Paper Boy (2018)
A frustrating and cringeworthy experiance.
Paperboy is unique in that even though it boasts no star cast or a high marketing budget, it was in the minds of people even before it released. Most likely the production house behind the movie.
Story:
On paper the concept of two people loving each other solely due to their overlapping thoughts and their love for books might seem intriguing or ridiculously stupid depending upon your perspective, but the way it is executed in the movie was an utterly stupid. The way the story established is through matching underlines in books form a library. Yes you read that right, "Matching underlines"(ha ha). Then the movie stops exploring this ridiculous topic and tries doing some other.... ahem interesting things. It tries to reason why it is okay for a very rich person to love a very poor person. The execution is okay and kind of believable unlike the stupid book stuff. The intentions of the hero and the heroine are never understood as they change very fast from scene to scene. An example is the interval scene where the actress introduces the actor to her friends as a software engineer inspite of him being a paperboy. The actor becomes angry/sad at this and tries to go away from the actress. This was the only decent scene in the movie if viewed independently. But the whole conflict dies down in the first post interval scene with the actor apologizing to the actress(just why????). There are many such instances where the film fails badly.Another glaring problem with the movie are the dialogues. I don't want to explain them but are painful to listen to. They reach to a new level of stupidity and are delivered as if they are some enlightening philosophical stuff. I can't explain why in English as the dialogues themselves are in Telugu but they are on par with one of the famous memworthy dialogue from the fate series: "People die when they are killed". Need I say more.
Cast and acting:
It was interesting to see very few(almost zero) familiar faces throughout the movie. I was only able to recognize two people who also work in some TV shows. It looks as if the movie sticks to the no star cast rule. My problem with this movie lies with the cast, especially the main lead. He does have some talent in terms of showing some expressions and a decent dialogue delivery. The problem lies in his transitions from one emotion to another. It's choppy for the lack of a better word. The director also is responsible for this problem since sudden tone shifts were visible throughout the movie and is just lazy/incompetent writing. There is also a lot of cringe with some of the actions the Main lead does. One prime example is the eye brow thing he does a few times during the movie. It is supposed to be aimed at the audience by breaking the fourth wall. I don't understand it's purpose as it was neither funny nor is anyway cute to look at in anyway.
The other actors were surprisingly borderline good/okay. Especially Satthi and a few other people who act as friends of the main lead. The actress is okay in her role.
Overall:
I was not too severe with the review of the movie as i didn't want to sound too biased towards the movie but the rating definitely shows my experiance with the movie. I definitely do not recommend anyone to watch this movie. Peace!!
Byôsoku 5 senchimêtoru (2007)
A must watch for any anime lovers or non anime lovers
"5 Centimeters per Second" is an animated movie that tells the story of two childhood friends Takaki Tohno and Akari Shinohara, who are separated due to Akari's family transfer to another region of japan for his father's job.The movie is divided into three parts. Each telling the story at different points of their life. The story is pretty straight forward but manages to deliver it's message quite beautifully. The movie focuses on Takaki Tohno, how he deals with the separation from his childhood friend and lover and moves forward.
The animation quality is extraordinary. The characters are well made. The background details and camera angles compliment the different settings that the movie has. Tenmon did a great job in delivering a great soundtrack that matches well with the pacing and mood of different scenes of the movie. To summarize the movie, it takes the story of growing up into something no less than a masterpiece with great characters, excellent storytelling, pleasing art and soothing music.
