Limitless (2011)
Great movie with a questionable message
The main character is a loser-type writer who is struggling not just with a writer's block. He is basically struggling with anything in life. One day he meets an old acquaintance who offers him an apparently legal drug that expands your mental capacities. It works perfectly. The only problem: it is highly addictive. Our loser-type writer now embarks on a completely new life as a successful doing-everything. Unfortunately he soon comes in conflict with law and the lawless.
It's a great movie, which I highly recommend and offers a couple of interesting, maybe even new, shots and ideas.
SPOILER! The end does not follow classical dramatic teaching. Which is very nice and refreshing on one hand. It remains depressing on the other. Because what this movie tells us is, drugs are okay. You just need to obey and calculate their drawbacks. This is a message I do find disturbing.
Profile of Fear (2011)
Disturbing story, trashy film
This simple flick kind of remains roaming in my brain. On one hand I think this clearly needs a remake, since camera and some acting are, well, not that good, to say it diplomatically. Besides that flaws, this is a terrific movie. Though I did not really liked Andy, the lead character, I kind of felt with him on his way through investigating a cold case - which turns out to be just a sub-plot of a far more serious problem: Andy's life and happiness. If you like this film (which requires full concentration), you probably want to see it a second time. Only then I discovered these little bits that give hints to what is actually going on. And beware: This movie is a bit depressing. Saying this, I want to applaud the writers who did a great job, and probably the director, who achieved to create something which left a knot in my heart - despite the technical flaws here and there.
