Road House (2024)

Ewan McGregor ruined it
12 April 2024
It could've been a good movie. Jake's acting was very good, but it all came down to ruins when Ewan McGregor showed up. I don't mean his character, but his acting. Never in my life I've seen such a horribly played character. The story was badly adapted from the original, and there wasn't a proper ending. However, none of that hurt the movie só much as McGregor's horrible acting. Please, never again.

All on all, the original was never a great motion picture, but comparing to this remake, it looks like an Oscar winning motion picture. I wonder what are the reasons that motivated this movie to be made, other than give McGregor some undeserving screen time.

Full of holes
21 January 2024
I don't know what the writer of this awful movie knows about computers and AI, but he's been able to make the worst movie ever on the subject. The story is full of holes, the way AI is depicted has absolutely nothing to do with AI, specially if we consider the movie tales place 40 years from now. It is extremely disappointing and a total waste of time. There is no artistic or poetic licence that makes up for the lack of research on the movie. Basic knowledge on how computers interact and AI works would have saved this movie. For example: robots don't need to use voice to speak with each other: they can simple use whatever wireless mesh technology will be available 40 years from now. They also shouldn't be able to miss shots because they can use computerized aiming. This is just a hint of what is wrong with this movie: a writer who knows nothing about technology, hears some buzzwords and tries to write a movie about it, without doing any research or hiring a specialist to help.

Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

Mel Gibson shouldn't have taken so much creative freedom
22 April 2017
First of all, my review is not a reflect of Desmond Doss' actions, life, bravery or courage. He is unarguably a hero, a man who deserves our utmost respect, admiration and gratitude.

My review is about the movie, knowing the little I know about about Mr. Doss, and, having said that, this review IS a reflection of Mel Gibson as a (bad) director.

The first thing that came to my mind after watching the movie is: this is not how it happened at all. This movie is a fiction (loosely) based on a real character, who happens to be a MOH hero, because there are just too many inconsistencies with actual events. Those who have read about Desmond Doss will agree with me that: (a) some facts where exposed in wrong chronological order in the movie; (b) in real life, by the end of the battle for Hacksaw Ridge, Cpl. Doss was in terrible shape and his arm had been shattered by a Japanese sniper shot (he later lost a lung and five ribs due to injuries sustained during his tour); (c) many other events in the movie never took place (such as the military trial); and I could go on and on.

Why Mel Gibson did that is unknown, because the actual events that led to Cpl. Doss being shipped home before the end of the was where a lot more tragic and would (unfortunately) make a much better movie.

Andrew Garfield is an actor who I admire more often than not, but it seems that he was trying just too hard in this movie, and that made his portrayal of Cpl. Doss quite unrealistic.

Shin Godzilla (2016)

A different take on real matters
11 April 2017
This movie is about everything but Godzilla, and this is what makes it a very good movie, 9/10. Godzilla is just an excuse to show problems most of the countries are facing today: excessive bureaucracy, the nuclear threat forced upon us by a few powerful countries, staggering economy, refugees and, most of all, how to deal with a new, unknown powerful and constantly evolving enemy (terrorism) without breaking laws and hurting your own people.

"Shin Godzilla" has all of the above, and we get that in the very first minutes of the movie, and although it is a long movie, it is always surprising us, viewers, with unexpected problems and situations.

If you're going to watch this movie for FX or CGI, forget about it. This is not what this movie is about. Like I wrote, the monster itself is just a "background drop" for showing other real life problems not only Japan, but the entire world is suffering.

It couldn't have been worse if they tried
5 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Everything about this movie is cliché: the story, the dialogs, and even the ending. The cast is made of great actors, but not even they were enough to save this film from a catastrophic failure. Most of the characters add absolutely nothing to the plot. The direction, however, was the worst part of the movie. Some continuity errors were quite amateurish, like the scene {MILD SPOILER FOLLOWS} where Olivia (Hayek) is driving Richard's (Brosnan) Mustang: they leave their house with the child's seat quite visible in the backseat. Throughout all of their drive in LA, the seat is not in the car (as in completely removed), but when they arrive at their destination, Jake's school, the seat is again visible. This mistake is so amateurish, so basic, that from that moment on my hopes for a good movies went down the drain. Do yourself a favor and watch something else. Like the police say in crime scenes: "move along, nothing to see here"!

Chappie (2015)
1/10
Not really any good
18 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
A big injustice done to this move: it doesn't deserve more than 3-4 stars. Picture a mix of Robocop and Wall-e gone wrong, that still isn't as bad as Chappie.

Warning: may contain spoilers from this point on.

There are lots of plot holes (like one every 5 minute): - Chappie, when first turned on, has only a conscience but zero understanding of its surrounding and environment, like a baby or a child, and, yet, he senses fear and despair, something that is not possible without previous experience - characters change their behavior without any warning or motivation, like the woman that goes from a tough criminal to a mother instantly; - Chappie knows the meaning to the word "Mommy" even although he has zero knowledge of the language; - it being smart enough to try not to get involved in a heist, because he knows what a crime is, but too dumb to know what physical violence is.

The language thing, by the way, is the worse part in the movie. Why was Chappie's consciousness firmware void of any language skills? Yet it appears to have knowledge enough to understand the weight of some words.

The "humanity" factor in the movie, if we can call that, is forced and cliché, mostly because Chappie's characters it very badly developed and poorly written.

All in all, this is a terrible movie, with some really bad acting from a good cast. Save yourself the very long 2 hours and do not watch this movie.
