Confess, Fletch (2022)
Would have worked better if it wasn't called Fletch.....
I would say this movie would have worked better as a tv movie without the name Fletch attached to it.
But I get it, that's a double edged sword.
On one hand your overall ratings could be a bit better because people aren't going to compare to the original(s), but on the other hand you might get far less people coming to see your movie.
Were the original Fletch movies cinematic masterpieces? Of course not, but they had a charm this Fletch is lacking.
They tried to copy the writing style of the originals here, but that didn't work out as well as they probably hoped.
Chevy's Fletch was a reporter, a poor slob living in an old apartment, always being hounded by some lawyer for alimony. It contributed to the charm of the character.
This debonair Fletch that travels across Europe writing pieces about art and has a rich girlfriend from the start..... no, just no.
They also decided to let go of the original Fletch soundtrack (I liked that 70's Fletch sleuth music).
What I also really missed was the narrating voice that Chevy did, that sort of black and white era detective movie inner monologue between scenes.
And although the character Fletch is an amalgamation of different things, one of his main trademarks was the disguises. Not this Fletch, he at most changes his jacket and his name, but that's about it.
What's left? A mildly entertaining movie for a rainy afternoon when nothing else is on.
Maybe reboot this character under another name and move it to Hallmark Channel?
To be clear. Jon Hamm has a lot of charm and I like the character he created here, so maybe keep the character but lose the name and connection to Fletch? With some tweaks I could see this a starting point for a series of tv movies.
The Sandman: 24/7 (2022)
Unexpected to say the least, with one major plot hole (spoiler ahead)
If you like it or not, get it or not, agree with it or not, this is an episode that stays with you even after it finishes.
Food for thought.
Do I agree with the premise that if everyone stops lying to each other (and themselves) something like this is likely to happen?
With some people, maybe, but with most, probably not.
I won't spoil the story itself, it's worth seeing (and judging) it for your self.
But one thing I didn't get was the destruction of the ruby;
We see John, wanting to use the ruby to change the world by getting rid of lies, but defeating Dream would not accomplish this, so destroying the ruby at that point would be premature and illogical.
And he was stuck inside The Dreaming, how would he get out of there without the ruby?!
Green Lantern: Beware My Power (2022)
What a waste (beware, major spoilers)
Like most DC animations the animations were fine.
With a few tweaks the story would have been okay, but the way they treated Hal Jordan is pathetic.
He is force fed Parallax (looking like some evil caterpillar) and he becomes completely evil instantly, not fighting it on any level.
That famous Green Latern willpower nowhere to be found.....
And Sinestro instantly falling in line, calling him master?!
No, just no.
Very unworthy of the Hal Jordan character, hell, not even worthy of the Sinestro character!
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Good fun but didn't feel like Ghostbusters
I had a good time with this movie, but it didn't feel like a Ghostbusters movie to me, more like a mediocre Goonies with a bit of Ghostbuster seasoning sprinkled over it.
Not everyone will be charmed by the choice they made in centring the movie around kids.
The story was predictable but good.
For me the most beautiful part was the Harold Ramis tribute, nice work.
The cast was okay, but it felt like they put in Paul Rudd to attract a larger (younger) audience that didn't grow up with the original Ghostbusters. Was that a good call? Judge for yourself. I like Paul though, so I didn't mind him being there. He just seemed a bit out of place.
Before today I never realised that Janine and Sheldon's "meema" (Young Sheldon) are the same actress.
Ghostbusters 1, man, 37 years ago, I'm getting old, just like the original cast ;-) Still good to see them back in their overalls after all those years though :-)
Angel Falls: A Novel Holiday (2019)
Made me miss Max.....
When I saw the guardian angel appear I started wondering if Hallmark is trying to recreate the old Max movies from yesteryear, starring the charismatic Peter Falk.
If they did, they failed.
(With "Max movies" I mean the movies where Peter Falk plays the angel Max, like "Finding John Christmas (2003)" and "a Town Without Christmas (2001)")
The tone of the Max movies was more serious, the scripts better.
This was more a run of the mill Hallmark romcom.
Honestly, the whole angel bit could have easily been left out because it really doesn't add very much.
The movie was okay though, as with most Hallmark movies, you could see the end coming from miles away.
Also, the ongoing theme in these movies of characters jumping to conclusions about each other half way trough the movie is a bit outdated.
If you (partially) overhear or see something in the real world that gives you doubts about someone you talk to them about it, right?
I had fun none the less, just don't go in expecting a masterpiece.
This was one of the many many Hallmark movies this year.
It seems they are gearing up towards year round movie production, taking all major holidays (and even seasons) as an excuse to spit out more movies.
I don't mind, the more the merrier, as long as the quality doesn't suffer too much, which it sometimes does.
Some actors and script just aren't that great or original.
I wish they brought back Holly Marie Combs this year, she is so lovely.
I loved Elizabeth Mitchell this year in "The Christmas Club", the soft, loveable, fun type suits her!
I think Paul Campbell (read his bio on imdb, lol) was miscast this year, I love seeing him in roles that fit his own personality, like the role of Gridley in "Surprised by Love (2015)".
Danica McKellar is always hit or miss for me, she is great in movies like "Love at the Christmas Table (2012)" but a lot of the roles Hallmark writes for her are too shallow, or just don't fit her, the same goes for Lacey Chabert.
Rachel Boston, Brooke D'Orsay, Fiona Gubelmann and Rachael Leigh Cook are fun most of the time because they just light up a room.
Missing Link (2019)
Characters never become likable
I think this movie is a mixed bag.
The animation is well made.
The big names are there.
On paper the story is funny.
.....but
For me the characters never become likeable, at all.
'Mister Link' himself has his moments, sure, but Hugh's en Zoe's characters feel unpleasant, cold and shallow.
I don't know what causes this for me, but my best bet is a combination of the way they look (their faces just look unpleasant, emotionless) and the bad dialogue (no character depth, no charm).
Even when these characters show their so called soft side it doesn't feel right somehow.
To be honest, I thought Hugh was portraying a bad guy the first part of the movie.
Not bad, but not great.
.....but that's of course my personal opinion ;-)
