This movie could be great, or at least good, but it gets lost in endless dialogues that pretend that they are deep, but they are just surface level and benign to the point of it being extremely irrittating. At the same time the movie doesn't go far enough to it really achieve it's goal of being a satire, everything stays on a maybe extreme, but still somewhat realistic level that just leaves you empty handed as a viewer, because what was the goal here? To show the media is bad? How, eh, original?
Also Gyllenhalls character is just not believable or even interesting. Of course there are very manipulative psychpaths that do everything to achieve their goals, but he isn't manipulative, he is just blunt and gets away with it for some reason. Or to put it in a different way, he gets away with it for a specific reason, but in that case there is no manipulation required and he is just extorting other characters in the movie. Which sure is ruthless, but, again, not very engaging or interesting on a psychological level. There is just no nuance at all to his character.
I think what this movie desperately needed was another perspective, maybe follow the police Investigators around as they try to find out what Gyllenhall is on about and have them put pressure on the Nina character, so there would be more of a dilemma for her, because as it is, noone really seems to have to loose anything on real consequence, maybe she looses her job, put apparently that has happened before and it's not really clear whether that would mean much. Again, expanding to another perspective could really help here, as it is we just don't get enough development in the story I feel, just watching Gyllenhall do everything for fame or money isn't enough.
Or maybe the story needs to have a twist that really puts the story in a different context, but as it is the story is very predictable and again, just not interesting enough to carry the movie.
In the end, as a character story it fails because the character isn't interesting enough, as a media satire it fails because there is no satire and as a story it fails because it is too predictable and linear, which leaves some very nice cinematography and great music wasted on a boring movie.
