Apocalypsis (2018)
There are some really really amazing moments in this film worth beholding
This movie is I don't want to resort to calling this movie a spectacle of intensity. Intensity is a lazy way of phrasing nothing; no thoughts properly conveyed. What I experience was more intricate and serving of a more apt description. Eric Leiser presents us the audience with visions accompanied by a marvelous music composed by his brother Jeff that really serve to immerse the viewer in the vision more so. The word vision over used so it doesn't evoke what I want it to evoke, but what else can I say? Just as the Book of Revelations is filled with John recounting various visions he is experiencing so is Eric immersing us in these visions by having the main character; Evelyn having visions while reading the book of revelation. Eric Leiser seems to be a product of world cinema and experimental cinema. Bergman said of Tarkovsky that he "captures life as a reflection; life as a dream." When I say that Eric emerses us, the viewers, in a vision, I mean it in the same sense that I imagine Berman says of the nature of Tarkovsky's films. Eric Leiser profoundly with reverence approaches the Book of Revelation; emerses the viewers in this vision of visions. It's some sort of patch work like some sort of tapestry both in the structure of the film and the nature of the content. This movie feels like at times a random passion project cyberpunk web series you randomly stumble upon on you tube, then it feels like some sort of folk art, then it feels like more of a Tarkovsky or Parajanov or Svankmajer film. Apocalypsis brings to the mind the work of the likes of Stan Brakhage or Apichatpong Weerasethakul or the last couple films of Carlos Reygadas or the more recent work of Terrence Malick. I also feel comfortable comparing it to a movie like On the Silver Globe. There's a consistent spiritual thread for the main character (Evelyn) follows all while juxtaposing her faith with people with whom she's close with but have very different perspectives on the nature of the universe, but of course Evelyn's journey takes center stage because while she's reading revelations she begins to get bombarded with visions; and these visions that Eric works towards portraying. In which at points certain torments surface and the struggle portrayed in revelation is really felt.
Imagination (2007)
Very beautiful heart felt film
I'm not too good at articulating my thoughts, but I'll try to just to get more people to watch this amazing. I could go on about the visuals, and music, but there's no way I could do it justice. This IMDb score doesn't do it justice! It makes me want to throw my computer out the window, how unjustifiably low it is. People complain about the acting, but I love it. Not ironically whatsoever, it makes clear all the heart that went into making this, with complete lack of cynicism towards the process, and pure ambition and results to offer with that ambition, some of the dialogue even works like beautiful poetry, like when the mother interrupts the doctor at the beginning. And I sympathized with the doctor I could sense his compassion for the twins and I dug his whole character movement from beginning to end. The way it was made reminded me of Nic Winding Refn's approach where it has a low budget movie vibe, but the emotions that are focused on rise above that whole novelty sector, and so you end up with an excellent piece of art. I very much loved the music and sounds the film had to offer, the aesthetics. The film definitely gotta be up there, with the greatest movies I've seen in my life time, definitely check it out, I can't recommend it enough. If you're into Svankmajer, Lynch (especially if you're into Twin Peaks or even eraserhead) or heck even Jodorosky, I mainly say Jodorosky because of all the heart put into this, with unapologetic-ally expressive imagery, though unlike Jodorosky,I feel like there's a less dogmatic approach to it,it's just presented as a story and the story is marvelous. I listed a couple directors, but the Leiser brothers have a unique style. They put their very soul into this , and this movie is one that healed me, and it's full of life and energy. I can't say that for another movie I've watched, though that's on a more personal level. It's work that had a purpose, but was honest. The ending was also super rad. I loved the microscope scene, and the church scene with the doctor. Beautiful story. (I know i'm all over the place, but i don't care) Amazing film, it's brought so so so so much joy to my life with it's tender scenes filled with lots of emotions that come out naturally, the film never forces me to feel a specific way, i can feel however i want, and the ambiguity gives the film life. A must watch simply said. For any age.
Eclectic Shorts by Eric Leiser (2004)
Amazing collection of shorts!
The shorts were always emotional, being that there was always some connection i could feel with the creators. I really liked it's optimism with the low budget as opposed to cynicism a lot of times seen with people who have low budget, and create nothing great, but all these shorts were great, very great. I loved all of them, the camera was alive! and it was hungry for beauty, the music was great and MADE you appreciate what you think is dull and mundane to be beautiful. I really loved it, on the flip side don't go with the expectation of what you impose films should be, but these films don't care about that, because art isn't recycling the same process over and over. They're more interested in transcending that mentality with pure brilliance, that's all i can say. I'm very much amazed with he creative energy in this truly amazing. It was so so sweet, heartfelt, honest, personal and very much encouraged me with what I'm going through right now.
