The Oval (2019– )
2/10
Tyler, Let Others Direct & Write for a Change.
8 February 2022
I found The Oval very frustrating to watch -- though I continued to watch because the story line was exciting. I wanted to know what was going to happen next. My problem was with the dialogue. Characters took too long to deliver their lines and often repeated themselves more than twice. This writing style made each character seem to be indecisive or stupid. And, this tactic prolonged a situation much longer than necessary. I found myself using the fast-forward button too often - and to my amazement, I never lost the story line because of it. This tactic is used oftentimes through-out Tyler Perry's movies and TV series. Very frustrating. Also, Tyler Perry's male characters all have the same character flaw: They all make bad decisions. His female characters are much smarter. This is also noted through-out Mr. Perry's movies and TV series. Mr. Perry seems "stuck" to these characteristics . Another reviewer characterizes these tendency as formulaic, shallow and dumb. Perhaps he should let someone else give writing and directing a shot.

Can't Follow
11 November 2021
Too much cursing....too much use of ebonics... I don't know what they are talking about. Turned on close caption, but that didn't help. Too difficult to follow. And, too dark. Not enough lighting. Story line seems hopeless for all characters involved. Every week dark, hopeless situations.

Kanan Lives Up To Early Comments
24 September 2021
Well, Kanan lives up comments made back in July when series started. He is not the smart kid Raq wants him to be...at least he's not street smart. He should have gone to Stuyvesant where his true talent could have been discovered. Kanans inability to follow instructions is going to get his mother in a lot of trouble. He has messed up too many times.

In original Power, Kanan was not a gifted intellect eligible to attend New York's Stuyvesant High
19 July 2021
So, this series is supposed to be about a smart kid named Kanan? Kanan was always portrayed as a terrifying, vicious, vindictive, childishly emotional man whose only aim in life was to get even with James St. Patrick. James was the brilliant, strategic, businessman who built an empire... Kanan was too short sighted to successfully build anything...and he was hardly smart enough to run the action on the streets. Kanan started to show a little humanity at the end of the original Power series. Power Book 3 is about a made up character invented for this show...not the Kanan character they introduced us to in the original Power series. Having said this, it was a good start and I look forward to the next episode.

Excellent News Review!
31 January 2021
Jonathan is host to a very informative news review. The most relevant personalities in the news have made themselves available to Jonathan. The flow and organization is smooth. His questions are to the point. I enjoy The Sunday Show and I'm taping it so that I may attend church and still see the show. Congratulations Jonathan!

She's Not Yet Used to the Time Lag?
30 January 2021
Tiffany is not likeable...and, although she seems to be trying to hold her tongue and let her guests speak, she too often out-talks her guests. Her questions are too long. Perhaps its the time lag that is interfering? I also agree that her voice is annoying. I like the segment where she explains terms and procedures. But note, those segments only feature Tiffany...no guests involved.

It's Happening..Like it or not!
29 September 2020
I did not think Tasha, Tariq, nor Saxe were strong or likable enough to carry their own series...but who cares what I think. It's happening. The least they could do is tell the story. Last episode had four sex scenes (distractions) which did not advance the story. I'm curious to see if the fact that Dru is gay will lend to the story. I'm hoping they do not plan to have Tariq engaging in sex on the show...nothing sexy or appealing about that kid. All in all, the story is Ok. They need to tell it without too many distractions.

Power Decisions Were Personal, Rather than Creative
10 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the After Show. I was hoping to get an understanding as to why the three -- (Tasha, Tariq and Sachs) most undeserving and disliked characters survived to have their own spin off show?? I observed a lot of love, emotions and even confusion among the writer, director and actors. I hope I'm wrong, but it seemed as though Tasha survived because Courtney empathized with the way Tasha was treated throughout. Courtney and the writers portrayed Tasha to be selfish and naive and disloyal to her man...before Ghost was unfaithful to her. Tasha slept with, and manipulated men for her own purposes. She used her friends. She had no moral compus and could not support her son when he needed her most. The viewers never really related to Tasha's story and never developed a sense of support for Tasha. The same for Tariq. From feedback I've read, viewers did not like the Tariq character, and could not root for him to win. IMO, the audience never developed the love and emotion that the cast and staff had for these two characters. I was not surprised that Tariq shot Ghost. I wish that Kanan was not brought back -- IMO, that was ridiculous. In addition, Sachs got his job back. Why? He was another unlikable character. I would have preferred a more thoughtful, realistic, and creative ending.

On the other hand, as terrible as Ghost and Tommy were, the audience wanted to see them win. Sort of like the Dexter series. Dexter was renewed 8 times because fans developed an affection for a serial killer.

Why is Tate the winner?
30 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Councilman Tate worked very hard to get Ghost out of his way. He makes arrangements to give evidence to the FBI. He pays Dre $100,000 to kill Ghost. He tells Tasha that Ghost is going to betray Tariq and urges her to stop Ghost in some way. He hires the Father/Son assassination team to kill Ghost...Tommy and Ghost should have been the winners. Ghost struggles for six seasons to win...The love between these two brothers has certainly been tested and it should've counted for something at the end....why couldn't they win? Put Tariq in reform school or jail for shooting his father and for his other crimes...or, nail Tasha or Sachs for their crimes. Tate is a great actor, but he's a minor character and a late comer. This was not his show!! I don't know how this series will finally end, but as it stands now, I'm not satisfied. Everyone's ending is sad (including Tommy's) ... So far, the only winner is Tate!?! Dissappointed!

New Themes Added, Some Remain the Same, Some Themes Abandoned
27 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I've read almost all of the books (I did not read The Fiery Cross). In my opinion, the writers did a great job of adapting the books to TV. New story lines have been introduced that will prolong the life of the series. Favorite characters have survived and their circumstances suggest very interesting situations. Im looking forward to seeing more of Jocasta and Murtagh. In the books Jocasta had an affair with her slave, Ulysses. Murtagh died at Colladen. John Grey is a favorite and I look forward to his story and his son, William. A lot of this episode was close to the book. Ian has been traded. Roger returns to Brianna. Brianna gets to confront Bonnet. Roger gets to inflict pain on Jamie as payback. The stone Claire found actually saves them in the book. In this story, the stone almost gets them killed. The writers kept some things, abandoned some things, and added others. Most importantly, they tied up all loose ends. I'm looking forward to the new season.

Great adaptation, but not from the Books!
21 January 2019
I have criticized the storyline of some episodes in the past; however, this story was brilliant. The books are wordy and I imagine very difficult to trim down and still advance the story for TV. Although most of this story did not happen in the books, this episode showcased the acting of every character... Brianna, Steven Bonnet, John Grey, Fergus, Roger, the Priest and the Mohawk Indians were all fantastic. This episode was a real tear jerker. I enjoyed every part of it. I hope Roger is finally rescued...I didn't like his story nor did I care for his story in the books either... and I hope we don't lose any characters in the season finale.

When Will Roger's Torture End?
13 January 2019
I don't understand why we are still watching Roger suffer. I realize his capture goes on for what seems like 100 pages in the books, but its not very entertaining to watch on TV. I'm so glad to see John Gray...It was a good episode. Jocasta's party was amusing. For God's sake, please save Roger!

Oh No Bree, He is Your Father! Unacceptable!
7 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First I must say this was a great episode. However, Brianna spoiled it for me. Just as in the books, Brianna shows herself to be a disrespectful brat. If Brianna does not like what you have to say, you'd better duck cause she's gonna start swinging. She has every right to be angry, but she does not have the right to slap and punch her family...people who love her and put her best interests first. If Brianna was not such a child , she would have been able to understand HER role in this mess...and Lizzie's mistake because Lizzie did not have the right information. And when did Claire start keeping secrets from Jaimie?....Oh yes. When her bratty daughter arrived. It's hard to like the character 'Brianna' in the series. She was not likeable in the books either. Unfortunately, Brianna's personality does not improve. Claire and Frank spoiled her rotten.

Oh Bree ... !
6 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The episode was very well done. Considering the wordy books they had to glean the story from. I was delighted to see the reunions between Jamie, Claire and Bree. Bree has an annoying way of not telling the whole story. Her decisions to withhold info causes a lot of bad decisions to be made. She broke up with Roger because he made a decision to keep info from her...and she possesses that same arrogance. Its almost like telling a lie when she allows someone to draw their own conclusion from the scant info she shares. Bree makes the decision as to what is in the best interest of all. She causes a lot of pain and suffering...especially for Roger. And (in the books) Bree causes a rift between Claire and Jaimie by not being forthcoming.

Jamie's son was not born 20 years ago!
22 December 2018
Jamie's son is still a boy because he was born about 8 to12 years ago in the story. He was not born immediately after Claire went back through the stones -- 20 years ago in the story. Remember Jamie spent 7 years living in a cave at Lollybroch, he spent time in prison and he spent time as a groomsman at Hellswater while Claire was back in her time becoming a doctor. All this occured before he impregnated little Willie's mother. I don't know how old the boy is supposed to be, but I expect him to be quite young when Claire returns.

Oh Brianna!
20 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't like Briana in the books and I feel the same about her character in the series. In the books she continues to get more unreasonable and disrespectful. Brianna becomes the typical "millennial" of the 18th century. Poor Roger. On the other hand, I love the way the story is progressing. Important scenes are included that will mean a lot later on....even though the sequences do not follow the books.

The development of characters and plot was interrupted too many times. Looks like it will be an exciting series. I will give a chance.

Love This Show!
23 February 2017
I'm not one to write reviews, but after reading some of the reviews submitted, I just wanted something positive said about this show. It's a great operetta. I love the music and dance routines. I think Queen Latifah is amazing. The three girls are excellent.

I also like the story-line. The actors are doing a great job. This is better than Empire. Better music, better character development, better pacing. I'm interested in these women...all of them: Carlotta, Cotton, the three divas. I look forward to each episode.

I think Lee Daniels and crew have done an excellent job.
