Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
A Great Cure for Insomnia
It's time for Hollywood to stop living in the past. What a horrible movie. The plot was almost identical to the original only watered down and so boring I almost nodded off twice.
The acting was cringe-worthy, especially from the "original" actors. The main protagonist was unlikable and delivered her lines in a flat dead pan manner.
If you think for one second this lives up to any of the hype think again. This was a money-grab pure and simple. Or, if you are enchanted enough by the marketing to believe this is so great and that it's a grand revival - you might want to check in to have the mind-control chip removed from your head.
This movie stinks and does ZERO justice to the original. I gave it 3 stars for the decent CGI effects. Other than that I would not recommend this film to anyone. Complete and utter waste of time and money.
Immigrant (2013)
Brutal Reality of Abuse
It's a shame that the IMDb rating board has become a facebook-like forum for childish people to vent their feelings toward either the filmmaker, an actor or maybe a boom-boy.
Would one think for one second Paul Sorvino would be in a film that deserves one-star because it's amateurish? Come on really?
The movie is very dour, but it seems the filmmakers experience was so. What I didn't really understand were the flashbacks of old NY City from maybe the 1940's and 50's. I don't see how it related to the story.
The acting, and story is quite good as is the cinematography. Samuel Dixon the boy that played Daanyik did an excellent job. You could feel the rage through the screen. In fact many of us growing up got bullied at one time or another (unless you were the bully) and he did all the things we imagined we wanted to do to those bullies, but thankfully never did.
Angela Gots gives a very nice performance as the stubborn Meela. She is not shrill nor annoying. I'm assuming some reviewers have a personal issue with her perhaps. She played the part as it should have been, somewhat domineering and hard-headed to get her way.
I find this a very well-done film with a VERY important story to tell. My hats off to all involved. It was well-done. It was definitely not the CGI dull-witted Hollywood movies I normally fall asleep through.
Again, I'm not deconstructing every angle and scene. I'm simply reviewing as a movie- lover and I felt this was a good movie well- worth watching.
Lucifer's Angels (2015)
Someone's High School Project?
This is so bad. Where to begin? Not scary. Horrid acting and camera work. Not even campy in an Attack of the Killer Tomatoes way.
The dialog from the get go is about as bad as you can get. The scary "tah-dah" scenes have all the suspense of the handle clicking when your gas tank is full.
The woods marshmallow cooking scene is where I just about had enough. The scary stories about the nuts from the old insane asylum was so canned and horrid, I wanted to cry. And where did they get the actors from? Did they pay them in beer?
IMDb, how in the world did this get a 7.8 rating? Maybe if it were rated 7.8 of 100 perhaps. Just bad bad bad.
Get on Up (2014)
Pure Funk with a Positive Message
First and foremost I LOVED this movie. I am not a huge James Brown fan, but do really enjoy his music. That said, this is a movie that spins a negative into gold. Why in the world are so many people obsessed with the man's drugs, wife beating and can't get enough (check out the negative reviews...they most all say this movie needs more sleaze...really?)Who needs more Examiner and Tabloid stories? Not me, and you won't find it here.
The negative while touched upon is not dwelt upon. The movie focuses on the proverbial silver lining in the dark cloud. Yes the man's life was messed up and it showed in his behavior. Of course it did. But the movie more so focuses on how he OVERCAME all that negativity and spun it into literal gold. He could have given up and become another thug and nobody with a sob story, but he did not. The true something from nothing story everyone should see. It will really make you appreciate what you have (a lot or a little). The guy literally came from a dirt shack with ZERO family or community support. So it CAN be done.
Chadwick Boseman's portrayal is superb if not Oscar worthy, the music is pure funk and even tells the story of how and why it came about.
If you have not seen this - GO and take your kids! It's inspiring and well-done. Bravo!
