Campy Throwback Fun!
14 September 2013
I had first head about Johnny X a couple of years ago and had been wanting to see it, as I have been a fan of Will Keenan since TERROR FIRMER. I didn't know too much about the movie going in other than it was a sci-fi, and it was supposed to be the last movie ever, ever, shot on real black and white FILM. Not digital, but true film stock, lots of little pictures in a row, film. I had been meaning to look it up but had kind of forgotten about it until I actually came across it at my local library - which, I have to say, has an awesome taste in movie selections - and immediately grabbed it. Popping it in, we are treated with Kevin McCarthy (aka The Bad Guy from UHF...) sentencing Will Keenan to a horrible punishment for his crimes... Earth! *this is not a spoiler, this is the first minute of the film* I was also super excited to see that JX starred Reggie PHANTASM Banister and Creed THE OFFICE Bratton in juicy roles as well. Overall this is a really fun homage to 50's sci-fi that gets just about everything right, from the costumes to the cars to the sets to the songs. It updates a few things here and there (mostly the effects), but keeps that camp feel that makes watching old films so much fun. If you "got" and enjoyed THE LOST SKELETON OF CADAVRA, JX will be right up your alley. If you like watching MST3K, but sometimes more for the 50's movies themselves, you'll love this. Highly recommended.

Zombie Satire... maybe too intelligent for some
11 February 2006
I don't see how all of these people think that this is the worst movie ever, or worst zombie movie ever. I just don't get it. The acting was not bad, especially for a very low-budget film. The effects were OK, again low budget. Where this film shines is the writing, the satire.

It's f*cking good writing. Intelligent, funny, and poking at the viewer and all of America... I think all these people who hated it just weren't smart enough to get it. If you're an intelligent zombie movie fan, go check out Feeding the Masses - available for rent at Hollywood Video. If you're NOT intelligent, if you're not interested in more than just "what's on the surface," go see DEAD LIFE or some other piece of zombie crap.

gross, low production values, and F*CKING FUNNY!!!
13 September 2005
First off, if you have a problem with low budgets, don't even bother with this film because you'll think "it's the worst movie I've ever seen" or some such crap. If you can look past the low budget (read: low quality cameras, bad sound, amateur (over)acting, etc.) then this is a REALLY F*CKING FUNNY movie! I was lucky enough to see this at the TromaDance New Mexico film festival, and I was rolling in the aisles for the entire time! Chris Seaver has taken the idea of gross-out humor to new, almost unforgivable lows. Oral sex that goes wrong, farting and poop, etc., you get the idea. It sounds kind of juvenile, and it is juvenile, in that X-rated adult kind of way.

Long story short: this film is really offensive... and really funny. If you can deal with low budgets and gross humor, check out Chris Seaver's films (I recommend Filthy McNasty), especially this one which should be available through Troma Entertainment soon...

Drive (1997)

seen both cuts - directors rocks!
26 August 2005
SO many people out there have words about Drive, saying it's just a knock off of Rush Hour. Nope. Drive was made first. Not only that, Drive has been referenced in a bunch of movies, as far up as THE MATRIX (Agent Smith's glasses cracking in 1/2 - that scene was shot the same day that production peoples met with the action supervisor of Drive... where the same thing happens!) It's too bad that people on the money side had to mess this film up. I saw the regular release, and liked it enough to go out and buy it. It was a better than average action film, and could have done OK in theaters, I think... it didn't need to be a direct-to-video movie. Recently I saw the director's cut and DAMN IT'S GOOD! This movie would have been huge in theaters I think. Unfortunately someone on the financing side decided to cut the movie down and change the soundtrack, so the 117 min cut became the 100 minute cut and lost it's buzz... and was eventually relegated to the direct-to-video market. This is a shame, cause the directors cut is awesome.

Great action, great witty dialogue, the first (that I know of, correct me if I'm wrong) "cattle prod/electric baton" fight scene, and the main char.s name is TOBY WONG. If you don't get the reference, think about it... if you still don't get it, this movie's probably not for you anyway.

This is a great movie, hopefully we'll see the director's cut eventually get a DVD release... until then the 100 min version is pretty damn good.

Tito! Tito!
23 August 2005
OK, I have only wised up to Troma's greatness within the last 5 years, so I'm still finding the ones I like. Mostly, the one's by Lloyd I like... this one kicks a**! Right behind Sgt. Kubkiman, NYPD, ToxieIV is my favorite Troma outing to date. As the other reviews have said, yes there's the required Troma gore, gags and boobies... and who doesn't like naked people covered in blood? OK, lots of people, but those aren't the people Troma's aiming at! Toxie IV has lots of funny lines, great camp, and it is pretty high technical quality, for a Troma movie. The extras are great and fun to watch. And someone else said that Troma can't be found at video stores, and as for Blockbuster, no they don't carry Troma cause they are way too mainstream. However, every Hollywood video here in Albuquerque has Troma in it... the Hollywood film library at Juan Tabo & Candelaria actually has over 50 Troma titles in stock, including all 4 Toxies! Maybe that's not the case everywhere, but at least here in NM Hollywood loves Troma! NM loves Troma (hence the TramDance NM Film Festival)! Troma Troma Troma! Oh, ps, Tito, while an extremely offensive character, is too funny!!!!

The Stink of Flesh (2005 Video)

Stink Rocks
22 June 2005
The Stink of Flesh is a great example of indy film-making. No, it doesn't have fancy-smancy CGI all over the place; no, it doesn't have a 50 million budget and French star; and no, it doesn't have a bruckmeimer/weinstein/lucas attached.

What it does have is: *A witty, well-structured script. *Great direction and photography. *A plot. *A bunch of hard working, unpaid people making film for the love of making film.

themanmythlegend who thought that this was the worst thing he's seen: what have you seen, like 4 films ever? This movie has humor, it has style, and more than that: it's different (who's mixed zombies and "alternative lifestyles" before???) and it has heart (which you can't buy, even with a 50 million budget.) So to you, mr. Legend - what have you made that's better? I'd like to see it! To everyone else who wants to make their own movies: here's a great example of what you can do with a little love!
