The Snowman (1982)
Beautiful, bittersweet childhood experience
11 out of 10 for my most beautiful and bittersweet Christmas story. I still have the original VHS. The drawing is mesmerizing and mystical, the atmosphere is absolutely magical. The Snowman is capable of recognizing our inner child and to heal it, to heal with it. I remember when I was a kid and watched it, it made such an impact, but I could only realize that years later. Now I rediscovered it again and recognized it's beautiful, sophisticated aspects and the impact it made in my life. It truly reflects some of the worst and best memories I had, every time I watch it, I am reminded about them. Keep yourself happy and keep your loved ones close and watch The Snowman, you won't find a more captivating short Christmas story.
Californication (2007)
Accidentally bumped into one of the best shows in living history.
So I'd been a Mulder fan for years, I loved (still love) the X-Files. And then this show came into my life and I am amazed. Still haven't through with the most of it, I am around the middle of Season 3. This show has been one of the best things that has ever happened to television. The acting is awesome, the dramaturgy is stellar, the characters are loveable, and though on the surface it is sex, drugs and rock and roll with lots of fun, it cuts deep and leaves us thinking about how well are doing in our actual lives, whether we are the frivolous or the emotional Hank Moodys of the world. The dialogs in the show, the witty reposts, the tension that is almost always gets resolved in one way or another, the heartfelt story of the main protagonist, who is incapable of settling down, struggling with his own demons, hurting and loving the people he most loves as they are trying to live their lives to the fullest in their own way, still in a way depending on him; how that is put into film leaves something special in the spectator, and that special something is the reason why we need films and art in general.
The Vietnam War (2017)
Unbelieavable quality and details
This documentary is simply among the best that have ever been or will be released.
The multiple points of view, the very sensible, humane approach, the details, the narrator's voice, the emotional rollercoaster that allows you to emphasize with all the sides/people without prejudice, sometimes the sheer brutality, the participants...it left me speechless first but I always want to watch it since. I would screen this in highschools.
It is just overwhelmingly clever, detailed, structured, and also full of heart.
Nothing more to say to give it the kind of justice it deserves. Just watch it, you won't regret it, I promise.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)
More movies like this, please!
Exciting, humorous, an excellent cast that keeps your eyes on the screen - this is what a great movie should be about. The kind of movie which you rewind not for it's special effects, but because of it's dramaturgy, tension and interactions. Not to mention, it tells much about the historical aspects of a country which cannot be well undertood without all these historical/sociological references. Absolutely brilliant, a surprisingly well made quality movie. More like this, please!
Yip Man 4 (2019)
Nice and great ending to the saga (is it the end?)
A great ending to the 4 piece Donnie Yen saga of Ip Man (though there might be a 5th, not decided yet as far as I am concerned.) We see some personal aspects, great moments, and lots of martial arts. I personally really appreciate that in this part, Xing Yi and Tai Chi are demonstrated as functional martial arts. These arts are often so underrated by people who know nothing about them. I admire them and practice them, and they were really well presented, distinguishable. Of course we don't get to see the best acting moments in movie history in this piece, but personally I ended it with a smile, been having enough action and a fair amount of story too. I recommend it to you if you wouldn't expect a Fellini movie but a not too serious, more or less biographical piece, especially for seekers of martial arts. Either way you'll be satisfied if you don't take it too seriously-neither yourself.
About Time (2013)
Just lovely
This movie is lovely and very bitter for me as I couldn't do the trick in it so my Mary raises her two kids with the other bloke. The one significant detail, the one eventually Tim lefts behind at the end is the solution to happiness.
Although happiness can be found in many ways of course as this is shown in the movie too. Bill Nighy is the total winner again with his fantastic humour and humanity. But the rest is beautiful as well. I think it's enough. Watch it. Be happy either you could do the cupboard trick or not. I dare you.
Into the West (2005)
Best movie about native Americans
This is the most profound, complete and heartfelt movie series to show that piece of American history when the West was taken. The characters are loveable, humane, beautifully portrayed. You have to experience it first hand and after you won't look for other content about that topic as this is the best ever. Thisnmovie has more to offer of course, it provides you with the moral background todeal with what you see andbit teaches love and respect to our fellow human beings. You cannot ask much more.
Das fliegende Klassenzimmer (1954)
Childhood favourite found after 23 years
So I was searching something on Youtubeland and it was recommended to me randomly, Hungarian dubbed version, my native language. I thought I lost this movie forever as I never found it ever, we had it on vhs but it was gone years ago. So never seen it in German, but Hungarian sync actors were really nice at the time. So now I relive my old feelings, the book is one of my all-time favourites and I saw this wintertime at my grandmother's flat twenty+ years ago. It is still fantastic and endured during the years. The atmosphere, the human(e) emotions, the message is clear, it is one of the best guides to children about social / moral values, it helped me for sure, I think it is Kästner's absolute top 1. Some way I'll get it to show it to my children one day. One of th best heartwarming and heartfelt stories I have ever known so far. Please watch it and bring more humanity to the world!
Chernobyl (2019)
Masterpiece
A Hungarian here, I was born in 1984. And I have to say, this series is maybe the biggest surprise so far. A captivating masterpiece. I have some memories from those times and the series gives them back accurately. It is stellar in every aspect, the environment, the Soviet atmosphere, my God, they could recreate those strict, Soviet faces which we have not seen for some time now which is maybe a bigger deal than the equipment... I don't know how, but the creators of this show could sense the morphogenetic field of those times. Also Jared Harris, Emily Watson, Stellan Skarsgård are fantastic. I read some news about Russia and the show now, and I must say I am pretty much grieved by that. They want to recreate the show with a plot twist: the CIA sabotaged the reactor. Well...2 consequences can be drawn: 1, the show is stellar and the truth is so much out that it could terrify those who still want to conceal this story, and 2, it means not much have changed in Russia since 1986 which is the most scary aspect. Their endeavors to recreate the show in their political favour demonstrates that what the show states about the USSR is still valid to modern day Russia. We Hungarians didn't know about Chernobyl for about at least 10 days and many celebrated the 1st of May as if nothing happened. Also in Belarus and in the Ukraine many people didn't know until it was too late and tens, maybe hundreds of thousands got ill. They should accept this guilt of their predecessors instead of denying their part in it. The series gives maxinum respect to the heroes, the firefighters, the liquidators, they should be happy that the whole world finally knows how brave these people were. I salute to them.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
Yet another beautiful tale
J.K. Rowling knows what is going on in our world and what people really need these days. Exactly this is portrayed in this movie. You can read all the reviews of it; in fact this is my second review here, in response to a very negative one regarding the movie. If there are no character developments here, then there are neither in the Potter movies. I don't want to raise spoilers but I assure you this movie is - if not anything else, lovely. It touches your heart if you have ever felt anything shown in it. In an honest, innocent way, the way you do not learn at school, the way you can only grasp by experience or from a storyteller who knows how these emotions really work. It is not a Harry Potter movie and it should not be treated as such. It is the first part of a different story line in the same world. Of course it is not as profound but we still have four movies to go. But this movie's path is paved with the same principles as what we see in the Potter movies, it shows us moral and consequence. Also how to treat each other and everyone and everything else around us: with respect and love. We are in dire need for such stories. I have high hopes for the sequels which will along with this one - I really hope, show the qualities above for generations to come.
