Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (2023)
Binged it all in one day!
This was a wonderful addition to the Bridgerton series, and in my opinion, the best. I honestly didn't realize that Queen Charlotte was based on the real Queen Charlotte who was married to George III. Also led me to do some reading and there are accounts that Charlotte did indeed have a darker complexion and I love that this was used to imagine a world where as early as the late 1700s races could intermingle without (much) prejudice. How much further would we be in this journey if this were true?
I also enjoyed the dive into King George's illness. The acting of the lead roles dealing with this was fantastic. The ensemble cast was amazing too. A much watch if you liked the first and/or second season of Bridgerton!
Accused: Ava's Story (2023)
An interesting look at surrogacy and deaf culture
This was such an amazing episode of television. A deaf woman is acting as a surrogate for a wealthy couple that have struggled with infertility. Ironically, the baby is born deaf and although the mother is dealing well with the news, the father is disappointed because he wanted a "musical" baby. Fast forward to the father wanting to put in a cochlear implant in almost immediately and the surrogate "overhearing" a very bad argument between the couple about their baby via eavesdropping with a special app on her phone. She freaks out and takes the baby trying to get to Michigan where she thinks she can adopt the baby because they don't honor surrogacy laws. She wants to protect this child from the same life she experienced with a mom who never bothered to learn to sign and also gave her a cochlear implant which made her miserable. She turns herself in when she realizes that her plan won't work. The court scenes are heartbreaking and I loved the conclusion. The acting is fantastic and the story was well paced. Great follow up to an outstanding first episode and I'm excited to watch what comes next.
Sister Act (1992)
One of my all time favorite movies!
I don't know how this movie doesn't have at least an 8.0 on IMDB. This movie came out when I was a kid and I wore out the videotape. At its heart, it is a story about love, acceptance and redemption. Yes, there are religious overtones, but they are not overbearing or in your face. Instead it focuses on the true good of spirituality in its portrayal of what religion should be...a place for comfort and fellowship. The music is fantastic and there are so many laughs. I was raised a good little Protestant girl and although this story is Catholic in its origins, I appreciated the similarities in the religions rather than the differences even at the young age of 10. The religious thing didn't take for me as an adult, but I can still watch this movie and laugh, enjoy the music, and feel the joy it brings to my soul.
Free Guy (2021)
So original and fun!
I love this movie. I hated going to the movie theaters before Covid because people have gotten so rude with their phones and I have a nice TV at home to watch movies. I love Ryan Reynolds though and we went on a Monday so the theater was basically empty. It was worth donning a stupid mask in August heat (despite being fully vaccinated) until we got to our seats. I'm pretty sure this is the first movie I'd seen in theaters since "The Last Jedi" so it's been awhile. Still wish I could've watched it at home, but I'm so glad I went to see it. My husband and I both loved it. He loved the video game references which I didn't catch as often, but it was funny, sweet and actually an ORIGINAL IDEA which is lacking in Hollywood these days. I knew it would be enjoyable, but it really was an excellent movie!
Friends: The Reunion (2021)
If you actually love "Friends," this is for you!
I grew up with "Friends" from the 7th grade to my early 20s. It is my favorite show of all time. Episodes still hold up to this day and it always makes me laugh. This reunion was an amazing nostalgic look at the show that shaped my adolescence/early adulthood. The amazing chemistry between the cast felt just like old times. I loved seeing them reminisce with each other. I honestly wish there's been less gust appearances, no James Corden, and just all of them on the set being themselves with each other. Still, I say 10 stars because I got to see my favorite friends together again and still felt like their characters would be "Friends" forever!
SparkShorts: Kitbull (2019)
So good!
I've watched it twice and cried both times. Makes you feel all the love for animals while hating those who torture them for their own gains.
Modern Love (2019)
Sweet couple but the setting is ridiculous
Why can't Hollywood get anything right about medicine? This guy gets a cut that maybe needs 8 sutures and he's taken to the hospital in an ambulance with lights and sirens. That's only for people who are coding or close to doing so. Then he's stripped naked for a cut on the arm and put in a gown by a nurse like he's a baby who can't dress himself. Suddenly he's having emergency surgery for apparent nerve damage from a superficial cut? Nope. Even worse, after the surgery he's in a wheelchair going around the hospital with his date despite not being able to use one of his arms just so they can show him trying to wheel himself around with one arm. So ridiculous. No wonder people think you have to get a bullet out of someone or they'll die. Newsflash...taking the bullet out will do more damage and risk infection. The setting completely distracted from the actual story because it was so ludicrous.
