The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)
So the paradox really is that it created more questions than it gave answers, despite promising the opposite?
Okaaay, so I'm quite familiar with the Cloverfield films and I consider myself quite a great fan and I might say that this entry in the Cloverfield universe pretty much fits in and kind of goes where it intends to go, but not quite.
I mean, it starts off really promising, it actually made me wonder why were all the reviews so critical, because I was quite invested in what it seemed to be, even though there were horror movie cliches every now and then. The acting was great, the effects, setting and approach (the thing with the body horror) were nice, too, but as the movie progressed it just went along the line of boring horror movies that end "by the book" just like last year's 'Life'.
I thought the movie was shot and directed pretty nicely, but at one point it became bloated with plot holes and things just thrown in the movie, which were hardly ever explained. All in all, it kind of ties into the whole Cloverfield universe and it truly does provide the possibilities for other movies, but does it really answer the questions the other two movies left us asking? No, not really. And I do have to say that I barely cared for any of the characters besides Hamilton, which contributes to another issue I had with the movie - its writing there was lots of exposition delivered in a very lazy way and I also found some parts, including the humor, to be quite forced. The whole movie almost felt crammed in its runtime, with a pacing that I feel should've been slower.
Honestly though, putting aside all the flaws this movie has, I do think it was a fairly enjoyable experience for me and I found myself invested, at the edge of my seat if you would, throughout the whole movie (more at the beginning, less at the ending). So if don't mind watching a perfectly watchable sci-fi space thriller, I'd say you would have a good time with this movie.
Gerald's Game (2017)
Another Mike Flanagan masterpiece!
Everything about this movie is absolutely awesome. I haven't read the source material, but the film certainly is one of my most favourite films this year, a totally genuine horror movie without cheap scares and dumb gore, instead with an intense plot and genius direction by Mike Flanagan. Carla Gugino undoubtedly carried this movie - her performance is without a doubt Oscar-worthy and I'd be very disappointed if she doesn't get nominated at the least. Basically I loved everything about this movie, you can read a full review on my blog: https://entomorphis.blogspot.com/2017/11/geralds- game.html
Atomic Blonde (2017)
Atomic entertainment, but not as atomic plot
'Atomic Blonde' is David Leitch's directorial debut and stars Charlize Theron as Lorraine Broughton, the main protagonist, and James McAvoy as David Percival, the baddie (with John Goodman and an impressive ensemble on the supporting side). Basically the movie's about a British smoking-hot agent slash spy thrown by MI6 in Berlin amidst the fall of the Berlin Wall to retrieve a list of missing double agents and to beat up some really bad people. What shines about this movie is, of course, the acting, its overall stylish and original look, its score, the directing of the action scenes and cinematography - it certainly was a well-looking movie. What I found lacking, though, or simply not as good, was the plot.
What I absolutely loved about this movie were the astonishing and stylistically awesome visuals. It's like the gorgeous cinematography, the intense and well-made action scenes, the thematically appropriate soundtrack fusioned together to make this piece of original modern day film art. I enjoyed the movie a lot. It was a very fun ride, propelled by the fantastic acting and well- chosen cast members and great directing.
Another thing that shines about the movie are the action sequences, which at some points during the movie are really long, intense, and breath-taking, and not the usual shaky cam that many action films make use of these days.
I really don't get why are some people slamming this movie down so hard. Yes, the plot isn't exactly great and the movie gets confused what's the main plot goal in all the action, but that doesn't hurt the movie a whole lot and I think that people should just calm down and enjoy the movie, because it isn't a genius masterpiece with some kind of world-changing message, it's a goddamn action movie and it's very entertaining the way it is, despite the weak plot. And about the lesbian sex scenes. I think they were very fitting for the movie and contributed to the movie's cool atmosphere, putting emphasis on the personality and feelings of Theron's character.
I enjoyed this movie a lot and instead of complaining people should just learn to enjoy a fine film, rather than doing their best to find every flaw they can. The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
Mind your expectations
'The VVitch' is an excellent, and to my mind, a perfectly genius horror movie, which isn't at all reliant on cheap horror movie clichés and tricks like loud sound jump scares, tremendous amounts of blood and gore or unbelievable ghost stories, no - it sets an amazingly creepy and suspenseful atmosphere, accompanied by a terrific score and wonderful cinematography. Everything about this movie is on point and well made, it succeeds in everything it wants to be - the main idea of the movie is quite original and it is brilliantly executed.
What I meant by "mind your expectations" is that some people might watch the movie expecting to see a gore-fest and an insane witch terrorizing people, but that isn't the case. The witch's character is so well-built and written - she's not your typical horror movie monster going about killing off people, on the contrary - we rarely get to see her and she's basically a part of the terrifying atmosphere, we don't see her but, we're still afraid of her and so are the characters. They don't even know for certain whether she exists and that's one of the reasons that their family breaks apart.
Anyway, I loved this movie and everything about it - the cinematography is beautiful, the screenplay is brilliant, the acting is top-notch and the atmosphere is absolutely horrifying - exactly how a true horror film should be.

Don't Hang Up (2016)
Artistically disgusted
Welp! So much for the nice cover! Anyways, this movie was basically a formulaic redo of every other slasher/killer-arrives-at-my-house type of movie that includes a choice-making game or w/e.
The first and the last 5 minutes were nice and the rest of the movie was B O R I N G - here's why:
1) Poorly developed characters; nothing makes u want to root for them and u're just like "um, am i supposed to feel sad here"; 2) Clichés every 30 seconds; 3) Poor background and ambiance sounds, most of the time they were sooooo out of place and odd; 4) Too many impossible to explain things, for example, how on earth does the antagonist, which we know nothing about till the end of the movie, so much knowledge on technology? And how dafuq is it possible to manipulate the landline, the GSM coverage, and the main character's house technology and electricity only thru the laptop we get to see in the bad guy's truck??? 5) Literally no suspense, everything was sooooo predictable - no plot twists, no surprises, u literally could see everything coming.
Welp, I could keep going, but u probs get the idea. Anyway, what I did like about the movie a lot was the camera work. It was absolutely incredible, like damn boi! Congratz on that, but how good is a movie that the only nice thing about is the camera work - a hint - it's not.
