It Chapter Two (2019)
Tries Too Hard
As I write this review, my husband is Googling how the movie ended because two hours have passed, nearly an hour left, and nothing significant has happened.
I thought the first one was really well done so I was excited to see Chapter Two without getting my expectations too high to avoid disappointment. Well, I am disappointed anyway. This movie is drawn out with unnecessary scenes of flashbacks for EACH. INDIVIDUAL. CHARACTER. They've added goofy zombies which do nothing for the film other than make it comical. The storyline dies slowly, little by little, with every passing, painfully slow-paced minute.
We're about to walk out.
The Intruder (2019)
Terrible But It Did The Trick
This is probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen. However, we were looking for an easy-watch that we didn't have to take seriously; something to just fill time before bed and this did the trick. Kept us engaged and discussing the movie (mainly commentary on how ridiculous it is and how idiotic the main characters are).
If you're in the mood for a guilty pleasure, something as bad as Tyler Perry's Acrimony or Temptation, this is along those lines.
The Resident (2018)
Step Away From the Gimmicks While You Still Can
The show started off really good. As someone mentioned, it's no "House" but Season 1 started off pretty engaging.
In Season 2, however, it seems like the writers fell into the cheap, Grey's Anatomy gimmicks. They started to focus less on medicine and much more on romantic relationships. The most annoying of which reduced a very likable, smart character to a pining, unfocused, pitiful shadow of his former self.
I love Mina and Austin's relationship as mentor and mentee. Surely they'll ruin that before this season ends, too. Sex and romantic relationships are not the only way to develop characters, as evident by Mina and her mom, Conrad and his dad, and even the short windows when they show us the compassionate doctor in the typically egomaniacal Dr. Bell.
Because of this formula being used so heavily in the first half of Season 2, it has made it predictable. Bring back Conrad's rough edges, which was much more interesting than this ever-smizing McDreamy version of his character. Remind us why we liked Pravesh. Do not ruin Mina and Austin or Alex and Nic by, predictably, throwing them into a bed together. Stick with more intelligent story lines.
Greta (2018)
Infuriating. Horrible.
This is probably one of the worst films I have ever seen. The acting wasn't great to start. Both main characters seem to phone it in with their delivery and empty expressions, though they did get a lot better toward the end of the movie.
However, the characters just aren't developed very well. There's no background given for Greta other than her daughter's ex-lover, in a horrible over-acting scene, saying "that woman is ill" following a very brief story of abusive behavior towards Greta's daughter. Frances' response to the dire situation in which she finds herself don't seem to align with earlier behavior when she is brave enough to face Greta and tell her to leave. It's when she's fighting for her life that she runs out of ideas. But once she's alone, locked in a room and tied up, she manages to find the energy to thrash around?
A lot of it didn't make sense. Frances goes missing and her dad calls a private investigator instead of the police. Private Investigator finds where thrashing noise is coming from while left alone for some time. Instead of putting a move on because it COULD BE the missing girl you're searching for behind this wall...no, no. Let's take our time and get killed instead. Frances had one moment of redemption and finds herself a chance to escape. But instead of breaking a window and escaping through the main house, she goes DOWN INTO THE BASEMENT and tries to break a narrow window through which she will never fit. Finds a bodybag and stares at it. (GASP! What could be in a bodybag filled with what appears to be something shaped like a human?!)
I can go on and on. Really, I added these spoilers to hopefully save you from a horrendous movie night. Watch something else.
Sierra Burgess Is a Loser (2018)
"Veronica Is A Good Person"
This movie should have been titled "Veronica Is A Good Person."
The only reasons I'm giving this movie more than 1 star are the cast and that it kept me engaged and interested. The first half of the movie had me hopeful that Sierra and Jamey will develop a connection, Sierra will do the right thing, and all will be perfect.
In the latter half it becomes evident that Sierra is selfish, entitled, and just plain mean. She takes no responsibility for her own choices, even against the advice of her best friend. Rather, she blames everything/everyone else to justify her actions. (My gorgeous mother stuck me with this body...my friend kissed my boyfriend who actually thinks I'm her...living under my dad's shadow is making it difficult for me to find my own identity). To echo the reviews of those who were equally frustrated, it's ridiculous that Sierra came out of the mess she created unscathed, with perfect boyfriend showing up unexpectedly to take her to homecoming.
Meanwhile, Veronica, proves herself a true friend and kind, compassionate human being even after being humiliated.
While this movie brings to light the great pressure our youths face to look a certain way in order to be accepted and sends a reminder that there is more to a person than their physical appearance and Instagram followers, it sends another message of the harmful sort. It sends the message that it's okay to trick someone into falling for you. That you're entitled to someone's love despite your acts of manipulation simply because they have no business caring about your appearance anyway. That it's okay to commit heinous acts against friends because you're entitled forgiveness.
But these things are not okay.
Verónica (2017)
Waste of time
Like many of you, I finally agreed to watch this movie because of the social media hype. I scare easily and was afraid I wouldn't be able to handle it so I resisted for weeks.
About an hour into the movie, I finally called it quits. Not because it was too scary, like many people have claimed, but because it was an absolute snooze fest. When I saw that there was 45 minutes left, I realized the pace had been set and it probably won't get any better.
For some who scares easily to get bored with a scary movie should tell you a lot about this film.
Big Hero 6 (2014)
Great Family Fun
Let me make this short and simple--
If you couldn't find humor, warmth, and just a plain good time with this animation, you take life waaaaay to seriously. Get off your high horse and find your inner child. Yes, you, with the two and three stars who make it seem like this movie is such an abomination. Not every movie has to be a magnificent work of unfathomable genius with some epic, life changing meaning and complex character development reminiscent of the drama in your own life that has turned you into such a Scrooge.
This move was awesome. It was funny...it was sad...it strayed away from the typical children's movie formula and actually addresses death, grieving, and relationships meanwhile keeping its rated pg charm. Most of all, it was HILARIOUS. It was goofy, silly, fun type of hilarious.
