The Little Mermaid (2023)
Better than expected
Was so lucky to have actually seen it two days before it comes out via an AMC Theatres Early Access Screening in 3D! The main reason to see it is Halle Bailey and her amazing performance as Ariel. She nailed all the aspects the role required, same because Melissa McCarthy was the right pick for Ursula. Alan Menken did it once again with the iconic score and the specifically little new touches to the story to expand on Ariel and Eric's relationship earns an extra point, making us really be a "part of their world." The visuals look better when seen in 3D, and it looked much, much more "technicolorful" than the trailers. Definitely go and see it! And don't listen to the review bombers (that madness needs to stop and I mean it). Go in with an open mind.
The Fabelmans (2022)
Another great masterpiece from Spielberg
Spielberg brings us his most personal film yet and one that will for sure resonate with audiences everywhere and inspire the aspiring artists in all of us. Michelle Williams' performance as Sammy's mother tugs at the heartstrings, while Judd Hirsch as Uncle Boris gives a memorable monologue that will earn him a Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. Gabriel LaBelle's portrayal of the protagonist Sammy Fabelman makes him a character that any filmmaker or artist of any age can relate to. Truly one of the best films of the year and you must go and see it on the biggest screen possible when it comes out.
The Andy Baker Tape (2021)
An "edge of your seat" thrill ride.
Telling the story as a cautionary "found-footage" film adds to the intensity of the unpredictable that awaits for the lead characters, particularly when the BIG TWIST comes near the end, which I won't spoil here. A must-see!
Slapface (2021)
The first great horror film of 2021.
"Slapface" takes elements of a Spielberg-ian family drama and a monster thriller and creates an original story that keeps you guessing even AFTER it ends.
August Maturo (of "Girl Meets World" fame) shows both sides of fear and bravery in his breakthrough performance as Lucas, a young boy emotionally damaged by the loss of his parents, whose friendship with a monster leads to chaos. His on-screen chemistry between him and his brother Tom, played by Mike Manning (a talented Emmy-winning actor/producer you'll recognize from Disney's "Cloud 9" and recently "The Call," "Son of the South" and "Days of Our Lives"), looks so raw and real, that you can really relate to what they're going through in the face of tragedy. Dominick Sivilli's cinematography adds the gritty texture and realism that director Jeremiah Kipp goes for, and Barry J. Neely's haunting score adds to the tension between the characters.
A passion project for Kipp, which is also a feature-length adaptation of his 2017 short film of the same name, "Slapface" keeps you at the edge of your seat in a way you've never imagined. Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride.
Riverdance: The Show (1995)
An unforgettable experience!
My mom saw this exact production the same year this video was released in person and was blown away by the show's choreography and cultural appreciation to Ireland and the other traditions represented. Seeing this on video when I was a kid created that exact same experience. Highly recommended for all ages! 10/10.
Ben Platt Live from Radio City Music Hall (2020)
A concert to remember
I was actually there that night when it happened and watching this concert again is as if I went back in time and re-experienced it live. Ben, the backup singers and band ARE what make the show what it is. If you're looking to listen to some original music from the Tony and Grammy winning actor/singer-songwriter from "Pitch Perfect," "The Politician" and "Dear Evan Hansen," this is the place to hear it.
(PS: I make a cameo 38 min. into the special during the beginning of "Share Your Address.").
