a very special scene in that while she is literally dying from the cold she sees Kristoff coming and thinks that he is her only chance to survive. But at the same time the wicked prince Hans is about to kill her sister. So she has to make a decision of either save herself, or try to save Elsa, and she ultimately chooses the latter. She literally gives her life to try to save her sister. Giving your life for someone else is the greatest act of love that anyone can possibly do. The fact that she even still loves her sister at all after all the trouble she has caused makes it even more commendable. In a sense this sort of makes Anna a good example to follow (although she also makes some foolish decisions as well). The only problem with this is that it's easy to misunderstand what saves her. After she turns into ice, Elsa hugs her, thinking she's dead. It's only natural that she would do this. The problem is that this gives the false impression that it was the hug from Elsa that saves her (rather than the expected kiss from a man). This was what I thought at first. Some friends of mine thought this too, and felt that this made it inappropriate. It would've been good if the snowman or somebody had explained this better.

Unlike most people, I don't like romance stories. And while Frozen does contain some romance, I like it in that for once the romance is not what solves the problem at the end, and isn't really the main focus.

Very Weird And Confusing
28 July 2016
When I was a kid I used to love building with legos. I suppose back then I might have liked this movie a bit better, but today I really think it's lousy. A movie about legos is a great idea, but much of the film is rather awkward and confusing. It's hard to keep track of what's what. For a little while I was actually having a hard time staying awake. What makes it especially weird is how it eventually starts transitioning from the fantasy animated world to the real world. I can see why some people may like this, but I find it to be basically just a weird interruption. If the movie had started out in the real world before going into the main story, it would've made a little more sense.

Depressing
28 July 2016
Though it's an interesting concept, in my opinion it didn't work very well. The idea of an old mans house traveling by balloons to where he wants to go is not a bad idea, but in my opinion, it's not a very good story.

The thing that it made it especially unpleasant to me is the fact that the main character starts out as a happy adventurous kid, but then jumps way ahead to the point where he's a weak old man who needs a cane and who has just lost his wife. This made the whole movie seem rather sad and unpleasant to me. It's also sad how things often don't go very well for him.

A Great Setup
28 July 2016
As an adult, I don't usually watch animated movies much anymore, especially todays computer animated movies which are often very crazy and hard to keep up with. But this one I actually enjoyed, it's probably the first animated movie in many years that I actually want to see again.

I really liked it how each member of the Parr family (both young and old) has a totally different super hero ability that none of the others have, and that in order to destroy the enemy they have to work together with all of their abilities being important. There were certain issues regarding their reluctance to use their abilities that I thought were a bit frustrating. But in the end it all worked out. I'm surprised that they still haven't made a sequel to this. It has great potential.

Not the greatest film on earth, but a wonderful concept
12 April 2015
This film is basically a fantasy story, which is sort of awkward for a Christian Film. Contrary to what some people may think, Christian films generally portray things that can happen in real life, and not fantasy items like a magical medallion. But the makers of this film came up with a unique solution to this problem, it's set in a real life scenario of a man visiting an orphanage and telling the kids a story that's just pretend to teach them some lessons. The majority of the film consists of this story he tells. This is a great concept that I think more Christian film makers should try, it makes it possible for a fantasy story to work as a Christian film.

The movie is sort of unbalanced in a number of ways. Some parts are very exciting, while other parts are kind of boring- at least after seeing it a few times. It's hard to say what age group it's meant for. Some parts are rather violent and scary, while other parts are more like what you'd see in a cartoon- sometimes bad guys get knocked out by just a little punch, which is sort of pathetic. Some of the fighting is pretty well done, but not all. There are also a couple times in which it almost seems like some clips are missing- at one point they're on a chase in the forest, then suddenly they're in town.

Despite a few issues, overall it's a pretty good film, and a great concept. It's neat that the character who tells the story is played by Alex Kendrick. They couldn't have found a better person on earth to play this role. This was actually what got me interested in seeing it- his movies are beyond outstanding, and it's great that he's now starting to appear in other good films.

Kirk is a great guy, but this film just isn't very good
11 February 2015
As a Christian, I love Kirk Cameron, he is a truly great guy who is serving the Lord very well. Unfortunately, though his intentions were good for this film, and it might be what GOD wanted, but I really kind of think that this time he may have made a mistake. This is the kind of film that may work for Churches to show their members, but the quality isn't very good, and it definitely doesn't work as a public film. It usually angers me a lot when people give low ratings to Christian films (particularly the new "Left Behind"). But for this movie I really can't blame people for giving it a low rating, I would too if I wasn't a fan of his.

Left Behind (I) (2014)
7/10
It deserves a higher rating, unfortunately its strategy just doesn't work
13 January 2015
I've enjoyed the film, it's been very frustrating to me how negative most people been towards it. It seems that both secular audiences and Christian audiences are usually unhappy with it. But I think I have figured out why. And the answer is actually quite simple- for most of us, if we have something against a movie (or anything else for that matter), we're generally going to hate it no matter how good it is (we focus on the negative, and ignore the positive).

There are two kinds of movies- secular films and Christian films. And sadly this movie shows that the two types just don't mix. It seems that the filmmakers decided to make an exciting, action packed, Hollywood style film with big name actors in order to attract secular audiences and show them what we Christians believe is coming- the rapture. I'm sure it worked some, but it seems that any scripture is too much for the average secular audience, no matter how exciting the movie may be. If they had portrayed the rapture as science fiction, like alien abduction, it would've had a higher rating. The movie is very exciting and well done- a fact that many people either ignore or refuse to accept because of its Christian aspect. And at the same time, many Christian audiences also dislike it because of its Hollywood style, and the fact that it only has a bare minimum of scripture.

As a Christian, I've been looking forward to this movie for many years now, longer than any other film. I'm somewhat disappointed with it, but I do still enjoy it, in fact the more I watch it, the more I enjoy it, but I do wish that it had more scripture. Even for the secular audience, I think it would've helped if they had explained the rapture a little more- they give almost no explanation of what it is and why we believe it, other than the fact that it's in the Bible.

I think some Christian audiences also dislike it because it's so different from the books. The original Left Behind movie was very similar to the book. I enjoy it, but they sort of covered too much, they tried to squeeze the entire first novel into it, which didn't exactly work all that well. Ironically, this time it's the exact opposite, only a very small part of the novel is covered, just the first few hours after the rapture. But it's interesting to note that both authors of the Left behind series did not like the original movie, but do like this one. I actually find that somewhat surprising. I'm not sure which film I like better. I do hope they make sequels, but the ratings probably won't be much different.

A really great film
1 December 2014
It's a wonderful and very entertaining story with a lot of great humor. It's quite a unique story with a lot of interesting elements. Some parts are a bit frustrating, but it all works out. Many of the scenes with the robbers are a bit disturbing and frightening, it would probably be rated PG if it was made today. But it's all part of the story. Dean Jones did a lot of great Disney films in the 60s and 70s. It's interesting that this was his first, it's just as good as the others. I think there should've been a few more scenes showing the arrests near the end, and what happens afterwards, but it shows the important parts. This is one of those films that often has me imagining what would have happened right afterwards. It's a great film.

Very different from the books but still good
17 November 2014
The first two films were closely based on the first two books of the Left Behind series. There were numerous differences, but overall they were relatively accurate. This one however is very different. I would almost describe this as being inspired by the Left Behind series, rather than based on it. Like the book, it's about World War 3, but it takes place quite differently. Only a handful of events are even remotely similar to events in the book. The double wedding is just about the only event that truly matches that of the book.

This doesn't mean that the movie isn't any good. It contains a lot of interesting and exciting original events. Part of the reason why it's so different is probably because it only covers a very small portion of the book, so they had to come up with a lot of new events, which they did pretty well. But I think it would've been better if they had covered the third book instead.

Be warned that this movie is a lot more violent than the first two. This is by far the darkest and most violent Christian film I've ever seen. Most of the movie (about 80%) takes place either at night, or in creepy dark rooms. There's not a lot of blood, but several people (both good and bad) are killed. It's almost hard to believe that a movie of this nature could be a true Christian film with a gospel message, but it definitely is, probably at least partly thanks to Kirk Cameron. I do enjoy it. I wish they could've done another sequel.

Soul Surfer (2011)

A Truly Wonderful Film
15 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
There may be a few very minor spoilers here, but nothing that wouldn't be seen in reading basic info about the film.

This is one of my favorite films, it's very inspirational and emotional. The fact that it's a true story (overall at least) is what makes it so special. Ironically, I think that my favorite part is the ending credits when it shows videos of the real Bethany Hamilton and things that she has done since the attack. It's truly amazing that she has become a champion surfer even though she only has one arm, it hardly seems possible. She is truly a living legend, and this movie tells the story quite well. Usually I don't have much interest in movies that are based on true stories, but this is definitely an exception.

As a Christian, there are a couple parts that I consider to be inappropriate, mainly the photo shoot. But most of the film is fully acceptable. I was worried that it would be like the movie "The Blind Side" which has a lot of bad language and inappropriate stuff. But thankfully that's not really the case. The fact that Bethany Hamilton and her family are Christians in real life is probably the main reason why. It's interesting that they insisted on having a couple Bible verses.

The shark attack, and the rescue are rather intense, so if you're sensitive to things like this, you may want to skip this part. I don't mind it, I probably shouldn't call it exiting, since it was a very tragic event, but I do enjoy watching it. The rest of the film is mostly gentle.

It is the Truth
5 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
As a Christian, I fully agree with everything that this movie teaches, GOD is real, and it gives some good points about why, points that people need to think about, although some of the argument was simply a comparison of philosophers, which seemed a little pointless.

I enjoyed it more than I expected, and I would've given it a higher rating, perhaps an 8, except for one thing- I did not like what happened to the Professor at the end. Near the end of the movie he's beginning to realize that GOD is real, and is close to changing. But on his way to a Christian concert he is suddenly hit by a car and dies a few minutes later. A Pastor does lead him to GOD as he's dieing, so he does go to Heaven. But I would've liked it a lot better if he had made it to the concert and met Josh there. He could've gotten saved then, and changed his teaching style, becoming a new man. This would've been a much happier ending. I imagine that the writers considered this, but their goal is not simply just to entertain, but to lead people to GOD, and I do commend them for this. Perhaps they felt that the way they did it would be more effective, but it's not the way I would've done it, it was very painful this way.

Wacky but fun
6 April 2014
Much of the movie is not very realistic, some of it's rather crazy, especially the constant shooting, fighting and destruction. They are constantly shooting, but not hitting each other. They're also constantly getting knocked out or injured, but are completely normal again shortly after wards. But it's entertaining and a lot of fun, they must have gone through a lot of work and money to achieve all this. The acting is pretty good, and rather funny. It's impressive that Jim Dale played 3 separate roles, you can't tell that it's him when he plays the old man.

It's great comedy, and while it's not very realistic, there are some good lessons with it. I like the unity and fearlessness of the children, and that helping Eli is all that matters to them. It kind of gives a sense that helping others is much more important than money.

An important video to see.
29 March 2012
It's not a movie, and it may not be the most enjoyable thing to watch. But it's not about entertainment, it's about teaching important items on what made our country what it is, and what we need to turn back to if we are to continue, namely the Bible. For those of you who do not agree, you need to keep an open mind while watching it and really think about it. Even if you do not believe in the Bible and GOD, there is no question about it that it did play an important role in making our country what it is- a fact that is quickly being covered up and forgotten. Kirk Cameron is truly a great guy who went through a lot of work to do this. He has big plans for it, and I pray that it will have an impact on this nation.
