How to turn a classic into a flop.. Just add Russell Brand.
4 September 2015
I'm unsure why Russell Brand was cast in this role, yes he's English but he's not the lovable character Dudley Moore manufactured in the original film, nor could I warm to him. The moment you see Duddly Moore in the original film his energy just pulls you in and you really want him to find love and happiness. I couldn't give two hoots about sleezy Russell Brand.

The original film was beautifully crafted and each character played a part that screamed 'classic', John Gielgud steals many a scene with tremendous delivery and typically 'dry' British wit that ties the whole film into such a wonderful package.

Sadly the sloppy false bravado that Russell Brand throws out makes him seem arrogant and unlikeable.

This 'reboot' of a truly great film should be quickly forgotten and the smile return when you put the original DVD on.

Beyond embarrassing
26 August 2015
Everything about this film is appalling, the actors have a catalog of work which I think we all have at least one DVD from each in our homes (other than Stephen Baldwin) yet the acting in this film is abysmal! Baldwins acting is so bad, I mean truly shockingly awful you have to watch with one eye closed to save half of your brain from the torture.

The moment Daryl Hannah stomps around in her military uniform complete with stacks of floppy bedraggled hair going in all directions from under her beret you just know this film has not attention to detail or direction.

To be brutally honest... I couldn't watch all of it, Stephen Baldwin took to speaking in a low gravely Batman voice for the close scenes and his visual acting, tilting his head and giving far away looks were something out of a kids Christmas production.

There is nothing to like about this film, if you're an aspiring actor though you MUST watch this and never repeat anything you see.

A wonderful tale that just makes you smile.

Okay, I watched this late the other night not expecting much but sometimes these low budget films deliver and I was so glad I watched it.

Firstly Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) absolutely steals this film, his delivery of his character is acting gold! His character (again called Aiden) is one of life's lovable downtrodden people who refuse to give in and feel sorry for themselves, no matter what. Aiden sees the good in everyone and continually smiles at the daily difficulties that's thrown at him and you'll immediately warm to him, this is the immense power of his incredible acting abilities. The film shows Tom who has left his life behind cross paths with Aiden and how they sort of 'mend' each other.

If you love a film that doesn't conform to the usual stories or just want a masterclass in character acting then this film is a total joy.

Loved loved loved this little treasure.

I found nothing to like about this film.
1 June 2015
This film should have started with Rod Serlings immortal words; "imagine if you will..." because this film is a little like a patchwork of 'Twighlight Zone' episodes.

This film relies too heavily on 'cut backs' to scenes from the past and then flips to the present in a desperate attempt to sew the two together, it honestly doesn't work (imho) and the characters are to under written with the focus being on the haunted mirror.

Sadly this was all rather predictable and pedestrian and you just know what's going to happen (if you're as old as me AND seen as many horror flicks) it offered nothing new and I just can't bring myself to like any of it.

Sorry.

A desperate attempt at a 'mob' film
29 April 2015
Imagine if you will all the scenes in 'Mafia' films that have stirred your imagination or induced a sense of wonder at the 'mob' culture both at the internal structure of the 'family' and the loyalty that it demands, or, the dark and depraved levels of brutality that is served colder than yesterday's Ziti. Each film, and let's not forget the wonderful Sopranos series depicted more than their fair share of gruesome details. Now imagine hurrying to fill every scene, sub-plot and hard hitting moment into one film? Well, this is it.

This film seems hurried, the scenes are empty and the plot holes and unbelievable relationships between characters are clear and awkward. This is a film that you think you've seen before simply because there's nothing original to the viewer. I did find myself saying 'no' at predictable story lines... I did say 'no' rather a lot!

The best thing about this film was smiling at Harvey Keitels New Jersey? accent.

Toe curling and cringingly dreadful
28 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a hateful film, I mean it really is nothing more than a platform to launch another 'Smith' super ego from and in that respect it delivers. I found the acting to be so bad from both Smiths I had to push the vomit back in with both hands upon each self gratifying scene.

Jaden Smith is a very unlikeable character who's lack of personality is only surpassed by his incredible lack of acting, he seems like a bit of a brat in the real world and this transfers into what you see in the film.

Ultimately this rubbish film ends in one of the most cringingly awful scenes I've ever had the misfortune of witnessing. The 'salute' scene at the end actually made me swear out loud at the film for mocking my intelligence.

So, in summary this film is; appalling, embarrassing and a vision of an even more arrogant Smith waiting to be in every film for the next twenty years. Let's pray this doesn't happen.

Treehouse (2014)

One of the most confusing films that left me wanting less.
28 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, I may add SPOILERS so beware...

This is probably the only film I've ever seen that actually changes genres halfway through! You start off thinking your watching a horror film born from the never fail plots of great films gone before, kids lost in a forest during a spate of child abductions etc etc... Then, there's the Treehouse itself... No reason why or how, you just need to accept that this has magically always been there. From this point on, you are watching a horror film, it alludes to a mysterious monster/creature in the night lurking around in the shadows.. But then...

Suddenly and without any hint, the monsters, ghouls or wherever you think is there are now substituted for people, wheezy asthmatic bumpkin folk with no real identity to the area or plot, I mean this is now getting silly.

After some truly awful filling time and bizarre scenes (I won't discus the end) the film turns into Kick Ass!

It felt to me that this film was written by four or five people who all had forty pages each sewn into this film with no shame or no desire to offer any type of story to the people who watched it, it truly is a production mess with no direction.
