The Outsider (2020)
Haunting & mesmerizing
I love this show! Not a huge fan of Stephen king's works but the storyline, acting and screenplay of this show really hooked me in. I found myself at the edge of my seat, getting increasingly invested in each of the characters. Great balance of light and dark and excellent character development. A must watch!
Singapore Social (2019)
Should be renamed Singapore Snooze
Poorly produced joke of a show - trying to hard to copy The Hills reality tv format, but missing the mark by a long-shot. None of the characters portrayed show any real personality - instead they are all cashed-up, binge drinking millennials who prance around sprouting scripted lines with their trendy hairstyles. There's no heart or soul to the social situations or characters portrayed. Is this a peek into Singapore life? No. Unless you're into aerial shots of the cityscape by night... there's nothing that you can get out of watching this tryhard garbage....it's the wealthy 1% with their rich parents, who have no real problems, fake accents, even faker social connections, stand for nothing and amount to nothing. An utter waste of time.
Euphoria (2019)
Timeless, gritty. A masterpiece!
I read lots of negative reviews about euphoria and as someone of a difficult to please critic, thought I would have the same impression. Not the case! Euphoria dazzled, had me gritting my teeth, crying hot tears, mesmerized by colour and pounding my chest in solidarity with the characters. Very real and raw expression of the new teen reality. As a 30-something I was drawn to emotional parallels of my own teenage experience. The pain and anguish was palpable. The challenges real. Characters gorgeously portrayed with such unbelievable talent from young actors. Found myself at the edge of my seat, marvelling at the cinematography & swelling soundtrack. Binge worthy, sickening, heartbreaking and compassionate all at once. A true masterpiece of television.
Arrival (2016)
Surprising breadth & depth for Sci fi
Really had no expectations coming into this movie but ended up really engaged and moved. The concept, the subtleties and the "between the lines" of this movie get under your skin way after the credits have rolled up. Though the arrival of alien beings onto Earth, a linguist explores the meaning of life, being human and the nature of things as we know them. Amy Adams acting is superb. She elevated the average script and weaves in so much emotion and vulnerability into her portrayal of this character. I am still pondering the questions raised in this movie and it has tangibly changed me.
Jonathan (2018)
Interesting premise, a slow burn
Very interesting concept of 2 consciousnesses in a single human body. The struggles of maintaining order and balance in a messy, emotional & chaotic world. Very slow, ethereal pace - leaves space to deep dive on the premise without being distracted by complicated plots or script. Enjoyable Friday night viewing!
