Death and Other Details (2024)
Patinkin's embarrassing Aussie accent. Leading lady hired for her blank stare?
Yikes. Where to begin?
The bad:
1. Mandy Patinkin's cringy take on an Aussie accent
2. Far too much time spent by director trying to capture different expressions on leading lady's face, only to find blank stare in most cases.
3. Episode1 exploits a few actresses who bare it all while writhing around in pointless sex scenes geared towards titillating the pørn-sick.
4. Far too many characters, and far too many look alike. We common folk understand that there's a movement to minimize the presence of white actors, but make your choices distinguishable please. All characters other than the lead have mousy brown hair & similar faces.
5. Disappointing storyline stumbles between Imogene's past and present. They haven't spent enough time on the character's past to make her likable. And she definitely isn't likable in the present.
6. The Asian characters are unlikable. Is that intended? It seems like a bad move in this climate.
6. Too much to mention.
The good:
1. The costumes and sets are attractive.
2. Mandy Patinkin is a favorite. But I'm cringing with every word.
Feel the Force (2006)
Really enjoyed it!
Saw two episodes of this show on BBCA and really laughed! It's a pity that they aren't showing it any longer. The two police ladies getting fired and having to wear signs to advertise for a golf shop while trying to persuade a guy against committing suicide...it was hilarious! I'm surprised to see such distaste for this program by other reviewers. Maybe we watched different episodes. I'm hoping they'll release it on DVD so we can see more episodes. I actually enjoyed it far more than other British comedy I've seen (Are you being served and Keeping up appearances, for example).
The only other British shows I bother to watch are Hustle and Midsomer Murders. Anyway, I'd recommend giving it a chance and making up your mind instead of following reviews. I just hated to see this show get such awful reviews when my opinion is that it was worth watching.
Serenity (2005)
Amazing move to the big screen
I am stunned with Serenity in movie-form. I went in hoping it would be good. Hoping it wouldn't make me feel sad for Joss. After all, Buffy (in movie-form that preceded the series) was such a disappointment. But Serenity turned out to be more than I expected. Throughout the movie I laughed, I cried, and a few times I nearly jumped out of my seat with surprise. Joss and the cast went well beyond my expectations. The storyline was fresh while also tying up story lines from the series, the characters were further developed so we felt even more understanding of their actions, and the effects and scenery were beautifully original beyond the comparable sci-fi films of outer space. I'll see this one again and again. You should as well.
