Frasier: The Good Father (2023)
Why? Just why?
When I heard they were producing a sequel to Frasier, I must say I wondered why. They say less is more and in this case that hits the nail on the head. I watched with open mouth at how bad this is. Not even the sublime Kelsey Grammer could save this from being a sad parody of a genius programme that needed no reviving. I've always been mystified why people think so highly of Nicholas Lyndhurst. He can't act for toffee and was the spare wheel to David Jason in Only Fools and Horses. His posh professor's accent jarred on me the same way as his Cockney twang did in OFAH. Mind you, the obvious canned laughter was worse and did little to remedy that. Without the regular characters in it, this revamped version seems as false as a painting by numbers depiction of the Mona Lisa. Again, why try to improve on a masterpiece?
The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (2023)
Poor imitation
If you have seen the original Caine Mutiny you can safely bypass this ragged attempt at a remake. The idea that a Captain in a modern navy could conduct a 36hr search for a refrigerator key to find who ate the last of the strawberries in the mess was a stretch in the original version much less in the present. Keifer Sutherland's performance as Queeg was a pale imitation of that of Humphrey Bogart and the ending was rather forced. Also, the original film scored best, because it actually showed the events that necessitated the trial in the first place. To confine the action to one set, the courtroom, was, in my opinion a mistake because it relied too much on the viewer's imagination of technical situations. If you haven't seen the original, this will probably entertain you, but not if you have.
Sisu (2022)
People are really easily pleased these days
I watched this film with low expectations, despairing of ever seeing a decent film these days. Directors and producers seem to think that the more guts and gore you can show in a film, the better it will be. WRONG! It's the building of a character, plot and action that makes a good movie. Not this unbelievable garbage. Where are films like "Godfather", "Bridge on the River Kwai", " Lawrence of Arabia" et al? If, this crap is what passes for cinematic entertainment, I pity the following generations who will never experience real movie magic. Don't waste your time watching this pile of excrement.
Spencer (2021)
Two edged sword
Watching this tosh I came to the conclusion it was either a stitch-up job on the Royal Family, portraying them as heartless monsters or on Diana, portraying her as a complete fruit-loop. You'd have to watch this pretentious rubbish to decide which is which but I recommend you don't. The frightening thing about this travesty of a film is that there will be people who actually believe what they're watching is true when it patently isn't. I'd have had more sympathy for 'Diana' if she had been a bona fide fictitious character.
The Nest (2020)
Literally flogging a dead horse
A film that will have you fidgeting in your seat wondering when anything is going to happen and when it finally does, you'll ask 'Is that it?'
Finding Your Feet (2017)
Life affirming gem of a movie
Wasn't sure about this movie before I saw it. Like a lot of other films the title put me off but having nothing better to do I decided to see it. By the end I had laughed at the witty scrip; cried during the emotional scenes (I'm a 65 year old man by the way); and left the theatre thoroughly uplifted by a story obviously aimed at my end of the age range. Outstanding performances by British acting royalty Imelda Staunton, Timothy Spall and above all Celia Imrie (is there no role she can't play?). It's story that will make you believe that you should squeeze life until the pips squeak. As I said it's probably aimed at people of a certain age but younger ones may learn a valuable lesson about not putting off till tomorrow what you can do today. A little gem of a film. Go see it!
