Wind River (2017)
Hawkeye and Scarlett Witch teams up to kill bad guys
"She ran six miles in the snow." - Jane Banner
Wind River is an Indian reservation located in Wyoming, USA.
==================================
It's a cold and windy night.. snow is falling, the temperature is below zero.
A young girl is running barefooted.
she didn't survived the night.
Cory Lambert, an FWS (Fish and Wildlife Service) agent found the body next morning while he's hunting a lion that prey a local livestock.
turns out it was Natalie, the dead body. Cory's friend daughter's.
how can she's there, in the middle of nowhere, far away from her home?
Sheridan did it again!!
Good writing, good directing, excellent thriller.
although the movie circled around solving a mystery case, Wind River is not a conventional mystery when it gives more attention to the victims and the beloved figure left behind. Sheridan does not let the script overload in thrill portions. smart dialogues, clear motivation from each main characters, to the precision how he leads the audience to a questionnaire scene and the answering moment. all without putting any exaggerations things in it.

"Luck don't live out here. Wolves don't kill unlucky deer, they kill the weak ones. You fought for your life, Jane. And now you get to walk away with it." - Cory Lambert
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007)
A HIDDEN GEM!!
Probably amongst the top 10 list of most underrated movies of the 00's.
The last work of Sidney Lumet (12 Angry Men). another Lumet's magic touch.
tells a story about a tragic family drama, the biggest crime what a man can do to his family, betrayal.
presented in an non-linear way, POV style.
all the cast was brilliant.
PSH was over the top with a charming, confident gentleman who turn into beastly monster character.
Ethan Hawke as the miserable, pathetic younger brother. a looser in the family manipulated by his brother.
Albert Finney's brilliance performance as a desperate husband and father who cannot accept the tragedy that happens in his family.
Marisa Tomei, the opportunist woman who try to be care but doesn't really know what she's doing.
a big picture of what it may called the ferocity of a hungry youngster, complete with the relentless and uncompromising nastiness, the idea of evil and sin, evolves into a cold-sweat tension, fear and tragedy.
Hable con ella (2002)
Say what you wanna say, before it's too late
Yes, this is the type of movie i would recommend to you my friends.
a bizzare and thought provoking movie, a beautiful, compelling and stylish tale about a 'selfish' love.
this is 'not for everyone' type of movie, obviously.
a journalist and a male nurse meet and become friend while both taking care two women they love, who are in deep coma.
if you like a movie with unusual story, you should try this one.
The Bead Game (1977)
THE EVOLUTION
WOW!!
The tree of life. beautiful stop-motion animation of the expansion of animal and human life on this world. in the most brutal way that can be explained.
Enchanting.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
A LOVE LETTER TO HOLLYWOOD
Narrator: "When you come to the end of the line, with a buddy who is more than a brother and a little less than a wife, getting blind drunk together is really the only way to say farewell."
Once Upon a Time, there's Rick Dalton.. a stuttering, alcoholic, faded star who lived next door to Roman Polanski.
The time is Late 60's
Rick Dalton is a mega star of America's television show having a degraded career.
From a main character in many well-known TV series to 'just' an antagonist whose job is to raise the rating and popularity of the series.
alcohol addiction, stuttering, mood swing that often disserve him makes it even more worse.
Cliff Booth, a friend, a driver (Rick was sentenced to not be allowed to drive because he often violated traffic rules due to his drinking hobby), housekeeper and aslo a charismatic stunt double, easy going but firm. for nine long years always accompanying Rick, whenever and wherever he went.
The lack of job offer for Rick, also impacting to Cliff. But Cliff is still Cliff, complete with his loyalty and 'plainness' which drawn my sympathy.
==================================
it's an everyday life story, complete with (nearly none of) its complexity.
I don't know for sure what Tarantino wants to convey to the audience through this film, up until to the climax.
==================================
everything was nearly perfect.
every moment feels so right in place. every soundtrack matches the scene that played and does a great job to bring back those good memories to anyone who lived in that era, from start to end, everything was so balanced.
this is not the usual QT's movie i have watched before. there's a sense of maturity and lots of love in it. Almost like his diary of love to Hollywood's golden decade
an appreciation, a tribute to the most prolific Hollywood's era. A tangible form of sympathy to the dark background that inspired this movie.
It's not pulp fiction, but this is one of his best.
"Everbody love Pussycat"
"Yeah, Who doesn't?!!"
Yi yi (2000)
A majestic movie about everyday story of an ordinary family
Why are we afraid of the first time? Every day in life is a first time. Every morning is new. We never live the same day twice. We're never afraid of getting up every morning. Why? - Ota
NJ is a middle-class father living an ordinary life in his middle-class apartment in Taiwan.
he must confront the reasons why he abandoned his ex-lover 30 years ago, while he also struggle to retain his sense of thinking that work is still important.
his wife, Min-Min, having trouble in her mind, that she feels an emptiness in her life when she must take care her old mother who suffered a coma.
her young daughter, Ting-Ting, feeling guilty about the illness of her old grandma, she cannot sleep every night thinking that she's the one who responsible for it.
Yang-Yang, NJ's young son, the boy who always teased by a bunch of young girls at his school, asking an unanswered question: "Daddy, you can't see what I see and I can't see what you see. So how can I know what you see?".
I remember the first time i watched a drama about how everyday life was portrayed so beautifully like Magnolia and American Beauty.
i was so amazed by its storyline, screenplay, editing and the chemistry between all cast.
This movie was way more beautiful in every sector. The cast was superbly drawn, the dialogues were eloquent and purely delivers us a fantastic conversation, the directing was mind blowing, the script was brilliant as well as the screenplay was flawlessly flowing naturally. There's also so many perfectly taken shots and the editing was very good.
The very essence of this beautiful masterpiece, from my point of view, is how Edward Yang as a writer and director want us to see, there is a second side to every story, and the perception of that side promises new awakenings.
Why is the world so different from what we thought it was? Now that you're awake and see it again... has it changed at all? Now I've closed my eyes... the world I see... is so beautiful - Ting-Ting
Holy Motors (2012)
An act of a man who makes a living by being somebody else
"What made me start, the beauty of the act." - Mr. Oscar
an old man just woke up from his sleep inside a windowless room, he take his cigarette, light it on and start to walking around the room.
not long, he aware there's some strange sounds outside his room and start to looking for a door for wich he meant to find out where is the strange sounds came from.
he finally found one wall that have a key hole in it, hidden by a wallpaper. he open the door with a key that attached on his finger -it's not only attached, it has been part of his fingers, actually-, take his suitcase and walk outside the room where he step on stairs just to find a teather room full of audience watching an old silent movie wich all the people inside that theater is so quiet and without making any movement whatsoever.
now.. that was only the opening scene of this movie.
it was very surreal, that everyone who watched this movie is free to interpret what's the meaning of holy motors is.
some might say it's a story about a man who makes a living by becoming someone else, acting.
others said that it's a story about a transformation that an actor must do on the movie..
and other people might tell you, that this movie was all about how a director shows you the life of film stars and the role they played.
there's a bit David Lynch taste in it but not as complicated and as dark as Lynch's works i think.
and that makes this movie can be so boring af for some people, or you can be so much in love with this masterpiece right from the start.
holly momma.. what did i just watch?!!!
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988)
Beautiful film about someone who love his life and his passion for movies
"Out of the fire of love come ashes." Even the greatest love eventually fizzles out. "
~ Alfredo ~
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso is the aesthetic of someone's love of Film, family, hometown and true love.
So much beautiness that can not be explained only through a simple writing that contains a review, the sweetest compliment. You have to feel it yourself, an experience about following the story of a movie-loving boy from small, teenage and adult.
Centered at the life of Salvatore 'Toto' Di Vita in a small village in Sicily, Italy filled with stories, ambitions, love, life struggles and self-discovery.
meaningful and for some people full of tears.
'Toto' who has no father since his father was avowed lost in the war, befriends with Alfredo the film watcher.. a person whose in charge in the screening of a movie in theaters.
Toto's ambition and love of film is what attaching this like-father-child relationship.
various events full of joys and sorrows, life lessons 'the Dad's' taught, and advices whenever 'Toto' is having a trouble makes this movie just like a family drama about Toto and Alfredo's closeness.
but not only the story about the 'Father-child' relationships, this masterpiece also includes Toto's love story to the woman who would later become his "one and only", in it. she is Elena Mendola, the 'lucky' woman.
convincing act (especially from the boy who played little Toto), elegant storyline, the near perfect directing and the unrelentingly scoring accompanied my journey for 2 hours 35 minutes long without sensing any loss of a moments.
This Academy Award's winner for Best Foreign Film 1990 is a special menu that should be tried at least once by a movie fans, especially by a romance drama fans.
This is a beautiful film about the love of movies and life.
The Birth of a Nation (1915)
The Irony of a Masterpiece filled with controversy.
First of all .. this movie has 2 sides .. Good and bad.
This film is a masterpiece of cinema, The Birth of A Nation is the birth of an art, the art in motion pictures.
everything featured in this movie wasn't all that good. the acting department wasn't too convincing, quite theatrical.. a bit excessive. it's just that the central figure has something more, a convincing acting that later catapulted her name in the Hollywood cinema world. Lilian Gish who played Elsie Stoneman very well.
The advantages of this film is in technicality. cinematography which is a new breakthrough in its era, the camera angle that makes a scene reach the audience, backgrounds and night camera techniques, lens focus, the editing scene per scene and of course its MOVING CAMERA.
everything tasted fresh.
The first part of this movie feels magnificent and epic. it's far from the controversy and about 15 minutes of it full of bombs, gun smoke, dozens of horses, dozens of cannons and hundreds of extras in the crazy Union vs Confederation civil war scenes, at least that's what I had in mind considering this movie is 113 years old. the shot techniques using bird's eye view and medium shots alternately adds more excitement in watching every action scene, not to mention the shooting technique using moving camera that focus on the 'little colonel' on horseback. the climax was the confrontation of two different friends in a situation of confusion on the battlefield that led to the death of both characters.
The second part of the film is the controversy and causes a lot of impact afterwards.
throughout the 3 hours 15 minutes of this film, 90% of its extras of black people is 'white people painted black'. this was already a very strong racism, not to mention that the Afro-American people in the second half of the film was depicted as barbaric and superficial, full of exaggerated emotions.
in order to understand what I mean, I highly recommend you to watch this movie. especially the second half of the film.
all of the controversy was overrun by KKK (Klu Klux Klan) which been made by the director as the 'savior' of the country from the tragedy that devastated the southern region of America.
regardless of all the controversies, this film is a milestone in the history of world cinema, especially for war and epic genres.
many films are trying to figure out how the Civil War happened after this movie and make this film as an example.
it is the irony of a masterpiece filled with controversy.
Intolerance: Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages (1916)
The Best Movie of silent era
Intolerance (which can be seen perhaps partly as a response to accusations of perpetuating racial stereotypes and glorifying the Klu Klux Klan in Birth of Nations) is considered by many to be his masterpiece, and indeed the greatest film of the whole silent era. Griffiths mammoth film, also subtitled: "A Sun-Play of the Ages" and "Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages.", consists of four distinct but parallel stories that demonstrated mankind's intolerance during four different ages in world history. Intolerance was a colossal undertaking filled with monumental sets, lavish period costumes, and thousands of extras.
Get Out (2017)
slow pace at first to build the story.. and then Boom.. you get what you don't expect
2017 have the next best thing in mystery and thriller genre from this movie.. For the thriller fans.. it's a must watch movie.. The lead actor, Daniel Kaluuya is so good in playing a black-vulnerable-yet-brave-guy role.. I love how the director makes a beautiful girl (played by Rose Armitage) can do such dark and crazy things.. I can feel the suspense and the mystery of this Armitage's family.. what i didn't expect is that the ending is so good that makes me so satisfied at the end of the movie..
