Empire of the Ants (1977)
Empire Of the Ants; It hurts so good
Besides the fact that this severely 70's flick has the usual your-pollution-is-why-this-happened theme, besides the fact that it has the look and feel of an extended episode of "CHiPs," besides the fact that everybody in it is whiter than "The Brady Bunch," and besides the fact that most of the hairstyles are scarier than the damn ants, this flick has an appealing chutzpah because it plods gamely through an almost unbearably bad script. But then again, if the producers had the vision to combine ol' Joan with with such hammy writing, maybe we're talking genius here. Make no mistake, this movie is truly awful. Awful in a way that makes one root for the most savage instincts of the cranky, real-estate acquiring insects.
Revolt in the Big House (1958)
hard boiled "tough guy" prison movie
The joy of this movie is that it filled with generic (corny) lines and situations throughout, yet it is still a great yarn. Some friends and I discovered this flick accidentally on TV years ago in the 70's and it has enjoyed a surreptitious cult-like status ever since. With lines like, "I can't eat, I can't sleep, food turns sour in my belly," and characters with a name like Bugsy, and a very young Robert Blake spouting, "Oh, holy Toledo!" you just cannot go wrong watching this movie with some friends. I challenge anybody who sees this movie to try and not quote at least one of the many unforgettable lines for days and/or years after seeing Lou and the gangs travails inside the unforgiving walls of "the big house."
