Secretary (2002)
masterpiece
I used to hate Willem Dafoe. It's easy with movies like Wild at Heart, but Last Temptation of Christ? Hated him as Jesus, too. Then he played a drug dealer in Light Sleeper and all of I sudden I don't hate him anymore.
Then comes Kevin Bacon. Is it me or does he always play slime balls? Recently I saw him in The Woodsman, where he plays a convicted child molester. He shows so much heart it was impossible for me to not love his character.
Finally, James Spader. All three of these guys are fine actors. The word professional fits them well. But I hate him. In this movie he plays a sadist. I've given up looking up psychiatric terms on wikipedia, so let's just add that he's a bit nuts. There's a scene near the end where he says to himself: "Lee, I'm very fond of you as well." It took that scene to remind me that I'm only hating his characters. Great job, Jimmy.
Speaking of great jobs......ladies and gentlemen, Maggie Gyllenhaal. She is smoking, scorching, scalding hot in this movie and deserved every one of the awards she got for this performance.
The director. Someone has to get the credit for this masterpiece, and he's the man. 10/10
Gerry (2002)
only for the patient
coming soon to a theater near you...."Open Water 2" starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck. At least this time they won't get thirsty! Maybe this time they'll bring some salty pretzels for the trip.
I have a friend whose wife was in a car accident a few years back and all three of their children died. Within a year she was pregnant again and I told him how much I appreciated that he didn't give up and kept moving forward.
Matt Damon made one real mistake. Never, never, never give up hope. Of course he can be forgiven in this instance since he was most likely in a state of delirium. He knows he has to live with that mistake.
I have no problem enjoying and recommending a movie like this. Just be aware that this is the slowest-paced movie I can recall seeing.
