My Girlfriend's Boyfriend (2010)
Uh, no. Missed the boat - or should I say plane?
While I like the premise (which wasn't revealed until the end) of a fictional love story paralleling the "real" love story happening, in the end, the "story romance" if you pull it apart from the writer's story and take it on its own merits it's dull and not so inspiring that the author finally gets published, it doesn't work. The fake love story is boring -- girl meets handsome guy, who is a rich ad exec, and she inspires him for a campaign with some random sentence and she decides to follow him to his new position that she inspired....it's total drivel. Like who cares? The big reveal at the end of the thing she can't bring herself to tell the guy is that she can't have children and that's why she doesn't want to burden him by marrying him. I guessed that plot point in the first 15 minutes and it's just dumb -- adopting, surrogates, etc. being available. Anyway, I think they missed the plane in the end -- if you do watch it this will sort of make sense.
Doctor Foster (2015)
Strangely riveting -- and just plain strange
It was more Doctor Strange Love than Dr. Foster to me. The proverbial train wreck that I couldn't stop watching. The characters were so inconsistent in their behaviors that I ended up disliking all of them - - but I kept watching. I think it's that they were all so supremely selfish that there wasn't much to redeem any single one of them. The husband was a selfish git, the kid was an annoying brat, the doctor was a morally-deficient arse, the "friend" was the worst friend ever, the young girlfriend was vacuous, and the neighbors and "friends" were all totally fine with infidelity and blackmail. I hope my real neighbors are nothing like these! The doctor seemed clueless a third of the time, sweet and kind a third of the time, and a complete psycho the other third. The neatly-wrapped-up ending seemed to indicate we were to conclude she was sweet and kind after all -- it would have been more appropriate for her to still show some of that psycho-under-the-surface personality she had waiting to surface once again. Ah well.
