Miraklet i Gullspång (2023)
Annoying
Without asking questions this type of documentary filmmaking is just voyeurism.
There are so many unanswered questions throughout this documentary. Towards the end the makers stop the action to interject that, they are upset because someone is lying, - I found myself shouting - Where were you at the beginning when there were glaring questions that needed asking ? - even when they interject to say this they never pursue it because it exposes the documentary itself.
It seems to me that the makers started making a film about these quirky characters and their "miracle". It then became a much more complex story and at some point they realised they'd been duped but they'd already spent a great deal of time and money so they carried on and decided to just let the subjects give us confusing information and not pursue it in any depth.
It became all about getting the film safely over the finish line and not about answering any questions.
I find this very selfish film making - you exploit your subjects and you exploit your viewers.
3 Body Problem (2024)
Casting and dialogue are awful.
Couldn't get further than one episode - the opening sequence in China was pretty good and drew me in but then we are introduced to our main characters- some of the cleverest scientists in the western world at the top of their profession and unfortunately they are just badly cast and have dialogue akin to university first years - seriously it's terrible dialogue and doesn't in any way make the characters believable.
Diversity in your casting is great but the dialogue and characterisation in this production works against the diversity and makes no one seem like a real person at the top of the scientific community. Can't tell whether it's bad acting or bad direction maybe both but it's all just awful.
Red Rocket (2021)
Marketing this as a comedy is at best misrepresentation and at worst very distasteful
First things first I thought the acting was really good in this film hence 4 stars - but the whole lightheartedness around the grooming premise the story is based around I found really distasteful. The film maker has decided to market this film as a comedy when in fact its a tragedy - no its not black comedy, no its not tragicomedy - unless you are laughing at the general actions of the main character - in which case its distasteful.
The idea that you can say the actions are in any way comedic is terrible - he's a sad, self serving user and a lying sexist with no likeable traits. Tell me which bits I'm meant to laugh at - his horrible misogynistic treatment of his estranged wife, his grooming of a young girl, his causing a motorway pile up ? There are no comedic bits from any characters in fact they are all pretty tragic. The only reason I watched to the end was that I thought that some sort of redemption would occur - but no, it just got worse and the inclusion of the gratuitous running naked through the streets towards the end seemed to be only there to try and get some lightheartedness out of what had been a hard slog.
Well done actors you did a good job and I hope you get a better film to show off your talents in the future.
Wild Wild Country (2018)
Quite interesting but seemingly biased in its omissions
Very interesting story but too centred on the power and guilt of the "1st officer" and failed to question the power and guilt of the leader.
How wonderful the producers should get this commissioned as a 6 part documentary series and how unforgivable that they should then fail to give any "in depth" investigation. So many shocking things are mentioned in passing and then glossed over - the more I watched the more I thought the lawyer for the commune had to be a co-producer. The ending is again glossed over - the "cult" had communes all over the world operating without the leader residing with them so why did the commune collapse in the USA when he was deported - was it not because he ran away with all the money and it couldn't maintain itself financially. No in-depth explanation of the massive immigration fraud no in-depth investigation of the financial side of the organisation no interviews with disillusioned commune members no questioning of how this intelligent all seeing guru didn't know what his personal right hand woman was doing in his name and to just say he was taking drugs and that they drugged the homeless people as a quick aside in the story left me thinking someone is deliberately not giving more investigative detail here. Oh and the lawyers last quote - I'm writing the definitive book on what happened- thanks for the 6 hour advert for that !
Wanderlust (2018)
A Trainwreck of a program
I watched the first episode with increasing confusion and annoyance. These are good actors completely let down by the writer director and producers. No one seems to know what type of program they are supposed to be making. Are these characters meant to be lifelike or extreme caricatures ? Is this a sit com or a light drama or funny social comment ? I fails on all levels. Even Toni Collette's wide eyed performance has a feeling of rabbit in the headlights "how the hell am I supposed to play this" !
The dialogue - particularly the teenagers - is awful and un-natural.
There was one scene halfway through with a couple having their first counselling session with Toni Collette and the husband is acting his heart out as the man with the supposidly amusing trait of being "incomplete sentence man" and unable to coherently say exactly what or how he feels about his relationship. He then takes a very long pause leading into a lovely poignant section where he finds the right words and emotion but its over in a flash and the terrible dialgue returns - I spent the whole of the rest of the episode wishing we were following the story of this man and his wife instead of the dire main charracters.
I can see how the idea got commissioned and hyped by the media on sexual content but it really needed better helming to avoid this trainwreck of a result.
Split (2016)
Its a nice movie
I agree with the other two reviews here - its a good film and worth way more than the 3.3 rating. Making low budget films in this genre is the hardest thing. You never know if light comedy scenes are really going to work until they're cut together. This film is so close to being great and given a better budget and a couple more rewrites I'm sure it would have been. Towards the end it seems rushed and I bet they would have re-shot a couple of scenes had they had the money. Having said that the acting is superb and its really well shot and framed. The sound mix is not great but I imagine that's just the money for a really good dub that was lacking. All in all I liked it and would love to see these actors in more stuff.
