Cold Mountain (2003)
Beautiful film
A romanticized civil war film with a fantastic cast and a heartfelt story. The length of the film might run a little long for some, but I enjoyed all of it. The scenery was stunning and it has turned out to be one of my most favorite films. I absolutely adore Renee Zellweger in this film and find it chillingly haunting. A sadly beautiful ending, this movie will stay with me for a very long time. The length of the film might run a little long for some, but I enjoyed all of it. Why was this not nominated for 2003 Best Picture? Obviously The Return of the King was superior than any other film during that year, but Cold Mountain is definitely a better film than both Master and Commander, and Seabiscuit, which were both Best Picture nominees. This truly is a great film. I recommend it!
Paper Planes (2014)
An OK film
I found this film to be enjoyable but again lacked polish as a lot of Australian Films tend to do. There is nothing Hollywood about this film. It skips through its plot just fine but it is a bit folksy and heavy handed. It has some nice themes which are quite uplifting. The film is a bit nothingness. Sam Worthington's performance lacks depth as usual and I find it interesting that he didn't even bother to turn up to his own Premiere of the film. Overall an "Ok" film with a nice story but have kind of seen it all before. Perhaps this would have been better released on DVD. With a theatrical release I kind of expected something more.
Dinosaur Island (2014)
Cute kids film
I have seen this film and I think it should be noted that this is a children's film, like Walking with Dinosaurs I think audience goers assume that all films with Dinosaurs in them apply to the adult genre as well. It is fantastical, wondrous and has a really enjoyable ending which makes up for some slight loose storytelling. It is very pretty to look at and some of the locations are absolutely beautiful. I really enjoyed this film. It was light hearted, it wasn't long (86mins) and is true to its family genre. I really enjoyed Walking with Dinosaurs also and the critics trashed that film. I think it is a case of managing your expectations. This is not an adult film, it is for small children and should be viewed as such. 8 stars for me – it does what it claims to do, it is simple and enjoyable entertainment with a very sweet story.
