Casablanca (1942)
Fantastic film
Very entertaining and well paced, I sat through the whole thing without once checking the time and when it was over, i felt like the film was much shorter than it actually is. There isn't a scene that feels misplaced.
The characters are well established and easy to grasp, the film does a wonderful job making you understand what everyone's relationship with everyone is. That is achieved through various filming techniques, such as characters being different heights to display their inferiority/superiority in a relationship, various clever angle uses, well written dialog and of course, great acting.
The mood, i think, is set quite well, you can feel like you are in this Rick's saloon, there is really a lot of attention given to detail to make it a believable place.
There wasn't, at least for me, any confusion as to what exactly is going on on the screen, which sometimes happens for me with some of these older movies, so that's a plus.
At first, as I was watching the movie, I thought that the relationship between Rick and the girl didn't have much going for it, but when the film was over, I understood everything, where Rick stood, where the girl stood and where the other guy stood. It really just came together perfectly.
The movie is pretty much without flaws, if we look past some minor exposition scenes, that are needed anyway.
I was going to give it a 9, but after writing this review, I figured out I have no problems with it, so it's a 10.
Death Note - Desu nôto: The Last Name (2006)
Great Alternative Story
After first film's unexpected finale, this one continues adopting the manga storyline while adding some minor original twists, leading to a completely changed and, in my opinion, improved ending.
Although bad visual effects and mediocre acting might turn some people off. If you can look past that, and if you weren't satisfied with the original manga ending, this might be just what you are looking for.
