Honestly Such a Fun Time
26 June 2019
Man I miss movies like this. This was just a fun feel-good comedy movie. I absolutely had a good time. And people looking at this movie going all film-critic on it are doing too much. This is just a fun time. Enjoy it. Of course it's got plot holes and everything but it's not meant to be an artsy perfect film for God's sake. Oh. Love it. I would give it a 10 for how I feel right now but an 8 seems a little more fair.

Black Mirror: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too (2019)
Season 5, Episode 3
4/10
Started off Black Mirror-y, Then Lost 100 IQ Points
9 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I don't want to be that guy that just hates on stuff. Unlike a lot of people, I was looking forward to seeing Miley Cyrus on the show and putting some darkness into her Hannah Montana persona. The episode started off not really about Cyrus' character but about a teenage girl and her apparent obsession with the Ashley robot toy and the popstar. I thought, alright cool. Maybe the robot will slowly turn dark and manipulate the girl. Then we see the sister come in and there's this sibling tension and the fact that their mother died and the father seeming totally emotionless. I was like ok, that's another direction we could go. Then we cut to Ashley and her psycho manager and I was like alright. We've got some story lines here. Bring it on.

Oh boy...

Once Ashley got poisoned, the episode went totally stupid. How did they spot one quick moment of her stashing the pills with a camera? Are they like watching it with immense detail all the time? Why would she keep her stash and her DIARY somewhere they could get to with seemingly no trouble? How can they put the grinded-up pills in fast food - wouldn't it kinda ruin the food opening it up and mixing it in there? Why did nobody question a shellfish allergy inducing a freaken coma? Is that even a thing? Why were they able to block off the room at the hospital? What about the emergency medics and the doctors and so on? Why would they even let the team close when even family members have trouble seeing their loved ones in such situations? Extracting songs from her brain - umm... what?? How come the main girl's Ashley Too was the only one seemingly that went haywire like that? And all it took was connecting her via USB to a computer and clicking some user interface to shutdown her firewall? Are you kidding me? Why would they set it up like that at all? Why have her whole brain in there at all? And how was the thing able to get any memories from the real Ashley after purchase? Are they constantly being updated with her memories even though they only want people to see that 4% of her brain? How in the hell can the girls just sneak into this celebrity house like that? Is EVERYONE a total psycho accepting this hologram Ashley? This would be incredibly controversial! SHE IS STILL IN A FREAKEN COMA. The whole scene with the pest control thing to sneak into the house was freaken ridiculous. And then why wouldn't the Ashley Too robot want to get evidence? She just unplugs the power; also, all that equipment has just one power plug and no backup in case of a power outtage... Why wouldn't the girl put the plug back in to save Ashley if she felt that bad... The doctor guy, the manager, the bear dude, the kids' father, all so damn one dimensional, you kidding me. And this big bear dude woudn't collapse from a freaken mouse robot thing, my God. Even tasers don't knock people out, they just stun them. When Ashely finally woke up, why wasn't her first instinct to CALL THE POLICE HOLY CRAP?! OR THE GIRLS!?!? And they just almost got murdered by doctor dude. They seem completely unphased by this... And some reviews mentioning that the message was still there. None of these "messages" got proper development. All just ideas put in and left. That really doesn't mean jack all.

Oh man. And after mentioning all that, I really can't see how you can still enjoy this without just turning your brain completely off. I'm only giving this a 4 because the first part was decent but the rest was...

Bad Roomies (2015)
4/10
Not a fun comedy and kind of a mess.
9 April 2016
If you're looking for a light-hearted fun comedy that you won't have to think too much about, this is not it. It's not Neighbors or an Adam Sandler film or something like that. It's more of a clever dark comedy. The film makers wanted to make more than just a mindless film, and I really appreciate the attempt.

Now each scene separate to me is actually well written and well acted, and if I had seen them like that instead of as one continuous film, I would have laughed my butt off and been pretty entertained. But that's the thing. The movie feels like the writers wrote each scene separate and then strung them all together without much thought to how the pieces fit, leaving a lot of things (like the way the characters acted, the random things that happened, etc.) very inconsistent and sacrificing a potentially solid story. And by the end, I'm left thinking, "Oh this could have been so awesome man!" But nope :/.

Aside from how the scenes are put together, there are things about the premise of the film really don't make sense, like how the roommates own the beautiful house without either of them seeming like they earn enough $$ (and I think this film would've worked even better if it was in a normal apartment), how they are even best friends (the crazy psycho paranoiac entitled brat guy vs the normal nice chill guy - to me, in the real world, the only way that would work is if the nice guy had amnesia every minute or felt sorry for the guy and was friends with him out of pity, neither of which the film puts him out to be), why the girl attempted to seduce both of them when she clearly just liked one of them, etc.

And then there's the twisted moral code of the film that makes it seem like the girl roommate (Chloe) was actually in the wrong when she didn't really do anything wrong, and that what the guys were doing back at her was totally fine in this harmless game of playing fire with fire when really, it was incredibly childish and pretty sick sh*t.

All in all, this film had such awesome potential but wasn't given enough time to reach that potential, so yeah. I wish it did. It's not a good clever comedy nor is it a fun mindless film, which makes it kind of pointless to watch. But anyways, it's not horrible, and I think everybody deserves some credit, and I don't think you'd regret it too much if you watched it, and I'm actually looking forward to seeing all the people involved grow to make better films.

The Hunt (2012)
10/10
Oh my word. This is a masterpiece. This is legit a masterpiece.
25 July 2015
(Before I start, anyone reminded of The Crucible watching this?) The thing most viewers loved about the film was how great the story was. But something I would like to point out and why I say this film is masterful is because you can analyze this film to its core and it gets better and better - not the other way around - and that is something that you can almost never do with most films. That alone is a sign of great writing and directing, and that is of great credit to Thomas Vintenberg and Tobias Lindholm for crafting a consistent tightly-knit story revolving around such a touchy subject, and to those wondering about the name, it very nicely reflects the phrase "witch-hunt", which is what people are doing in the film.

As you've probably read/heard by now, the story is about a teacher who is falsely accused of a horrendous act. Now, even though that is the key point, what the story is really about is how something as simple as the belief in a child's innocence and a few words can get people to completely turn on a person, no matter how irrational or unfair or evil they are being in doing so, in this fit of mass hysteria and paranoia. It's about how terrible social justice and opinion is, and even worse, how terrible it can be to be on the bad side of it. The film also touches on the relationships between people, especially friendships, and how situations like this put these things to the test. It presents how events like these reveal a certain disgustingly maddening aspect of human nature that you would never really imagine to be there, and in that sense, it becomes a fascinating study on human behavior, and from this spawn the debates of many many viewers attempting to make sense of everything. And all of this is gradually built and developed, immersing you more and more, which is crazy because you already start off very well immersed. Multiple times during the film, you feel like you have reached an ultimate low view of humanity and the peak of passionate rage, and then it keeps going and going! You will be on the verge of tears! Now this cannot be achieved without near-perfect acting performances from everyone in the cast, not just the main characters. Mads Mikkelson pulls off one of the greatest performances I've ever seen from this type of character. Every line of dialogue he says not only is so well written but is so well reflected in the performance. I can recall many moments during the film wherein the way he acted is exactly how I've seen people in somewhat similar circumstances. And what's so great about both the acting and character of Mads Mikkelson is that he's not just some clichéd utterly vulnerable guy. No, he actually has some strength and pride to him, and he won't just take all the bull!@#$ that comes to him. I loved it! There were so many satisfying moments that came of that. Thomas Bo Larson also completely encompasses a best friend who is being internally pulled apart by the situation, and by the time we see him complete his arc, his character is imprinted in the minds of the viewers as one of the great aspects of the film. And as honorable mentions, I have to say that all the child actors felt refreshingly real and EVEN THE DOG! There was especially one scene where you are not even sure if the dog is legit doing what is being seen or is some kind of movie magic being pulled off here.

Now, in this kind of story, the ending is something that writers must do well to avoid being either too unsatisfactory for the viewer or too good to be true. And I'm glad to say that the ending is probably as good as the rest of the film. Part of the genius of the ending is that not only does it leave you thinking about it, but it forces you to reflect back on the entire film, which aside from adding to the mastery of the film, further helps to promote the film as a whole. One can say that the way the ending skipped over a period of time was a bit lazy in writing, and it maybe got a bit sappy, but if you think about what happens at the very end, all of that is very well justified because it was to conveys a certain message which you, the viewer, may interpret different than others (do not mistake this, though, as one of those open-endings some films do, not that that is necessarily bad but is usually done out of laziness and lacks thought and effort).

Another thing worthy of note is the cinematography and shot composition. While there were a few moments where the camera wobbled and took the viewer slightly out of the world, the rest of the film is brilliantly filmed and shot. Certain shots are held static and focused on the subject of the shot to add onto the emotion of the scene, and along with the way they are composed, whether the character is being filmed in nature or in a house, fits perfectly in this world set up by the film.

I never expected to be so immersed, so riveted, so emotionally hit by this film, but I was. I was actually nearly in tears at one point. This film will take you through an emotional roller-coaster and will leave you exhausted! I salute Thomas Vintenberg, Tobias Lindholm, and the entire cast for their excellence in this film. What a great film.

John Wick (2014)
9/10
This movie has such awesome style, such an awesome world
24 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I'd like to spend this review addressing the complaints people have put up.

1- John Wick gets knocked out by a bunch of thugs even though he's an unbelievable badass.

He has been retired for 4 years, in the same house, preoccupied by his new dog, after being waken up from sleep, in the absolute dark. Whatever level of skill you have, that's absolutely acceptable. In fact, it would've not made sense if he actually was able to stop them - then maybe those giving negative reviews would've pointed out how THAT was absurd. He even admits, after being questioned by the guy at the club saying he was "rusty", and throughout the film, we see mentions of him getting back to form, getting back to his previous life.

2- John Wick goes after them "just for a dog" OK, aside from the fact that a dog lover can get pretty attached to a dog, especially at the stage of the dog still being a helpless puppy, and aside from the fact that the act of killing that puppy to "shut him the dog up" is pretty freaken disgusting, aside from the fact that John Wick even addresses it in the film saying that this dog was the last gift from his late wife and it made him feel like he wasn't alone in the world, aside from all that, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A FREAKEN CRAZY BADASS MAFIA Hit-man/ASSASSIN. DO YOU REALLY THINK YOU CAN WALK UP TO A GUY LIKE THAT, KILL HIS DOG, AND EXPECT HIM TO JUST LEAVE IT ALONE?! Do you see the context here! I mean for God's sake! 3- John Wick never misses a shot, but when it comes to killing that son, he misses 5 shots in a row.

Would you give that a rest. Yeah, it's a stretch, but the movie would've ended right there, and honestly, I think I was too busy with the awesome action, incredible music, and sleek style of everything, things like that can easily be forgiven.

4- How has the kid of Viggo not heard of John Wick when seemingly everybody has heard of John Wick? Did you see the kid? He doesn't seem like the guy who likes to think too much of anything, and given the way his father distanced himself from him, along with the fact that the kid looks pretty young (so 4 years before, he would've not been completely aware of the exact business going on with his father) as well as how there is a WHOLE WORLD OF PEOPLE IN THIS, it seems fair.

5- Bad acting The only scene I really noticed the acting dropped was at the very end, with the admittedly cheesy "No more bullets." Is that the only thing you're referring to? If so, then bloody hell, there's a whole 90+ minutes to the film, most of which was action, so why are you even mentioning the acting as if this was some romantic drama where the acting is the main aspect of the film.

6- Bad dialogue Yeah, this I just don't get. There were some pretty nice dialogue sections, and so much of the film was world-building, I mean, how often do you see this in a film done at this level? 7- Action was just a rip-off of other films Yeah, shooting a gun is totally a rip-off. Sure. Let's go with that.

8- Lack of character development I severely have to disagree on that. Through the great world-building, we see these characters coming in and they all fit very nicely in this universe, that with that alone, you get the needed characterization. Furthermore, on John Wick himself, through his interaction with other characters, his past, his amazing skill, you get plenty of characterization, and thinking about it, what scene would you have taken out of the film to replace with 'character development'? Cuz anything added to the film and it would've felt longer than it needed to be.

9- Not much of a story here.

This movie does hit a lot of clichés in, and there isn't some big moral lesson to take home or commentary on the life of gangsters and mobsters, but really, who was walking into this expecting a great story? And for those who did, this isn't that kind of film where the story takes primary presence in the film. In my mind, there are action films that are meant for awesome stylistic action, and there are those that are meant to tell a great story told through some thrilling action here and there. Very rarely do you 'hit two birds with one stone' in these kinds of films, and the films that try that end up not being able to balance the two and ultimately fail story-wise. So it's a good thing that this film didn't try for too much of a story, because that would've detracted from what the film was actually good at. And really, the story made up for itself with the world-building.

10- HOW SO EVER CAN I TRUST IMDb AGAIN?! OH MY! Really? Really? This is the film that made you distrust IMDb ratings? REALLY?!

The Babadook (2014)
9/10
This is the most refreshing awesome classic horror that I've seen ever
20 July 2015
I will get to the slight problems I have with the movie in a second, but firstly, I've got to seriously praise this film. One of the things I really really love about this film is it does not have the incredibly stupid jump scare thing that almost all horror films have. Now that alone doesn't make a horror good. So, how did the film handle the alternative to jump scares? Absolutely amazingly. The tension was built so freaken well. We didn't get jump scares. We got a whole lot better. Whenever the Babadook appeared, we saw him in his completeness and saw him approach steadily, with every increasing intensity coupled with great sound effects (I will address the voice in a sec) and truly great acting from Essie Davis and an awesome child performance from Noah Wiseman. Seriously, the great child acting really stood out for me. Now, to get into the details, let's talk about the plot. While you can predict that the end will be that the monster will be cleared up or dead or whatever (I won't spoil what actually happens), the story really isn't about that. The monster, and how the characters develop over the story (and seriously, TALK ABOUT THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT) all come together to produce this great metaphor for depression and great study into how human behavior in cases of extreme stress and tight circumstances. And while the overall plot is 'predictable', the specific scenes are not, and all of them are set up with great tension and buildup and terror, with many moments legit taking you off guard. There are many great scenes that are stuck in my mind and to me make movie history (like the scenes with the reading of the book, the scenes when a certain character gets crazy; I won't mention more cuz you should see for yourself), and all of this makes for a great story. Now, I also mentioned the characters and performances, and boy do these aspects shine in this film. The kid is actually, while incredibly annoying at times (though, to the discerning viewer, understably so), pretty cool with how he protects himself and his mother and how he is actually a good kid and a lot deeper than the viewer might initially think. In fact, by the end of the film, you go through a steady and complete 180 on the kid, and I always love that, because it reveals that humans are a lot more complex that we give them credit for. And the mother as well, how she deals with stress and depression, how she is gradually spiraling downwards and gets more and more desperate is so well written, so well directed, I can't praise this enough. They felt real, and are leaps beyond so many of these stupid horror movie characters that the mainstream audience has gotten used to. There are no moments where you think "Why the hell is that character doing that? Why are they so stupid?" No! None of that, and that is so dang refreshing. I loved it. And is this movie scary? Hell yes. For three days afterward, I kept imagining the Babadook in my closet, or on the walls, or in the darkness where I couldn't see, which is crazy cuz all we ever see is his outline! (And just on a tangent, I love the name Babadook. It is kind of catchy and iconic and really added to the character for me :).) And while the Babadook himself is really creepy due to his creepy smile and very large brooding figure, the reason the film is scary is the great cinematography (I mean wow, I always have my gripes of how something is shot in a film, but with this, almost none) and great sound effects and audio. I've mentioned, but I defiantly mention it again. THERE ARE NO STUPID JUMP SCARES! THIS IS ACTUALLY LEGITIMATELY WELL DIRECTED! WOO!! Now, to the issues. While I loved the fact that this film completely avoided a lot of clichés, it went a little bit too far at the end in not completely showing the Babadook. I felt like while the final scenes were powerful, it would've been even better if we actually saw the Babadook and him really physically harming the characters and them being in even more peril that what they already were. Also, there are a few characters that don't really fit too well in this world that is set up. For instance, there is the friend of the mother. Now, it is actually pretty realistic that she would venture into resent of the mother with how long she has been depressed and aloof, and especially how she would resent her child, there are times when she went a bit overboard, and it kind of felt like it wasn't really her but just how the rest of the scene was. What I mean is, while everything that happens with the kid and the scene is intense, some parts of the scene are a bit exaggerated so they meet with this intensity and at times, this is over the top. There is also the kind of cliché of how the police officers won't help her, even though, at the very least, they would superficially investigate the case to satisfy such a desperate woman. However, the good far far outweighs the bad and the good is further boosted by this film being soooo refreshing from all the horror we've seen lately that I can't help but give this film a near perfect score. The score is 4.5/5, but really, it is more a 4.9/5, and this is one of my favorite horror films.

My Favorite Hero Film
19 July 2015
Captain America The Winter Soldier is not perfect film but is the perfect comic book film. If you pay attention enough you'll notice some conveniences and clichés and lapses in cinematography that are aside from it being a comic book film and could've been fixed/avoided and made the film slightly better. But boy is this film freaken awesome in almost every way. People talk about this film as an espionage type film, and it is one in many ways and it does that very very well with great tension put up throughout the film and very clever moments fitting of a good espionage film and has some great commentary on the War on Terror and the ethical conflict between Captain America and (to those familiar with Marvel Comics) the ideology of Iron Man and S.H.I.E.L.D. (not that Iron Man appears in the film, though is referenced here and there, which is cool). For me personally, I loved how Hydra in the film carry out their plan, because it makes sense and is a very smart, very clever, very despicable plan, and makes for a smart film. But it is also surprisingly a great hero film - the kind that will inspire the good side in you, especially from Captain America. Man, that guy is a hero and a true friend, and just on these points I've mentioned, this is probably my all time favorite hero film and a very refreshing approach on MCU films. Let's talk about the characters. I've mentioned Captain America as a real hero, and I say that because of the way he talks, the dialogue coming from him, the actions he does, THE AWESOME FIGHTING AND ESPIONAGE SCENES WITH THIS GUY (I MEAN WOW!), his morals and willingness to do what is right, his loyalty, the charming quirks here and there, and the way he is portrayed by Chris Evans. At this point, I can't imagine anyone else as Captain America. Chris Evans could've very easily been just some pretty boy with abs, but Chris Evans really fits the role of a hero. He has that honest face and voice needed for when Captain America speaks and acts, and he has the physique and expression for violent action that make for great actions scenes. We also have Black Widow, and while I did not see the point in some of the things she said to Captain America (like in the beginning), is actually a really great addition to Captain America, as not only is she a badass, but she also has real conflict and whenever she is not in her fun, badass mode, she actually has great emotion and realness to her, and as with Chris Evans for Captain America, Scarlett Johanson plays her really well. The thing about her character is that very easily she could've been played as this badass with nothing else going for her, and usually actresses that play those roles are not all that great. Scarlett Johanson, however, does not follow that trend, and she has some really great moments with her character, and I'm glad that she played the role of Black Widow. And not enough people are talking about how fun and great Falcon is, played by Anthony Mackie. Not only does he have really fun moments and awesome action scenes, but he makes for a true friend to Captain America, and I love that and really look forward to seeing him and Captain America more together. Now we don't really need to talk about Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury being awesome, because of course he is! All the dialogue coming out of that man's mouth is so awesome and fitting for the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and for the actor of Samuel L. Jackson. One character that kind of stole the show, though, is the Winter Soldier. Oh my word is there such depth and moral conflict and moments of greatness in action and in emotion from the character that I don't believe there has been a villain like him that I've seen in a long time. His relationship with one of the characters really really hits you right in your gut and by the end of it, THE FEELS!!! OH MY WORD!!! THE FEELS! Now, I did mention in the beginning that this is not a perfect film, and just to expand on that, there were a few moments where things were a bit convenient (like say, when Winter Soldier goes after Nick Fury but for some reason takes a slow walk to him, which allows Nick Fury to escape) or clichéd (I don't want to mention to keep this review spoiler free) or a bit too much on the side of exposition and dumbing-down for the audience (like at times, Captain America was not quick enough to follow the logic, not because the character was like that but because the film was attempting to explain to the audience), but there is no way on Earth any of that detracts from the film, and that is why I give this film a perfect score, even though it is imperfect. And for you who rolls your eyes at someone giving a perfect score to an imperfect film, just say I rounded up ;).

A Review/Rant on the Film - This is a cash-grabbing summer blockbuster that doesn't care
18 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
OK, this film has great visuals, some nice humor, fine acting, a generally logical flow of scenes, and 2 really awesome action fight scenes (one in the beginning with Arnold vs Arnold and one in the end with Arnold vs main villain). Now that, for the casual movie goer who is just trying to have a fun time and not think too much, this movie will do fine. But anyone who cares about the quality of a film, who is a fan of the Terminator franchise, my word this movie is a massive mess and will be very disappointing. To understand what this movie is, it's the type of movie that's just trying to make as much money as possible and do that by appealing to as wide of an audience as possible, even at the cost of the quality of the film. This has money-grabbing summer blockbuster written all over it: Nice visuals? Check. Overused humor? Check. Romance? Check. PG? Check. Couple of awesome action scenes? Check. Generic characters? Check. Now tell me, how many out of those things actually fit a TERMINATOR MOVIE?! Hmm... To start off, there are some serious tonal inconsistencies throughout: moments that should have been intense and gripping were having humor thrown in; moments that weren't really too serious were over dramatic. And where is this coming from? The characters. What a butcher of such awesome characters. Firstly, Sarah Connor. Why the hell is she all of a sudden this emotional lovy-dovy comical girl? WHY!? Ow right... Cuz that would appeal to a wider audience. Hmm... Sarah Connor in T2 (which the movie is primarily involving though I'll get to the T1 references in a sec) was a badass that was completely focused on one goal and that was preventing Judgement Day from ever happening. She was so engrossed in this goal that she left no space for much emotion, and all that added up to make her an interesting awesome character. In this film, she's almost the complete opposite. This is not Sarah Connor. In fact, she seems a lot like kid John Connor from T2, and THAT DOESN'T WORK AT ALL. NOT AT ALL. This is just something for the wider audience and not an interesting character and to a fan, this is an insult. Kyle. Now, look. A lot of people have been hating on Jai Courtney. While I'm not saying he is an amazing actor or anything like that, but if he is playing a good character and directed well, he'll fill the part well (like say, his role in Spartacus and Divergent). In here, Courtney is unfortunately given the role of a character that has so many moments of bad writing, so many dumb stupid moments, and so much FREAKEN ROMANCE. He also argues. A lot. Annoyingly. This guy is supposed to be someone who has fought since he was A FREAKEN KID. WHY IS HE COMICAL? WHY IS HE EMOTIONAL? WHY ISN'T HE ABSOLUTELY BADASS? CALLOUS? Hmm... Ow yeah. Because this appeals to a wider audience. Ow well... And for me, most of all, what the hell did they do to Arnold... Aside from the fight scenes (which feel more like checklisted items rather than actual badassery or seriousness), all he does is INFORM. THAT'S IT. HE IS A PLOT EXPOSITION DEVICE. WHAT THE HECK. ARE YOU SERIOUS. The point is, because all the best characters were butchered, I can't take this seriously as a Terminator film. It is in no way an addition to the franchise. What about the plot...? So convoluted and confusing and part of the reason the characters were so bad. Directing and writing for the scenes? I mean, most of the scenes were OK, but it could've very easily been done SO MUCH BETTER. For example, the beginning of the film, with Judgement Day, there was no real emotional impact on the Resistance being humanity's last hope. There was no sense of terror from the Terminators being evil. There wasn't any of that. It looked great, but very little substance. Thrown throughout the film are some moments that are either really stupid or soo convenient (like for example, how the bad Arnold was killed by a shot in the chest... Are you kidding me... That's all it took. Did anyone see T1 before writing that in? Right from that moment, all the terror and intensity from the Terminators was taken away. Sigh... What about all those memorable lines from T1 and T2? Those are delivered with skill right? Aside from the "Come with me if you want to live" by Sarah, the rest are just forced. What about the references to the previous T1 and T2 films? Well, really, they are just there so that this film can tear those movies to shreds and make them meaningless. Oh my dear lord... I could go on and on and have the film analyzed shot by shot so that I can really reveal the details, but what you need to know is that this film in every way is a cash-grabbing summer blockbuster that doesn't care much for the source material.

Great philosophical-intellectual-type sci-fi film
14 July 2015
This is one hell of a directorial debut for Alex Garland. You see, to me, sci-fis can go in one of two directions: awesome action thriller (Alien), great philosophical-intellectual type film (Interstellar, 2001: A Space Odyssey, etc.), and if a sci-fi tries to go both ways (Prometheus...), it does so at the expense of both ways and you end up with an average middle-ground, in my humble opinion. This film does the philosophical-intellectual thing really well. There are 4 things which make this film a great film: Oscar Isaac's character (very fascinating to listen to and watch; he's one of those really smart but definitely not nerdy geniuses, kind of like Tony Stark/Iron Man in a way) and Ava's character (brings a touch of humanity to the plate, ironically, as she is shown to be vulnerable but not all that she seems character), the dialogue and interactions between the characters (all of it, from the discussions on AI to aspects of life to what it means to be human, which is always a huge plus for me), the suspense towards the end and the twist, and the overall exploration of AI. The acting all around is great, the soundtrack, cinematography, and directing really set the mood very well, and the way we are shown things and how we gradually find out the explanations keeps you intrigued all through along with the great dialogue. There is a surprising amount of nudity, though, in this film, which kind of caught me off guard. There is only one slight weakness to the film, and that's Domnhall Gleeson's character. He isn't really fleshed out, and I feel like they had a missed opportunity to do that really well in the beginning, because throughout the film, you kind of just see him as this guy who's into AI, and nothing much more. What really made me notice this was because of how great Oscar Isaac and Ava were, so in that crowd, he stands out. Anyways, it's not really an issue. Just more of a missed opportunity for a perfect film.

This is so much better than people give it credit for
12 July 2015
Don't listen to the people saying it doesn't make sense or it doesn't have an ending or whatever. Look, this film isn't really for everyone, because it's slow-paced and not a lot is happening all the time, but certain things are undeniably great about this film, like the acting and the cinematography and the soundtrack and the REALISM. This film really surprised me in it that it's not at all "hollywoodized". It's purely just real. It reveals human nature in a way that not a lot of films do, as in, people are more complicated that we give them credit for, and they act certain ways for a number of reasons that we just won't know on the getgo. In the beginning of the film, you'll probably find yourself annoyed with a lot of characters, but as you learn more about them and realize that there's more to them than what you first saw, you kind of feel bad for judging them. My only small nitpicks about this film is that some scenes I wish they had long static shots of the characters, like in Shame if you ever saw that film, because it would've fit better than cutting between the faces of the people, but other than that, this is a well made film. Don't go into this film with any "pre-judgements", because it's likely not correct. All that I can say is this is not an action packed film. It's not really a thriller. It's not a fantastical plot. It's slow and steady and real.

Collateral (2004)

This is a great thriller that gets better and better as it progresses
10 July 2015
This is a pretty great thriller that gets better and better as it progresses until it reaches this ultimate level of you being immersed into it.

The best thing about this film is its awesome tension filled thriller moments. Something that really added to these scenes was that they were things that you didn't really see before or things that you didn't expect or things that you kinda expected to happen and then when it happens you're like "holy !@#$". And the reason there are scenes like that is because they really explored very well the things that could happen if you were Max and stuck in his situation, and I really love that about this film and is my favorite part of it. And from me to you, one of the scenes has got to be my one of my favorite scenes in action movie history, and it involves Tom Cruise's character Vincent and two thugs who stole his suitcase. Now that was amazing.

Another one of the great things about this film is its dialogue and discussions between the characters. Action movies usually have trouble with the transitions between action scenes, and end up putting some irrelevant filler scenes to attempt to fill the gap and it never really works well. This film had dialogue, and it is done really well, and personally, I absolutely love it when movies have great dialogue. And what I mean by that is dialogue that when you listen to it, it makes you reflect back on your life and your actions and leaves you pondering on for a while. And when the dialogue isn't that, it's developing the characters in a way that makes you attached to them, and makes you understand them, and makes them all the more believable.

I have to appreciate this film's cinematography and editing, not that it was absolutely stunning or special, but in it that there were so many moments where they could've easily gone for shaky cam or quick-cut blind cover-up editing, but it wasn't like that, and they did it well, and that is very refreshing. There were just one or two moments were I wish they'd done wider shots, but really, that's just me and my inner amateur talking and won't apply to everyone.

The performances of Jamie Fox and Tom Cruise were really good. Jamie Fox really works as this regular guy cab driver. And Tom Cruise - I didn't see him as the usual hero Tom Cruise, but instead, as this "badass sociopath" that Vincent is. I saw the character instead of the actor, which is always a great compliment for an actor playing a role. Then there's Mark Ruffalo's character. He was definitely useful in adding tension to certain scenes and added to the plot, but I felt like they either should have went all the way with his character, or toned him down more, because there are certain scenes that seemed a bit unnecessary because they weren't really relevant to the two main characters.

However, I'm definitely gonna say that there were some problems with the movie's execution. In the beginning, there's this piano music in the background and it accomplishes nothing but getting you feeling sleepy and distracting you from the great dialogue. I think it should've been completely silent and you just heard the voices of the characters. There are also times in the film where they attempt to transition between one scene and another with some song and views of the city, but they really feel out of place, and I wonder why they didn't just get straight to the point and skip the transition. I'm guessing this was done in order to cool down the audience after an intense sequence, but that's already done well with the good dialogue and the transitions just cool you down too much.

And there were two scenes that I felt could've been done a bit better, although it's probably nitpicking from me at this point. ..................SPOILER ALERT!!!...................... The scene when the police officers pull over Max and Vincent in the taxi was very interesting, but I felt that it ended kind of anti-climactically. Like I was thinking Vincent might've actually killed the police officers by something Max messed up in his improvisation and that would've been crazy good. The second scene was the ending, and though this is a really small thing, I wished that Max also died with Vincent. I feel like it would've been more impactful and realistic, given that Vincent shot through his entire set of bullets from the pistol - I'm not saying all of them should've hit, cuz he did get shot, but at least one or two. But anyways, other than that, the ending was really good and it actually touched me Vincent's last words................. SPOILER DONE .......................

Overall, really great film and I'd definitely recommend you watch it.

A Truly Beautiful Film
10 July 2015
I don't really want to break down this film into its specifics, cuz it's such a beautiful story and it really hit me and got me down to tears when I was young, and I think that's what you need to know. The film really captures the quirks and character of Hachiko, and takes you through his whole life, and it's so beautiful and emotional, I don't think you can get through this one without at least shedding a few tears, and for that, I think this film gets a full on 5 stars, even though it's not a perfect film if you'd go into the specifics. The only issues one might have with this film is the human aspect, because you aren't really too bothered with that, but it didn't and still doesn't take away from the film for me.

This film is legend.
9 July 2015
This movie is the stuff of legends. It is probably the most influential film ever made - you can find this movie referenced in some way or another in pretty much every piece of media you have - and the amazing thing is, it is pretty much just entirely dialogue with long static shots to hold the viewer's attention on the great performances of the actors/actresses and the even more captivating & clever dialogue. And what's even more amazing is that you can enjoy this and even root for the characters even though all of them are pretty bad people. Between the philosophical discussions between the characters, the great one-liners, and talks about foot massages, and I absolutely guarantee you have never/will never see a movie like this ever again. It is so refreshing, so riveting, I am glad that I watched this film. Normally, I'd break a movie down into its fundamentals, but that's really all you need to know. And ow yeah, Samuel L. Jackson man. What more could you want?

This film is so REFRESHING!
9 July 2015
To all the naysayers out there, aside from the unique execution of the film, focus on the DIALOGUE, because pretty much all of it is social commentary or thought-provoking words of some kind, and it is surprisingly deep and amazing. It took a second viewing for me to really get a good grip of the film as a whole as well as appreciate its dialogue and execution but man, this really makes one hell of an all time favorite classic! And what really hits it home for me is that THEY JUST WENT FOR IT! I mean, in everything! Not just the stunning and unique and original way they shot the film, but in the clever commentary, in the parodies, in the surprisingly real and at times hilarious dialogue, in the artsy psychology of the main character, in the crazy scenes (Michael Keaton vs Edward Norton fight, A LESBIAN KISSING SCENE), in the score (which is just drums), everything! It's the kind of film that you can't appreciate in just one or two watches, because this film really is a lot deeper in many ways, and not in the typical way art films are but in a very refreshing, more real way. And you see, this kind of film wouldn't have worked at all if everything wasn't done to near perfection (I mean, just imagine seeing the script of this along with all the ideas for how it should be executed annotated along the side - CRAZY!). The acting is unbelievably great, not just from Michael Keaton (who, btw, the film's main character is parodying - in case you are not familiar with the guy - in not only how he hasn't really been in anything since 1992, but he last played BATMAN, which is very comparable to the film's main character and Birdman), but the whole cast, all-round, and I was especially surprised by Emma Stone. I already had a good opinion of her as an actress before the film, but she raised the bar for herself! The scene where she just rants out at her father had my jaw drop to the floor, and this is a very different role for her compared to other films that she's been in, and she does it so well. Now some people talk about how they don't get the plot, and really, this isn't that kind of movie! This is a movie where the dialogue dominates, and not a twisty-turny plot. Aside from the rants of the characters that has got the film critics saying this film is social commentary and what-not, there are a lot of moments that were surprisingly hilarious. And that's really what sets this film apart from other artistic films - aside from the actual deep real things it has to say about life and fame and film, it has a great humor to it. And just like everything I already mentioned, the characters are also not so straightforward and deep. The character Edward Norton plays, while a jerk, if you listen to what he says, he actually says the truth, and it reminds me of so many of my favorite characters, like House, Sherlock Holmes, just to name the most well-known. The character of Michael Keaton, though to different degrees, really represents pretty much everyone with a dream/failed dream/past-his/her-time, and if you think through what he's going through, you can find what he's struggled through in the movie in yourself, and that just makes the film even grander for me, because that makes me reflect on my life and how I chase my dreams. I could go on and on and to the reader who has stuck to this point in my review, I wish I could just watch the movie with you next to me so that I could point out all the awesome things this movie has with it, but alas.

Prometheus (I) (2012)
4/10
It tried to be two things at once, and failed
4 July 2015
This film looks amazing. A real credit to the cinematographers and costume set designers, and it might be worth a watch just for the visuals, but that's all it really has going for it. A movie of this genre can go in either of two routes: 1) the way of "intellectual big-ideas" type films (like say 2001: A Space Odyssey or the more recent Interstellar) or 2) a sci-fi thriller that would have you at the edge of your seat (Alien). This movie was neither. It tried to be both and ended up failing because you can't have it both ways. It starts off being like the former, with steady progress, done by epic visuals and dialogue introducing certain ideas that the movie might explore (evolution vs creationalism, what it means to be human and can AI ever be human, etc.). None of that is explored at all. In fact, what is explored instead are the completely irrelevant flashbacks of the female lead and her relationship with her boyfriend... And are they interesting? No. They're annoying, especially the female lead towards the end. At times, I felt like screaming at the screen out of how stupid she acted sometimes. What about the other characters? Just as uninteresting and slightly less annoying. The pilot, played by Idris Elba, I felt was inconsistent at times (it seemed as if he was a careless jerk in the beginning and then he was a hero at the end?) and throughout the film, I kept questioning |why was he even there?" The movie attempts to answer this by him saying "I just fly the ship." That's lazy writing. The biologist who could've been a way of exploring the ideas of evolution vs creationalism and "what it means to be human?" was wasted. Charlize Theron's character was consistent, but not in any way that helped the film, and you were supposed to hate her, but really, it didn't mean anything, cuz that isn't utilized at all. The only redeeming and entertainingly interesting character was the android played by Michael Fosbender, and on many occasions, he was the voice of logic from the audience to the other characters, because so often they acted like idiots. This is, however, not to discredit the actors, because they did a good job with what they were given. What about the other route - the way of the thriller? *Sigh. The humanoid alien looked awesome, and I really wish they had made use of him, but alas. And on the director's side, why on Earth would have have the thrilling part of the movie all the way at the end, when most people would've fallen asleep? Ow yeah, because you also tried to be a philosophical sci-fi at the same time. There are about a total of 5-10 minutes of thrill in the entire film and that's it. and when it is there, for some reason, it is filmed badly. There was probably a completely different cinematographer and camera man for the action scenes, because they were no where near as good as the rest of the films look. All in all, by the end of the film, you end up questioning why did you watch this, because it feels like there was no point to it. It didn't stimulate your mind with exploration of ideas, and it leaves you very underwhelmed in action.

Good Kill (2014)
8/10
A deep film that is more of a thinking movie than an entertaining one
7 April 2015
This is a, at least in my opinion, a realistic portrayal of the inner conflict of UAV "pilot" and has very real characters with very real moral conflicts, and to me, that's a very interesting setup and my kind of movie. I don't think this'll be everyone's movie though. There's no epic awesome action sequence or extremely tense moments (there is a couple of moments that are more intense than the overall feel of the movie but not super intense). The main thing this movie has going for it is the deep gray-area type of moral conflict that the characters (not just the main character) face and it makes you think about them. Towards the end however, there is a very satisfactory feel that made you feel good and "all is just in the world" and that's a big plus for a movie like this, because a lot of these types of movie end in somewhat of an empty way. Now, as stated, because this isn't a entertainment kind of movie, there are going to be people saying that the characters were boring and monotonous, etc., but really, that's what fit the movie setup, and that's what is realistic. It's definitely not for everyone, but it was my type of film and I enjoyed it and plan to rewatch it to rethink through the moral conflicts in the movie.

Keith (I) (2008)
6/10
Pleasantly surprised that this was a touching movie.
4 April 2015
I did not expect much from the movie because I thought singers as actors would typically not be great. Then I was, from the very beginning, completely proved wrong. First off, Keith, the character, played by Jesse McCartney, was really interesting. You didn't really know what to expect from him and you feel there's a real story behind him - because there is - and for most of the movie, he was the only character I cared about. Natalie, along with her friends, were one of those people you hear about in school that had all the drama and had this and that going for them and seemed to be on a different level that you didn't really care for at all (unless you were on of them). However, the whole story revolves around Natalie changing through the story as she interacts with Keith, and those interactions, btw, were very fun and interesting to see happening, and by the time the end rolls around, you begin to care for her too. There are also important themes in the story and what I believe are quotable dialogues here and there. Overall, nice movie to see if you are in the mood for a drama.

This is such a fun series to watch!
2 April 2015
OK, first off, the main character, Live (Rose McIver), is such a character you can't help but root for and love. The dynamic between her and the other characters is always really fun to watch. The dialogue is also so clever! And the references! I just love it! And personally, when I saw Aly, my childhood went nuts because I remember her so well from Future, so that just added to everything for me personally. And then, her being a zombie and what comes with that... It's so awesome! I can't speak about it without spoiling things, but just to finish it off, really fun and interesting series, and I am seriously getting the vibe that this might be here for the long run.

All-Star Superman (2011 Video)
9/10
Best Superman movie ever. Seriously.
31 March 2015
I have to say this is the best Superman portrayal I've ever seen and a very emotional one too. Really. I was left speechless at the end. This is how Superman is and should be. Towards the end, I was getting emotional. Just for that alone, I'm giving it a 5 out of 5. Now, some may complain that there were too many characters, but THAT'S HOW IT SHOULD BE! Were there beings like this in the world, that's probably how things would go. Also a really great portrayal of Superman as Clark Kent, and fun to see how he switches between the two in some scenes. The animation is well, done, though at times, I felt like the detail was a bit off, and if we were really to hit it home, the animation might've had more of an impact, but that's not taking away anything from the movie for me. Voices were also really well done, especially Superman's, because it makes him seem a lot more like a hero with the gentle, calm voice, and Luthor a vain intelligent evil man (as well as other characters who the read should find out for himself). The dialogue is EXCELLENTLY done! Very smart dialogue. Very characteristic of the character saying the dialogue. Absolutely great. The interaction between Superman and Lex Luthor when they did happen were also really well done and intriguing. Part of the emotional impact this movie had was the real feeling of heroism you felt from Superman - like I said, how Superman should be. And of course, the ending, which had so many things to it that were emotional, from pretty much every single character in the movie (like seriously! even one of the robots!) So yeah, definite 5/5 from me and the best Superman movie I've ever seen so far.

DC Showcase: Jonah Hex (2010 Video)
10/10
Really great short film overall.
30 March 2015
I do not know anything about Jonah Hex at all, so this was more like a cowboy animated short film to me, and I have to say, it was really great! First off, the voice of Jonah Hex, dayum! Straight away makes him very intriguing and it's very appropriate for the character and his overall look. The way the dialogue is set up and the way the character of Jonah Hex is characterized is done brilliantly I feel. And more on the dialogue, when Hex does speak, it's always really wow and badass and awesome. The action was pretty good too and the characters other than Hex were just as well done as Hex himself. I give it a 10 because I had a really good time and this is a very memorable short for me. I also feel like this should get it's own short animated series (like 13 or so episodes) because I feel like there's a lot that can be done here.

OK, so this is the film... Choppy then Great
30 March 2015
OK, so this is the film. The first half or so is very choppy, going from this to that in an instant and you're just like "Wait, what?" and I feel like they could've done a lot better with the introduction of one of the characters (because the character comes off as bratty and annoying even though the character isn't). There was also a big action sequence that I felt made very little sense (keep Superman: Doomsday in mind and you'll get what I mean). The second half is a lot better, especially towards the end. In fact, if they removed pretty much all of the first half, the second half would have been a really great film at about 8 or even a 9 out of 10. Batman and Superman are portrayed pretty good, and you'll enjoy when they are on screen. The animation is good, but I feel like there were missed opportunities here and there, like certain angles and ways they could've done things that would've had more of an impact emotionally. Overall, I'd say a 6/10.

On par with Lion King for me
24 March 2015
Ow man, this is such a beautiful movie. I have watched this movie so many times, and every single time, it hits me like that first. The combination of the Bryan Adams soundtrack with the beautiful amazing animation, this film will no doubt bring the out hidden emotion in you. You'll feel free, heartbroken, tense, magnificent. I don't believe that there are any Western animations that are quite like this, and in fact, I don't believe there are any animations at all that are quite like this. This is definitely NOT JUST FOR KIDS! I can't believe the amount of people saying that. Trust me, just give yourself the first 5 minutes alone and you'll know what I'm talking about.
