Breaking Bad (2008)
Breaking Bad - Series review - a great piece of art.
I can easily say that, Breaking Bad is one of the best TV series I have ever seen. Set in Albuquerque, the series follows the life of a high school chemistry teacher, Walter White (brilliantly played by Bryan Cranston), who was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the beginning of the first series.
Breaking Bad tracked Walt's transformation from a decent, excellent high school teacher to criminal mastermind and the transition of his character. The mild-mannered high school chemistry teacher Mr. White comes to that point where he thinks that life can't get any worse. Learning that he has terminal cancer, and realising that his illness probably will ruin his family financially, Walt becomes desperate to secure his family's future before he dies, turning to a life of crime, making/cooking and selling methamphetamine, as a result, he ruined his own family and the lives of several others in the process. However, in the tensioned final half hour, somehow he won back a measure of both sympathy and respect - not least by surrendering the pretence that he's done it all for his family. At last Walt told Skyler: "I did it for me," "I liked it. I was good at it." "I was ALIVE!"
One way or another, Heisenberg ticked off every item on his unfinished business list, while the scenes slipped by at their customary stately pace, wasting his enemies, settling a score with his old rivals, freed his protégé, apologised to his wife and ensuring that his children would - someday - get the drug money he believes they deserve.
The series delivered everything that has been great about Breaking Bad: tension, emotion, pathos, brutality, humour, jaw-dropping shocks – and last, but not least: resolution.
Jesse Pinkman's character, intensely played by Aaron Paul, giving a memorable performance in the show and building a natural chemistry with the lead character, Mr. White – and exceptional play of an Exceptional actor: Bryan Cranston.
Beautifully written by Vince Gilligan, carefully directed by a great team, with plot twists coming in refreshing ways, brilliant acting, absolutely great cast – couldn't get any better.
Breaking Bad might not be perfect, but is definitely a great piece of art.
NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service (2003)
NCIS Review - Series 1-9
Created by Donald P. Bellisario - which served in the United States Marine Corps and was awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, and Don McGill, a well known writer and producer, directed by a strong team of directors such as: Dennis Smith, Thomas J. Wright, Terrence O'Hara, (etc) and produced by Belisarius Productions in association with Paramount Network Television, CBS Paramount Network Television, CBS Television Studios and Thinkfilm (for Washington DC scenes), the TV show is about the operations of an elite team of special agents working a series of cases of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service's Washington DC.
Watching the NCIS series since the beginning, I find that the cast is very carefully selected to its very best, with believable characters and wonderful plots, one of the best shows on television, so is understandable why it has been on the air for so long. Kate and Ziva's characters were both very exciting and kept the chemistry going between Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) and them, and brought a little spice to the show.
With a bit of an attitude and working under Gibbs, the "Very" Special Agent Anthony - Tony - DiNozzo (brilliantly played by Michael Weatherly), a former homicide detective who has his instincts that can only be achieved by working on the streets.
Special Agent Caitlin - Kate - Todd (Sasha Alexander), a former United States Secret Service agent on Air-Force One, hired by Gibbs and NCIS on her "departure" from Air-Force One and later was murdered in the line of duty by Ari Haswari (Rudolf Martin), a Mossad officer, half-brother of the liaison officer with NCIS, Ziva David.
Field agent Ziva David (the brilliant play of glamorous Cote de Pablo), took Kate's place in the NCIS team, a former Mossad officer who is a skilled fighter, helpful past experience as a spy, a multilingual asset of the team (speaks at least 9 different languages), the daughter of the Assistant Director of Mossad, later promoted to the Director of Mossad.
The NCIS team gets a new director, Jenny Shepard (play by Lauren Holly). After Holly's departure at the end of Season 5, the NCIS gets a new director, role taken over by Leon Vance (played with excellence by Rocky Carroll).
Field agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray), the son of an Admiral in the U. S. Navy, is a computer-geek agent starting as the junior field agent of the team (Probie) and working his way up to a Special Field Agent position.
Being all assisted by the great and funny scientist Abby Sciuto (great performance of Pauley Perrette all the way), the only member of the team that Gibbs actually shows affection for, and sweet Dr. Donald Mallard (David McCallum), nicknamed Ducky, an old fashioned, eccentric Scottish medical examiner and all coordinated by the team leader, special agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon), a former Marine, becoming a tough investigator and a highly skilled interrogator, smart, tough and willing to bend the rules to get the job done, mentored by his predecessor, Mike Franks (played by Muse Watson).
Because in the UK the series are far behind (we are waiting for season 10 to start in February), I can't imagine the show without Ziva, but I believe it's not NCIS without her, and I think that is the reason why ratings have dropped.
I LOVE this show!... Will get back with more comments for the newest seasons.
Center Stage: Turn It Up (2008)
Center Stage: Turn It Up (2008) - Film Review - could be better
Directed by Steven Jacobson, ''Center Stage - Turn It Up'' tracks a small group of students at the fictitious American Ballet Academy, with plenty of appeal and energy-filled film about following and reaching for your dreams, this story is as much about passion as it is about ballet and hip hop.
All Kate Parker has ever wanted to do was perform with the American Ballet Academy. Kate (played by Rachele Brooke Smith), a girl from Detroit with fire, passion, attitude and a blinding-white smile, and Tommy (played by Kenny Wormald) have a natural chemistry between the two characters and their dance moves were really hot. Despite the fact that she has something special, Kate learns the hard way that it takes more than just natural talent to succeed in the dance world. Suzanne Von Stroh (Sarah Jayne Jensen), a smooth ballerina whose father just happens to be a major donor, is chosen instead.
Not very sexual or too intriguing, the dancing and the choreography are inspiring, the movie - however - does have its faults - as for instance some technicalities - but it is definitely enjoyable as this is a story that involves dance and romance, jealousy, misunderstanding and the fire that ignites the passion. They may not get any Oscar nominations for their performances, but they did a good job with the movie, especially for teens. The film is easy on the eye as we watch beautiful bodies rhythmically and elegantly contort in the rehearsal room and on the stage.
But yet again, the movie is all about dancing. Hip-hop, street dance, it's the music that thrills and is a sequel to the teen-targeted dance romance.
Not as good as the original movie, but I would still give it 8 out of 10.
Die Hard (1988)
Die Hard (1988), film review
It's Christmas time in L.A...
John McClane (Bruce Willis), as the New York cop, visiting his estranged wife Holly, who takes on ruthless terrorists and give them a hard time as they hold hostages during a Christmas party in an LA office building. Pure action, realistic (the hero and characters are human and can get hurt), very impressive - realistic yet again - pyrotechnics and special effects, is what the modern action film should be.
Played by Alan Rickman, "Hans Gruber" is a cold and calculated criminal, with a layer of dark humour without going over the top, the epitome of movie leading terrorist.
I see "DIE HARD" (1988), directed by John McTiernan; starring Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman and Bonnie Bedelia as a classic action film.
