What a mess! Excellent entry to Michael Shayne series
20 August 2023
Mix murder with mystery and add a few drops of humor. Remove it -not shake it. The result? An excepcional, fun, entertaining movie that happens to be the first of a series of Michael Shayne mysteries. And what an entry!

Lloyd Nolan shines playing a charismatic, smart, dynamic Michael Shayne with brains and lots of resources to solve any mystery - including counting on aunt Olivia's help!. Nolan really excells in this role.

The script (by Stanley Rauh, Manning O'Connor and Brett Halliday) is very well done with constant twists and tricks and a frantic rhythm. Dialogues are brilliant and funny (see trivia section). Shayne messes everything and constantly tricks police providing false evidences and turning everything upside down with the invaluable help of aunt Olivia (great characterization by Elizabeth Patterson), a murder mystery fan.

Sets are effective and beautifully designed. All the actors play at their best and the mystery is trully effective.

All this makes this movie a highly enjoyable and very entertaining film.

Absolutely Elvis
14 May 2023
Only a humble tv movie but the best portrait of Elvis by far. Kurt Russell simply IS Elvis. His looks, his movements, his full performance should deserved an oscar. Shelley Winters is great too, delivering a perfect portrait of Elvis' mother.

Although not Elvis' voice Ronnie McDowwell singing is superb. His sound and singing style really resembles Elvis' in this movie.

You can see Russell enjoys what he is doing - in fact he declared he was an avid Elvis fan - and Carpenter really cares about the film, telling the story of Elvis -the man and the singer - in a respectful way. Not a explotation film although several facts have been altered or inacurately shown. Bit slow-paced and clearly low-budget, the movie is however, a complete and honest report on Elvis life and music.

Mrs. Harris social agitator
14 May 2023
Poor adaptation of Paul Gallico's novel Flowers for Mrs. Harris this movie lacks all the charm and beauty that its 1992 predecessor Mrs. 'Arris goes to Paris starring Angela Lansbury and Omar Shariff had.

Not only the script omits all the enchanting facts in the novel but also adds some ugly and utterly annoying touches -like the garbage collectors strike (!?) and the cabaret scene - that seem to be added on purpose to ruin the fairytale atmosphere and frustrate the viewer. No opportunity to disappoint the viewer is wasted here. The novel main "character" - Dior dress- is minimized to an uninspired and trivial one and by no means a matter of main importance for Mrs. Harris. Her friendship with the marquis is changed into a frustrated love story instead, not to mention Mrs. Harris' cook friend conversion into a totally different character. Mrs. Harris herself becomes more interested - and angered by - social differences than in her dreamed gown. Even at the Dior fashion show dresses can not be properly seen.

In the novel everybody wants to help her to thank her for changing their lives for good but here one wonders why.

Under the premise of adapting a fairytale style book this movie desguises a totally different, irritating and disappointing message and what's worst, it makes it in a subterfuge way that annoys much more than the film itself.

Do you a favor and watch much better and true to the novel spirit 1992 Mrs. 'Arris goes to Paris instead, a lovely sweet fairytale with solid authentic performances and full of kind-hearted characters.

A Cinderella story
1 May 2023
This humble movie explains a simple beautiful story mostly effective due to miss Lansbury merits: an English charwoman sees one of her clients' Dior gowns and immediately falls in love with it, deciding from then on to save every penny to achieve her dream. Her determination and strong will will make the dream come true. Miss Lansbury performance is what instills life to an apparently simple character and she does it beatifully. Like a modern cinderella, miss Harris will go after a dream and will know friendly lovable characters along the way.

Based on Paul Gallico (Poseidon adventure and Lili writer) book titled Flowers for mrs. Harris this light hearted cinderella story is full of nice characters and transmits good feelings. Omar Sharif plays the marquis and Diana Rigg plays the sales chief of house of Dior. The script changes the novel's ending for good to a more Hollywood style one.

Fashion designer Jane Robinson made the marvelous Dior-like dress that gave her an award and she certainly did a good job...it is simply wonderful and fits miss. Lansbury beautifully.

As a curiosity, there is a German series starring Inge Meysel that adapts the four mrs. Harris books.

Blouf

A mere glance on Veidt's filmography. There are no biographical notes, lacks depth and contains lots of spoilers. Narrated with a thick German accent as if done by Veidt himself - who, by the way, had a much better English pronunciation - with an obsession on certain matters and poorly written it is a wasted opportunity to throw some light on the life of this today almost forgotten actor whose career began in the early twentieth century and spanned almost three decades, including an assorted range of characters from his beginnings in silent movies. Main flaw is its lack of interest. Not what this fine actor deserved.

Grotesque grand guignol exploitation film
26 February 2023
I guess this movie has been made for millenials who do not know nor even care who Elvis was and maybe never listened any of his songs. Elvis 2.0? No, thank you. More an update of Freaks, this three rings Elvis circus is visually very similar to Moulin rouge or The great Gatsby. Sort of loud colorful nightmare and shamely clearly made for pecuniary purposes only. A dirty unpleasant look with lots of pastiche colors, disgusting cartoonish characters, impact dramatic effects, dirty mind plot tricks and constant fast jumps. The script is poor and unaccurate but provides all kind of low dirty tabloid stuff to appeal the kind of audiences it is addressed to.

If you like Elvis songs and music go for 1979 Elvis movie. Kurt Russell just provides the best performance I have ever seen of Elvis. He IS Elvis and by watching the movie you feel you are really watching Elvis. But that's a completely different story...

View master in motion
28 December 2022
As my sister says this is maybe the most view master like of all 3D movies. The depth perception is remarkable and well achieved without using many of the usual 3D "tricks" - although the scene where mine explodes throwing rocks to the camera is certainly impressive and the gun descending slowly to Van Heflin's from the roof is breathtaking, just as if could reach it yourself.

The story is about a group of partisans who fight against a corrupt official during the mexican revolution and a gold miner - always excellent Van Heflin - who helps them in order to recover his mine and ends falling in love with a young revolutionary woman - Julie Adams. A young Abbe Lane -who would marry musician Xavier Cugat- appears as Julie Adams' sister in an early role.

A lot of incidents took place while filming the movie, and many specialits got hurt. Miss Adams herself felt from her horse with no major injuries.

As all the originally 3D filmed movies this one greatly improves if watched in 3D, adding a lively touch to the movie.

So long, baby. Mike Hammer in 3D
11 December 2022
A gun fires through a half-opened door. A one-arm dying man crawls towards the camera while the chair where his prosthetic arm lies moves back unabling him to reach it. In the next scene a man climbs up the stairs to find his army pal shot dead. This is the first Mike Hammer film in 3D and must be seen in 3D to really appreciate its quality. Fortunately there is an exceptionally well restored 3D version that makes of this film a rare noir gem. John Alton photography is breathtaking, especially in the zenithal shots - view from the top of the Bradbury Building (that has appeared in many other films such as D. O. A.) is simply stunning in 3D - and use of shadows. Light contrasts are superb. Although Alton won an oscar for An American in Paris his photography work for black and white movies is powerfully shocking.

No "tricks" here like a fire torch splashed into the camera eye. Any 3D detractor should watch this movie. Not the usual 3D method of emphasizing certain elements and relegating others was employed but all of them are in relief instead. The opening scene with the firing gun is maybe the only license to that use. The result it is an exciting watching experience that brings the whole set to life by highlighting every single element. 3D experience upgraded.

As for the cast, Biff Elliot plays decently although wooden a tough, rude and violent Mike Hammer, boxer- type (he had been a boxer himself in his youth). Peggie Castle plays a psychoanalyst and does an excellent femme fatale, Preston Foster has a small but solid role as a police captain and Margaret Sheridan is the ever- efficient Hammer secretary (Perry Mason's Della Street type). Role of the dead man was played by real life single -handed Robert Swanger in his only screen appearance.

Based on Mickey Spillane's book I, the jury some facts were changed - cocaine traffic to jewelry smuggling, twin sisters' nymphomania and Hammer's final shot from spontaneous to in response to be almost killed.

Special mention for the 3D-inside-3D view-master type shot surprise gem. This scene only makes the movie worth watching in 3D only and an enjoyable experience for any 3D and view master fan. Do not miss it.

Deadly Tropics (2019– )

Poor results
31 October 2022
This tries to follow the path of excellent Death in paradise but clearly falls. Main problem is both main characters are poorly written and not very sympathetic. Main failure is that screenwriters have tried them to be police women acting like old cliché policemen (drinking a lot, always looking for sex, etc.) and these sort of masculine personalities do not benefit their characters -otherwise poorly written - at all. The idea of putting together two different personalities should work fine but the problem is that both of them end acting the same and it becomes hasting and boring. Chief has two -as usual- unbearable egotist teenage children who you wish were sent yo study abroad or else. Her police companion is sort of a free-spirited one: no real engagement, living freely in a sailboat and constantly changing partner. Writers seem to confuse being independent, strong will women with a constant look for sex and not being able to deal with children. This only shows that women can be as stupid, empty brained and superficial as cliché men characters they are supposed to portray and this is the opposite that writers want - or isn't?

Also there is a disagreeable indoctrination smell floating over this series. Many episodes are about sexual matters: assaults, sex options, abortion, prostitution,...and while it is a regular basis for today's tv shows the way they are shown is outrageoulsy focused on trying to infuse a how to act and think lesson that is usually more than morally doubtful.

Opposite to Death in paradise here we mostly only see the ugly aspects of the islands: poverty, explotaiton, misery,...so not even worth watching for the landscapes.

A wasted opportunity to make a fun and entertaing show in a paradisiacal environment.

Boring, indoctrinate and uninteresting police soap opera
31 October 2022
I couldn't bear watching this series except for the first four episodes. It is not only very boring but also -as it also happens with another police French series Tropiques criminels - tries to indoctrinate watchers with questionable points of view as if watchers were unable to think by themselves. It is unrealistical and ridiculous having a policeman going nuts because the person who he is questioning calls gays by a pejorative name or that the chief police gets so drunk she can not say if the man he has sleeped with forced her or not. On the good side there are no blood or nasty sequences. On the bad side it is terribly boring, all the characters are unsympathetic and uninteresting. There is more time in each episode dedicated to crew members' personal life rather than the case they are working on and if writers thought we are supposed to find this interesting were totally wrong. Chief police is a woman unable to control her own life and who - as usual- has a troublesome irritating teenager daughter who blames her mother all day long. (Why do most screenwriters describe teenagers as spoiled unbearable and egotistical is something to be considered - maybe they are frustrated parents with that kind of children?). Exactly the same as in Tropiques criminels. Maybe both series share the same screenwriters.

The new police on the block is disagreeable, he does not like to work with the crew and acts arrogantly. None of the characters makes you interested to know how they private lives run so why write about it? Maybe if the crew was more likeable or maybe if the cases were more interesting and would take more screen time it would be more interesting. But as it is is a totally time waster.

Pure sensationalism television. Do not waste your time watching this. This series do not even try to be educational or to explain illnesses at all. The dramatizations are badly done and lack of minimal interest or veracity. In the Andy Gibb episode the photo of him with kari michelsen is a fake photo cut and pasted from the real one of him with victoria principal... that only can provide an idea of the authenticity level of this series. A demonstration of how low a television show can get to obtain audience at any price. Unbearable to watch. Better read a good book instead. Panem et circenses.

CODA (2021)
7/10
The sounds of silence
13 June 2022
Better than the original french movie La famille Bélier, coda tells the story of a deaf family with only one hearing member (its daughter), who has to deal with the fact that she must be their interpreter and only communication link to the hearing world.

As happened with its predecessor, the film fails in the same places.

By showing the deaf family more like dumb or simple minded rather than taking the chance to show the real problems and daily struggling they have to face a big opportunity is wasted. It is possible -and would have been a far more interesting movie - to make a comedy and yet show what being deaf means and its challenges.

Departing from an interesting premise - a deaf family and their communication difficulties with the hearing ones -the film fails into a parody instead.

Being this one of main flaws of the film it is either unbelievable -and somehow insulting- that any of the family members lack the ability to communicate with hearing people. A nice improvement from the French version was changing the brother role from being unsubstantial one to a more mature one (the brother-sister discussion about him being able to do her interpreter work is a point that should have been deeply developed).

Several other things seem to be out of place (deaf father driving? -maybe in the USA) The ending scene with daughter singing in front of their parents using hand sign language while she sings so her family can understand what she is singing about sure is a nice one -by the way, the original lyrics in the French version were changed since they were not about leaving home for good but a farewell note from a kid who is going to commit suicide) but I rather much prefer the scene where she is singing at the school festival and her family has gone to watch to her.

All of a sudden sound is off and we can have a terrifying glimpse of what being deaf really mean. To hear no sound. Any sound. Only watch her moving her lips. In the end other people applause. No sound at all. That IS what really means being deaf. That was for me the best and most emotional scene of the movie. Really goose feather.

Good will movie but...
13 June 2022
Departing from an interesting premise - a deaf family and their communication difficulties with the hearing ones - this could have been a really interesting movie but sadly fails in many aspects. The Bélier family have a farm and all their members are deaf except their teenager daughter, who has to be the family's interpreter since they can not communicate with hearing people otherwise.

This is one of main flaws of the film. It is not believable that nor the father nor the mother have the skills to communicate with hearing people (how did they manage before their daughter was born?). Apparently they can not read lips nor learn to or have an interpreter. Too hard to believe. And so their daughter has to do this job apart of going to school and it begins to be too much for her, especially when she discovers singing at school and wants to sing professionally.

Another big flaw of the film apart of a peculiar -a bit gruesome - sense of humor, Departing from an interesting premise - a deaf family and their communication difficulties with the hearing ones - this could have been a really interesting movie but sadly fails in many asapects. Another flaw of the film apart of its peculiar and a bit gruesome sense of humor is the way the family is shown. They seem more dumb than deaf. Obviously done for amusing purposes -and failing- the fact is that deafness is presented as a sort of short minded state if else that annoys rather than amuses. It was a good oportunity to show deaf people daily life wasted.

Several other things appear to be out of place and not funny at all (younger brother sex adventure or daughter first period) and all these things diminish films good intentions, wasting a good oportunity to enter in a different world with its own daily struggles and challenges. Should the script had shown these instead of being a mere parody it would have been far more interesting.

The ending scene with daughter singing in front of their parents using hand sign language while she sings so her family can understand what she is singing sure is a nice one -by the way, the original song is not about leaving home for good but a farewell note from a kid who is going to commit suicide resulting in some words being changed- but I rather much prefer the scene where she is singing in a school festival and her family has gone to watch to her. Adrastea Vs Janus
15 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, Némesis is not a bad movie. It is a good action movie with lots of action and spectacular space battle scenes. But it is not a Star Trek movie. At least not the one I would have expected nor desired as the end of a saga.

It has several highlights: a nice complex non-unidimensional villain, an interesting family-like plot and, as said, the always exciting starship battle scenes.

But it has some big flaws that make it flop. First -and most important-of all. Roddenberry's so much wanted likeability of the characters is ambiguous here. Capt. Picard's especially. From the beginning we see how most of entreprises' crew is leaving for one reason or another: Riker and Troi get married (a scene, by the way, that would have fit much better at the end of the movie, in Betazed and bringing back her mother's Lwaxana character -Roddenberry's wife in real life), Worf going to work to another spaceship and dr. Kruscher being promoted. So having no family of his own captain feels a bit sad and lonely having his family-crew left.

In the original script (co-written by Brent Spinner, John Logan and Rick Berman) Shinzon was to be capt. Picard's real son instead of a clone. But Patrick Stewart did not accept it since his character had already had an almost-son in one of the series' chapters. So they change it to a clone. Big mistake. Feeling lonely as he feels for his tripulation leave, it would have been an interesting plot the finding of an unknown son and how they relationship would evolve since Shinzon has Picard's "bad instincts" raised to the top. By making Shinzon a clone, script writers seem to forget that a clone is a physically identical -not mentally- copy of another being; while sharing the same exterior appearance clones have different minds moulded by each own experiences and consequently different personalities. So Shinzon character is nothing related to a young Picard nor has anything in common with the "original" apart of the façade (by the way, is not rather silly that he is presented bald to us? It is supposed that Picard had hair when he was younger).

Another flaw: if the inhabitants from Remus are in fact disjoined romulans, why do they look like monsters or trolls? They should look alike very much as romulans only with the expected adaptations to the lightless world (mines) where they are forced to live: bigger eyes to adapt to darkness or maybe blindness to light.

On the other hand, why would the remans would confere the leadership to a human? (even a clone of a human). That sounds absurd. It would be more logical that they used the clone for their own interests as a way to attract the federation or Picard's interest, taking advantage of clone's megalomaniac tendencies (that is, typical human character flaws) The scene of the big starship battle has also a BIG flaw: having broken the frontal view pannel a crew member is succioned by decompression of the cabin. However, NONE OF THEM seem to suffer the effects of the non-oxygen athmosphere! Although we have seen in many other occasions (i.e. Star trek the next generation movie) how the crew use space suits AND helmets to be able to breath out in the space.

Also, the scene where Picard decides the enterprise to collide with the scimitar is completely foolish. Would the regular Picard ever do such a massacre of his own crew killing thousands of innocent people? Never. Not at all.

Another flaw: much of the regular crew members are totally wasted and do not have much to do along the film, something that ultimately damage the film. Tom Hardy does a good job playing a more interesting than usual villain, but he has really not much to work with. LaForge-Data friendship that appeared frequently in the series is replaced here for Picard-Data's probably to provide Stewart with more protagonism. In the series, each episode was mainly centered in one of the crew characters. This does not fit well in a movie, where due to its length should provide enough screening time for all the characters.

Apart of this, there are some other big flaws to consider: having only one, Data decides to give his transport device to Picard so he can return to the enterprise and get saved, leading him to a secure death. It is rather silly that he has been provided with one single transport device, moreover when he is sent to save the captain and bring him back to the ship! Also, haven't we seen thousands of times in the series that one transport device can transport more than one people as long as they are attached one to the other? Data could have left a time bomb to destroy the Scimitar and come back with him to the Enterprise. Happy ending.

Also the scene where data gets ashamed of his "brother' B4, (happily eliminated in the final movie) is rather unfortunate.

In dvd interviews' director says he wanted a sort of Rebel without a cause story. Someone else wanted it to appear like a Shakesperean play (see Shinzon's death trying to get closer to his "father" while theading himself more into the lance). Maybe that's why the final result is a sort of melange, non exploring any field completely and leaving too many loose theads while spending too much time in unneeded scenes.

So with such a bunch of nonesenses let's see if by correcting all this and put the right stuff together can get a more likeable Star Trek style story:

At the beginning of the story Capt. Picard receives a call from the federation. The romulans have asked for a mediator to negotiate peace and, although with prevention, the federation decides to send Picard and the enterprise since they are the nearest fleet starship to romulian planet.

Once there, when contacting with them before going down to the planet to meet them, Picard recognizes himself in new reman leadership and gets astonished.

How can it be?... in the movie, Picard gets angry by discovering he has a clone because this means he is no unique. This reaction does really not fit Picard's character at all as we know it. He should feel intrigued, astonished but never ravished or angry. Changing Shinzon's character from clone to son would certainly have helped to add some positive interest and compassion to him from Picard that we do not see at all in his character in this movie but were commonly attributed to him in the series, more compassive and even. In fact, as said Picard is shown in this movie acting a bit silly (like when driving the car in the desert race) and egotist, traits totally unfaithful to his regular character.

Goaded by this discovery and trying to find out if new leaders want peace or not, he and his crew meet in Remus, where he learns real Shinzon's story (an unknown born child from a young Picard love interest would be more suitable and palatable than a clone, maybe kidnapped with his mother -who would have been later killed- by the romulans to adoctrinate him in order to substitute real Picard). But to do so romulans need Picard's ADN to accelerate Shinzon's aging so he raches real Picard's age sooner. This way they will introduce him as a saboteur in the federation to end with it. The fact that the romulans decided to abandon the "project" due to a government change is quite silly, it would have been more credible that the opressed remans had striked back the Romulan government and decided to go on with the plan.

So Picard and his son meet. Meeting scene should surely have been much more intense with a much better script. In the movie they almost do not chat and the scene has not relevance at all in the end. It was a great opportunity lost to show us that they do really share a deeper link farther than being father and son. Under the megalomaniac tendencies of Shinzon there shuld have shown a blink of a connection between them to be used later in the film.

Following this first meeting ship crew discover a strange and dangerous radiation coming from the planet. This make them suspect of the real reman intentions but before they can get capt. Back to the ship, remans show their true intentions, capturing Picard and deposing Shinzon (who only then realizes he has been used by both romulans and remans).

The enterprise crew send a recovery team to the planet, while remans plan to kill Picard and destroy the enterprise.

But Shinzon's plans difere: hating now both romulans and remans and being captured by the remulans with Picard, he is convinced by his father that both romulans and remans have the same intentions: to use him for their own purposes and destroy the federation and the earth. At this point the message of the film is revealed: one can always change as long as he purposes to, it all depends on his desire to do so. Being a better human is at our scope and can only come from inside oneself. From now on they will look up to the stars together -Picard says (referring to their first meeting converstion). Once convinced, they get united and ready to escape from the planet.

In the meantime the saving crew arrives and take both Picard and Shinzon back to the enterprise (they bring enough transport devices for all this time ;) running away from the planet. Reman ship scimitar follow them and a space battleship takes place. To destroy it a crew member must introduce himself to the scimitar to make it explode. Data is the one. Once there, he puts a time bomb into the scimitar and transports himself back to the enterprise. The romulan ship is destroyed. Federation is saved and peace triumphs. The enterprise returns to the federation space. The Riker-Troi wedding in Betezed could easily been put here as the final scene, with all the naked guests seen from up -back only, providing a funny ending (funny moments were common in the series but scarcely seen in TNG pictures including Deanna's mother Lwaxana flirting with Picard once more). The End.

Police dream team
15 December 2021
Commander Lea Soler and Captain Paul Marchal work together in Montpellier police. But they are not only a good police team. They were once married and have teenagers son and daughter, mantaining a good companion relationship. Together with their subordinates leutenant Erwan, medical examiner Franck -who is always trying to date Lea-capitain Sabine, lieutenant Camille and other members of the police station they solve crimes. Interesting cases that do not contain disgusting scenes nor violence, the series benefit of an excellent cast and good sense of humor, including all crew members' relationship, main couple's and their childrens'. Many of the cases shown are related to French regional issues such as ancient castle financial maintenance problems, oysters' breeders or archeological researchers, adding a plus of interest. Recommended.

From rags to riches?
28 November 2021
Based on Lois Eby and John Leming novel The velvet fleece and excellently adapted to the screen, the movie benefits from a well written script by Herb Margolis, Lou Morheim and William Bowers and from excellen performances by the whole cast. Not only John Payne and Dan Duryea provide their characters with solid credible acting. Also Shelley Winters does a good acting job as the femme fatale obsessed with Payne. She was an actress who had deserved more subtle roles that the ones she usually played. After shining in musicals, light comedies and adventure movies, Payne did several interesting film noirs with Phil Karlson: 99 river st. And excellent Kansas city confidential. Always credible, he conferred a solid presence to his works. This movie is not an exception mainly thanks to great dialogue lines. Screenwriter Bowers also did the script of several other good noirs like The web, Criss Cross, and Cry danger. Payne, Duryea and two more partners are confident men who work scamming rich people. When their last job fails they decide to go for a young wealthy war widow. But problems begin when, while payne is trying to seduce her, Duryea's girl Shelley Winters tries to seduce Payne - who is falling in love with the widow - causing complications and leading the job to fail. Deserves a watch.

Man of two worlds
23 August 2021
First movie version of the play Berkeley square, by John L. Balderston, that was a huge success in Broadway in 1929 also played and co-directed by Leslie Howard and Howard Miller. Had a remake filmed in 1951 The house in the square (aka I'll never forget you) with Tyrone Power in the leading role that in my opinion was better than this one.

Although Leslie Howard plays the role properly - in fact he was Oscar nominated - it lacks of passion and interest. All the cast seems too theatrically affected and although all of them play their roles convincingly their performances are mainly plain and bland, too emotionless, a common fact in British acting.

Another problem with this movie is that, on the contrary to the 1951 version, it is quite stagey we never watch any of what supposedly attracted the main character to the XVIII century: intellectuals, way of leaving in that era, social changes. Not even a glimpse of it. Only a ball at their residence. Nothing that lets us understand why this man would want to travel past. This causes the film being rather dull and dated, since the film gets centered in the love story only. In the 1951 version the main character travels to past to discover a supposedly nicer era - he was a scientific. But in this one one wonders why he wants to travel to past only to find a romance he can find in his own era. Any historical character appears here excepting Joshua Reynolds and the duchess of Devonshire, no visit to historic places or learning something about XVIII century way of living (we learn he has gone to meet the king and feeling disgustingly disappointed by watching him mock his nose with his fingers) so it ends being quite bore movie.

That being said, the film has its values: scenography and fashion designer are excellent. It was a lost movie until a copy was found in 1970s, restored and shown in 2011 H. P. Lovecraft film festival.

Past always looks better than it really was

Based on John L. Balderston play Berkeley square that was also loosely based on Henry James unfinished novel The sense of the past and a remake of the 1933 film of the same title starring Leslie Howard. The movie begins almost as a sci-fi film in a laboratory where scientifics Michael Rennie and Tyrone Power work doing atomic tests and follows as a mystery noir when they arrive to Power old XVIII mansion in Berkeley square. There, watching the surprising similarity between a Power XVIII century ancestor's portrait and he, he begans to explain to his friend a theory about returning to XVIII century, "the age of reason, of dignity and grace, of quietness and peace", as he says. As Rennie leaves the house a thunderstorm falls and time travel begins... As the movie moves on we have a glimpse of what XVIII century really was aside of Power romanticized notions: an obscure time, full of social injustices, children work and misery as well as the illustrated era that produced men like Joshua Reynolds, dr. Johnson and James Boswell. But how did the bad things have changed if progress advances arrived sooner than they really did?

Although this "historical" part of the story is not enough developed in favor of a love story, the film presents an interesting reflection about past times looking better than they really were. Authenticity is captured by accurated sets of XVIII London (reconstructed in London Denham studios) show a dirty, poor city with enormous social and class gaps. Even the "smell" of the poor city is noticed in a scene. In a nice scene Tyrone Power character goes to the poorer part of the city and can not stand the "smell" of it, putting some perfume drops in a handkerchief to avoid it. We also see the making of the matches, that did not in fact appear until XIX century. There is a bright scene referring to Georgians' lack of hygiene when everybody gets scandalized when knowing Power takes a bath averyday!

Excellent costumes designed by Margart Furse and splendid house interiors that bring a past century in all its splendor, the house becoming a character in its own right.

Filmed in England, Tyrone Power did a research on XVIII century by reading James Boswell writings Life of Samuel Johnson (dr. Johnson's most accomplished biography) as well as his London Journal, learning British customs and habits of that era.

As a curious note, when searching Georgian furniture for the movie in London, British dealers stated that they were practically cleaned out of pre-regency stock furniture by American antique hunters, estimating that more Americans than British owned Georgian furniture, making difficult to obtain pieces for the movie at affordable price.

Two scientists (E. N. Tiratsoo and I. S. Hallows, of an enterprise related to nuclear energy development) advised the studio on how to built the atomical research station.

Actor Raymond Huntley, who plays Helens's fiancee played 1970's BBC series Upstairs & Downstairs family solicitor sir Geoffrey.

Although I would have changed the ending for a more suitable one. Since there is no mention to Helen in Standish diary, a brighter and more imaginative explanation could have been that in the end Peter took her with him when the storm comes. Since she is not afraid of the future but interested in it and willing to live it, and because at one point she is even able to watch it through Peter's eyes and gets more fascinated than afraid of (a much enhancing and positive scene in comparison to 1933 version), it would have suited perfectly, making a more accomplished ending.

A tv version was also filmed in 1949 starring Richard Greene and Grace Kelly.

Highly recommended.

A heartful story
15 August 2021
Beverly Simmons and Fay Holden mainly sustain the picture, a good will fable about a wealthy lady who, after naming her dog her heir, is sued by her relatives and put in a mental institution, from where she runs away finding refuge in a barber shop where a poor family takes care of her not knowing who she really is. This is one of the few movies little child actress Baverly Simmons filmed and she is one of the film's interests. Her acting and interaction with Fay Holden gives the movie a heart. Frank McHugh plays the role of the barber in a convincing way. Not a great movie but nice to watch, enhancing good will feelings in a well wrapped story. Recommended.

Mr.&Mrs. Connors rise their dream vison farm
15 August 2021
Mr. And Mrs. Connors are a happy couple. They live in a nice house in a nice quarter with nice neighbours and no worries...except that Mrs. Connors has a strong unaccomplished desire that gets worse when her neighbour shows the new mink coat her husband has given to her: she WANTS A MINK COAT.

And since they can't afford to buy one, she has a bright idea: to rise a couple of visons so when they grow up will provide enough furs for a full mink coat. And so she rise the visons in the backyard. But simple as it seems things begin to get complicate and the dreamt mink coat brings more headaches than anything.

This is a nice comedy with good performanaces by the whole cast: Dennis O'Keefe and Ruth Hussey as the married couple and Eve Arden and William Demarest as their neighbours. Add Hope Emerson as the vison farm owner and the result is a nice entertaining comedy that provides a nice uncomplicated entertainment.

A night at the nightclub
15 August 2021
Second Paramount's musical parade short featurette. Lita Baron was a Spanish singer that joined Xavier Cugat orchestra performing in several clubs until she was discovered by Hollywood and put in several films. 4'11'' Lita married 6'4''Rory Calhoun making a funny couple. They recorded the album "His and hers" together and both starred in the western High valley before filing for divorce in the late 60s. In this short Lita plays the wife of the club (George Reeves, later tv series' superman) and also the club singer, providing a fun entertainment, full of colour and rhythm. Nice to watch. Thanks to our Aussie friend.

Four hits any Peggy Lee and jazz fans will sure enjoy. Thanks to Mike for sharing.

Brilliant

XVIII century. British actor David Garrick is giving his last performance in London before leaving to Paris invited by the Comédie Française staff. But when saying goodbye to his public they get angry with him for leaving and throw him vegetables so to calm they down he lies by saying he is going to Paris to teach French actors how to act. Only a theatre writer member of the Comédie Française is there and tells it to his fellows, who decide to give a lesson in acting to Garrick that he shall never forget. In order to do so they hire an inn where Garrick is going to stay for one night before arriving to Paris to pretend they are who they are not. But he has been previously advised by the theatre propmter, who happens to be his fan and a mysterious young beautiful stranger appears changing the whole plot a bit and providing an interesting final twist to the story... David Garrick was maybe the most renowed British actor. He had an incredible success better for introducing the "modern" way of acting, that was extremely Pompous and bombastic until then.

The film clearly benefits from an intelligent sophisticated well written script by Ernest Vajda full of witty dialogues, a non-stop timing and excellent performances from the whole cast. Add a perfect scenario with superbly done set designs fitting like a glove like the ones in Marie Antoinette's movie (Vadja's script too) and will obtain a great entertainment movie.

Brian Aherne -an underrated actor that could have been easily the British Errol Flynn- delivers an excellent comedienne performance as witty smug Garrick. Olivia de Havilland is perfect as the lady in distress (and she looks impressive in her first appearance wrapped in spectacular Milo Anderson coat) and the movie runs easily to spend a nice time watching. Highly recommended.

Barcelona y sus misterios - a story of will and principles
15 May 2021
Based on Antoni Altadill 1864 two volume best seller novel Barcelona y sus misterios (Barcelona and its mysteries), this serial movie includes eight episodes: 1. Barcelona y sus misterios (Barcelona and its mysteries), 2. El barco contrabandista (smugglers' ship), 3. La herencia de los seis millones (six millions inheritance), 4. Los falsos monederos (the counterfeiters) 5. Los limpiabotas (shoeshine boys) 6. La voluntad de un moribundo (a dying man's last will) 7. El retorno de un presidiario (the prisoner return) and 8. La muerte de Diego Rocafort (death of Diego Rocafort) Filmed by Albert Marro and exhibited in cinemas in 1916 as one episode per week, the movie was an enormous success, getting excellent reviews and audience acclamation. Sadly, in 1918 a big fire destroyed Albert Marro's hispano films industries, getting not only this movie but almost his entire production lost (a much shorter version of another Marro serial movie, La secta de los misteriosos, was recently partially recovered and edited in German).

The movie tells the unfortunate love story of Diego and Clara in nineteenth-century Barcelona and their struggle to meet again through all kinds of adventures and misadventures ranging from a slave ship to the social and political changes of the Barcelona of the time. Filmed in Barcelona, the now lost eight part movie shows a city full of mysteries and corruption where, in spite of the calamities suffered by the main character and the vicissitudes that happen to him throughout the film, his moral integrity and unconditional love and fidelity to his principles will manage to make him triumph over any adversity, thus overcoming all obstacles.

Due to its huge success a second six part series was filmed in 1917, entitled El testamento de Diego Rocafort with a similar cast.

Although the movie is not available to watch, this is a highly recommendable novel to read.

Lamour magic
7 March 2021
A hidden gem inexplicably never released in dvd. Entertaining story with a solid script, nice performances, touches of humour and two enhancing songs beautifully sang by miss Lamour: Mexican magic and the one that lends its title from the movie: Moon over Burma. Although not appearing wrapped in a sarong here, miss Lamour is as beautiful as talented and she is given her usual not-a-bit-of-a-dumb girl character type that clearly benefits the film. In her memories she recalls how happy she was not having to wear more sarongs and having a new haircut much more comfortable than the long hair she wore in her usual native girl role. Both Robert Preston (who had just teamed with Lamour in the same year production Typhoon) and Preston Foster do a good job and act nice together as a pair of pals who manage a Burma lumber camp but this is definitely a Lamour movie and she shines in it as the night club singer and pretended bride of Robert Preston's crackpot character, who brings them to the jungle camp. A real snake that terrified miss Lamour, a water jar incidented bath, an indecent sunsuit and sabotage in the form of elephants' illness, a phantom tiger, a jungle fire and a trunk jam add emotion and action to this nice adventure movie seasoned with beautiful songs and good performances. Recommended to enjoy a nice and entertaining time.
