For many Zack Snyder's fans, just like me, it is hard to admit, but .... his last work "Reel Moon, Pt1" is a lame.
It failed, in many aspects. Lets go one-by-one.
Plot&story: it is nothing new, we are seeing cosmic level version of classical Seven Samurai story feat Star Wars. With villagers who will suffer from evil empire (typical tyranny just like Empire), main protagonist who hiding from her past and now helps villagers by searching warriors for future battle, failed homeless warriors of the past and now looking for revenge and purpose of the life.
I am not going go deeply into the cast and acting performance, lets just said ZS decided to follow with "300" legacy and majority of characters either has shinny oiled muscle hands and well trained ABS, which you can spot from mile away. God,.. I thought such trend has ended with in mid 2000 with Michael Bay movies, but then again, remember what studio behind Rebel Moon, so no surprise.
Visual effects & cinematography. I want to be wrong but it seems the movie had small budget, the way how terrible was visuals at landscapes scenes (Planet views, city views, horizons) this is something you could not expected from ZS, ever. It way either lazy team of trainees or just not enough budget for proper team. The positive from visuals effects, is face animation of individuals. Like animation of old battle robot- Jimmy (voiced by sir Anthony Hopkins), "spider lady", creatures and animals. Visuals for shinning (high-temperature) Nemesis blades looks great. The Director favorite, slow-mo feature is being used way too often and at scenes where it is not needed. Following, that let's go to fight choreography and how it is at the screen. It is not remarkable, no memorable, it is just weak. The slow-mo features in shooting and fight scenes is not focusing at actors, stunts, flying bullets\laser shoots it is just looking somewhere else, at the sand, at the actors back, at the table. This features does not show in details remarkable actions, it just waste of resource.
Music & sound. 12 hours after watching - I don't remember main music score for this movie, and themes its characters... Sounds design and mixing, i'd say not bad, but not a stunning.
Overall, we seeing a product with some raw, cheap, non-finished, materials which is only has interest for audience because of Director name. I really hope for part two creative teams, producers, director, STUDIO(!) takes some time, and work properly with mistakes of first part. But for now, i'd call Rebel Moon Pt1, the worst ZS movie.
