The Dialogues ruin this movie
21 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie could be great, or at least good, but it gets lost in endless dialogues that pretend that they are deep, but they are just surface level and benign to the point of it being extremely irrittating. At the same time the movie doesn't go far enough to it really achieve it's goal of being a satire, everything stays on a maybe extreme, but still somewhat realistic level that just leaves you empty handed as a viewer, because what was the goal here? To show the media is bad? How, eh, original?

Also Gyllenhalls character is just not believable or even interesting. Of course there are very manipulative psychpaths that do everything to achieve their goals, but he isn't manipulative, he is just blunt and gets away with it for some reason. Or to put it in a different way, he gets away with it for a specific reason, but in that case there is no manipulation required and he is just extorting other characters in the movie. Which sure is ruthless, but, again, not very engaging or interesting on a psychological level. There is just no nuance at all to his character.

I think what this movie desperately needed was another perspective, maybe follow the police Investigators around as they try to find out what Gyllenhall is on about and have them put pressure on the Nina character, so there would be more of a dilemma for her, because as it is, noone really seems to have to loose anything on real consequence, maybe she looses her job, put apparently that has happened before and it's not really clear whether that would mean much. Again, expanding to another perspective could really help here, as it is we just don't get enough development in the story I feel, just watching Gyllenhall do everything for fame or money isn't enough.

Or maybe the story needs to have a twist that really puts the story in a different context, but as it is the story is very predictable and again, just not interesting enough to carry the movie.

In the end, as a character story it fails because the character isn't interesting enough, as a media satire it fails because there is no satire and as a story it fails because it is too predictable and linear, which leaves some very nice cinematography and great music wasted on a boring movie.

Difficult
23 November 2019
This is a very difficult film to judge, because it has a lot going for it, but also a lot of problems in its very concept. As a movie generally it works quite well, it's always moving forward (literally as well as figuratively), you know what the goal is and the visuals are great, the train looks like something out of the 50s or 60s and it really works quite well. Also the performances are up to par as well, so it has a lot you want from a movie. It's also fun to discover the sections of the train along with the protagonists. I think it suffers a bit from some tired tropes, but I really don't think that is much of a problem at all.

The problems come in when you think about the whole concept of the film and the very idea of the train itself. It just makes no sense to have this train going if you just could use this incredible technology to build a settlement somewhere or just stop the train, which is just one of many points you can make against the whole concept. They try to explain some things in the movie, but a lot of questions remain unanswered as well and that leaves you wanting a bit by the end, which is a shame because in a movie like this learning about the train and the world in general is a big part of the experience and it just doesn't deliver on that front if you really think about it. Ultimately it's a fun enough movie to watch and I don't think anyone will regret watching it, but be also prepared to be disappointed a bit.

There is just nothing here
25 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The problem with this movie is, that it offers nothing for anyone. The main focus should be the action set pieces, a la 2012. And that movie of course is awful in its own right, but I would at east say it delivered on that front. Unlike this movie, which is almost two hours long and and you get two or three scenes where you really see some major destruciton happening and even then it is very disappointing for such an recent film that should have all the effects budget in the world. But even if we look at the characters, there is just nothing there. Gerard Butler as the this genius scientist is just laughable, his brother as a somewhat high ranking gouvernment official even more so and who else even is there? The daughter just serves as some sort of plot device and has no character apart from aparently also being a genius, which doesn't come into play at all in the movie, wo why even bring it up? The crew Butlers character works with later on are a total waste as well and are just a bunch of clichees (and don't even know who is apparently, even though he build the whole operation which is a mssive thing? What movie?) I sort of like the brothers secret service fiancee, but even then she really isn't great or can save the movie in any way. The ending of course is some sort of sappy happy ending, but of course that is what you want for such a movie I guess, but in this it just doesn't feel earned and you are just glad it's over. But again, the main failing of this movie is the lacking action. This movie clearly wanted to be 2012 as I already mentioned and it just isn't there. Maybe 2012 just ruined this kind of genre in a way, because what else can you really do, but if you really don't get much more than a massive wave and the solar laser from that on James Bond movie, you are in trouble if that is what your movie is build on.

Star Trek: Court Martial (1967)
Season 1, Episode 20
7/10
Weak setup, Good Execution
30 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The problem with the episode is, that Kirks alleged motive is really weak, so it never seems believable that he would do what he is accused of. Finney hates Kirk because he ruined his career (which seems believable, even though Kirk did everyting right and saved everyones lives by the sound of it, Finney included) but then Kirk is supposed to hate him back just because Finney hates him? I don't buy that at all. Also it isn't really clear why Starfleet is adamant to ruin him completely after he wants to go to trail, when they were willing to sweep it under the rug before. The execution is good though, so after the initial weakness the court scenes and his interaction with his laywer are well done and the episode never gets boring. The Kirk saves the day action ending seems tacked on, but also par for the course in TOS. Also, it seems like a pretty huge problem to me that a single computer expert can change the computer in such a way as it is displayed in the episode, but that's just another one of these things that just happens to be forgotten after the episode ended.

Bloomkamp, for good and for bad
24 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie overall is good, it's well made and the action is fine, Matt Damon works in the title role, although it feels just like he is playing Jason Bourne again, but I'm not complaining about that. The problems stem from the fact that first the world on earth doesn't work at all, since it is supposed to be 150 years in the future, but looks more like Nigeria today, with some future tech sprinkled in there, but it's clearly not enough to make it believable. The other, more major problem in my eyes, is the fact that Blomkamp can only deal in very blunt topics that lack all subtlety, he is extremely placative and that really brings this movie and also District 9 for example, down. In District 9 it was how terrible we treat refugees and here it is how terrible the 1% are, get it? Get it? Really? Do you get it, or do you need me to make it more obvious for you? Is what Blomkamp is probably thinking during the filming of his movies and it really annoys me while watching said movies. Also the ending is just action schlock that leads to a more or less happy ending, which might be necessary for a big poduction like this, but really doesn't help the movie.

The long haul
26 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Overall a good movie, I think the main problem is, that it is simply too long, especially the first half where they establish the background of the characters goes on too long or at least isn't interesting enough, the second hald when they finally go to space is fun though and definitely makes the movie worth watching overall.

Ice Road Terror (2011 TV Movie)
6/10
If you like bad movies, this is a fun one
19 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Well, this movie is hilarious. Hilariously bad that is. The budget is two million and it shows. The monster, which is the center piece of the movie, just looks terrible, but that's what makes the movie fun. I had to laugh so much the first time they showed it on screen.

Of course the movie has no logic whatsoever. The main "plot" is that two truckers have to make one last delivery before the spring comes and then they encounter the monster which was awoken (or whatever) by some sort of mining operation. Then they go and kill it. Done. That's your plot.

One scene of the movies has the trucks on the titular ice road and the monster breaking through the ice. Which is all fine and dandy, but you will notice that the ice is not even an inch thick but is supposed to support two 40 ton trucks, which would probably require at least two feet of solid ice to support them.

There are a couple other scenes that defy all logic, but that's only to the benefit of the movie, because overall the movie would be pretty boring if not for the terrible action scenes.

The rating of course is a so bad it's good rating, as an actual movie you had to rate it 2 or 3 at best.

Super Shark (2011)

Boring Shark (May contain spoilers)
4 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The problem with this movie is, that there is nothing for nobody there. As you may easily guess, this movie can never be taken seriously as a movie a la Jaws (whose story it completely rips off with addition of the military for good measure), because the budget is too low and the actors aren't up to par. So all you are left with is the kills and the so bad it's good factor. But the movie disappoints on both fronts. The kills are mostly pretty boring and not very fun (also the special effects really aren't great obviously, in fact they are terrible) and the rest of the movie is too well made (relatively speaking of course) to contain much funny stuff. No real laughs or really, really bad cgi or whatever else. The end is clearly the best, since most ridiculous, scene, but not enough to recommend watching the whole movie for it. You see some pretty ladies in bikinis, but I guess that stopped being a reason to recommend a bad movie when the internet started to take hold some 20 years ago.

An okay movie
29 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is okay. That's it. It has okay acting, okay action, okay special effects and so on. I guess if you are really into this kind of movie, you will like it a lot, because even though I'm not, I enjoyed it enough. The story is nothing to speak of, even if I would spell it out completely I wouldn't put a spoiler warning, because its blatantly obvious where it goes after five minutes, if not after looking at the poster. I think one thing that is missing is some really great scene that elevated the movie and be it only by being really cheesy. It maybe sounds strange, but I think this movie is too dignified for it's own good. Also, a better villain would really help. Although I kinda liked him, he was pretty bland beyond that he was a good fighter and that's it basically. Again, a bit more cheese would have helped make this movie more fun to watch because it is just a pretty standard affair plot wise. But, what I would emphasize, you get what your are promised with that film, and in the end, that's what counts.

Boyhood (I) (2014)

Well, three hours? Twelfe years rather (Spoilers)
27 February 2015
How I imagine this movie came to be: Richard Linklater presented his script to some studio people and they said to him: Well, you wrote a nice story with every cliché in the book and painful to read dialogue. We like it, but we have like 50 of these piled up here already. So what's the difference? And Linklater thought for a few seconds and said: Well, I would like to make this movie incredibly hard to make and give it an pointless, yet somehow fascinating gimmick. Well, we all now about the gimmick and when you think to yourself, they filmed that years ago, that's kinda crazy. But ultimately it doesn't add anything to the movie, because in the end you could tell me they just casted some kids that look the part and put some make up on Ethan Hawke and you had the same movie filmed in thirty days instead of 12 years. And like I already said, the script has every cliché you could wish for. Divorced parents? Check. New father is a drunk alcoholic who beats his wife? Check? They have to move every week? Check. Bullies who hate on Mason for no reason whatsoever and are only seen once? Check. Camping with Dad? Check. Emo hair? Check. Rednecks? Check. Wants to be an artist and is of course talented, but lacks work ethics? Check. Well, I do realise that something has to happen in the movie and this is a coming-of-age movie (you might say it's more, but I don't see how), so there will be a love story of some kind and school troubles, but this movie just adds nothing new to it. Ultimately the scenario just isn't very interesting or engaging, because nothing interesting or engaging happens. You just see people living a relatively difficult life and grow up. It's just like Breaking Bad, if your ripped the cooking drugs part out of it and just showed the scenes where the family does something mundane. Doesn't sound great? Yeah, it isn't. You might say the story is realistic and I agree, the stuff in this movie could happen. But other than a documentary which would follow those people over a decade, you still know that there is a script and something will happen, but just because it needs to happen to keep the movie going and not because it is destiny or even just coincidence. Maybe that's the big problem with the movie, it wants to simulate life, but life has no script. You might also say I'm completely missing the point of the movie and it has some deeper meaning I'm just not seeing and maybe that is the case, but I think this movie is just unnecessary and bland. But there are also some parts of the movie I like: Ethan Hawke is great in it. Like I already said, the whole idea of filming this over more than a decade instead of using make up and different actors definitely is fascinating, despite being pointless in my eyes.

Gone Girl (2014)

Far from perfect (Spoiler)
25 February 2015
Overall this movie is enjoyable. It is well made and the performances are all fine, although none of the characters really is as deep as they might should have been. Except maybe for Neil Patrick Harris character, which comes of as extremely bland to me. But I think the main problem with the movie is, that the reveal that Amy is still alive comes before the half of the movie, I think it would have been much more interesting to see him build up as more of a bad guy, because as soon as you see her alive, you know all is a scam and what Ben Afflecks character really did to her is totally unclear. He might have hit her, but he might not. It really felt this was some kind of end of the movie reveal that turns everything around, but then you have still over an hour of movie left and that doesn't make much sense to me. The story in itself isn't too bad, but of course not very believable, to put it mildly. And some of the dialog is hard to listen to because it's just awkward and doesn't work. Overall, the movie is far from totally terrible, but not a masterpiece by any means.

Not completely terrible, but ultimately pointless
24 February 2015
The main problem with this movie is, that there is really no sensible way to make a sequel to Cube. But they probably got more money to do a sequel and who would say no to that? So what could they do? Of course! Build a larger Cube! Genius! And time shenanigans for some reason. Genius? And, of course, the government is behind it all. Super Genius! But the movie itself isn't that terrible I find, it has some enjoyable scenes and the cube is still terrifying enough to keep you interested. Like I already said, the movie is far from horrible or unwatchable, but there is just no point to a Cube sequel to exist in the first place. I have yet to watch the prequel, but that seems to be even more pointless than this film.

Enjoyable movie, despite severe lack of making any sense
23 February 2015
Well, this movie makes no sense at all, but I would lie if I said I didn't enjoy it. The whole plot seems to be about the connection between mother and child which some unknown (but able to catapult people into space) force is trying to understand. Why? Who knows! Who cares! The atmosphere is nice and the performances are decent, but not groundbreaking. The camera work is nice and the music fittingly creepy. I enjoyed the catapult-into-space scenes, although, again, they don't make any sense. Overall, like I said, it didn't make sense, but I enjoyed it. I don't know anything about the alternate ending, but it seems to be good.
