Landmine Goes Click (2015)
Intense
Honestly I have never seen a film so intense as this, its most definitely one very thought provoking drama. Some of the concepts brought out by this film must come from a very dark place in the director's imagination. I think horrifying is the best way I can describe the film I don't know if horrifying is horror I usually think more gore. Standing on a Landmine is bad enough, but for the landmine to be fake, to purposefully put somebody on the Landmine as a revenge act for sleeping with his friends fiancé, but then to add in rape, and then the revenge scenes at the end its just shocking. This isn't something I would normally watch but having seen it recently I felt compelled to write a review about it. I would recommend anybody to watch it, but just think about what you have watched after the event this is the only way you will truly comprehend just how dark it truly is.
Delicatessen (1991)
Superb Film!
This really is an absolutely superb film what's more its the kind of film that makes you sit up and take notice. Jeunet & Caro have created a true masterpiece. This movie is most definitely not for everyone but definitely all of my friends and I enjoyed it. If you love to watch a good witty, dark humoured movie, then this indeed is the movie for you.
This movie is definitely what you might consider an off-beat style and I definitely love watching it time and time again! It can't be classified just as a romance I mean this film has a bit everything for everyone.
Well worth watching!
Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Timeless Disney Treasure
Sleeping Beauty is a good now as it was then, its another Disney timeless classic you can watch over and over without getting bored. That big dragon wow it still scares me to this day! I think modern cartoons and animation loose something in the hand drawn quality I feel like with modern children's films, there almost churning them out like a factory. Mass produced. After watching this film when your a kid you spend the rest of your time trying to recreate that perfect moment. For me through fantasy and science fiction. The quality of the reproduction is just as good as it was originally on the big screen. I can't rate this movie highly enough - 10 out of 10 just doesn't seem to do it justice somehow.
Jason and the Argonauts (1963)
Classic Black and White film acting not the best.
I hate writing reviews based upon other people's comments and prefer to write my own, but for some reason there is so much negativity around this movie I simply felt obliged to give a positive review. I absolutely love this film, and is once of all time favourites. I love the special effects, I love the story line. I will say the acting quality in the film isn't the greatest, to be honest its a little poor which takes a star away. I would have liked to see more of Hercules character, but still its the story that matters to be and its solid. The modern special effects spoil some of the films, so its nice to watch older films with more believable effects. If you like your Greek mythology don't mind watching a classic Black and White film, you will love this, please just overlook the acting quality!
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Really enjoyable film
Everything about this film makes it really enjoyable and a pleasure to watch. Everything about it shines through but in a gentle sort of way. The film has some beautiful and loving characters the setting and the level of colour in this film just superb. Some might say that Hayao Miyazaki is better than Walt Disney. Miyazaki has a wonderful way of blending the characters together I really think he loves his hero's to well be heroines that is he likes female's to be the lead in his films. And I am all for supporting Women in Film. In this film Chihiro doesn't disappoint us. This is a beautiful little film, I really would advise anybody to check it out and give it a watch its truly wonderful.
El laberinto del fauno (2006)
22 minute standing ovation at Cannes says it all
I happened to catch this film on a PPV channel recently and was really impressed having done a little bit of reading about it I read it got a 22 minute standing ovation at the Canne's Film Festival that is incredible. Guillermo Del Toro has created something that is really very special - its separated into different sections - part war movie, part fantasy, and really is a must see. There are some incredible performances in this film especially from Sergi Lopez as Captain Vidal and as central character Ofelia, newcomer Ivana Baquero delivered a performance that looked like that of somebody involved in the business for years! It might be a foreign language film, but the film relies on on screen action much more than that of dialogue and what bit there is has subtitles so its fine.
Well worth a watch. Can't praise it enough.
The Princess Bride (1987)
Classic Modern Fairy Tale! Outstanding!
It's rare when I repeatedly re watch a movie. I've been watching this movie since I was a kid. I find myself still watching it and enjoying every moment.
Romance, pirates, sword fighting, and princesses. What more could you want? It's the kind of movie that the whole family can enjoy. Witty and action packed. It keeps everyone watching till the very end.
Its just such a wonderful modern fairy tale, a truly classic film for parents and kids alike. If you have never seen this film why not? You really must rent it and watch it at the very least. I am 100% sure you will love watching it as much as I have over the years its why I rated it 10 out of 10!
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Its just a must watch film. A real Treasure.
This is by far one of if not the most funny parody films in history. Its a true British Classic. The cast and writers are so clever, they pull of being stupid in a most believable way. I would compare to somebody like Les Dawson, another classic British entertainer who had such a gift on the piano he could deliberately play a song with the wrong notes.
You watch this film, you feel satisfied entertainment wise and value for money wise. This film is leaps and bounds better than modern films like Scary Movie or Austin Powers.
I can't say enough about how good the acting is in this film, every single one of the characters delivers an outstanding performance. It might not have had the biggest budget, but it doesn't show.
Der Himmel über Berlin (1987)
Great movie from the last century
There is good and bad critique around for this film, some people have problems with the pace at which the film runs, others take issue with the Director himself saying he might have been better as a photographer not a film-maker. But in my opinion these people completely miss the purpose of this movie.
The Director Wenders, wanted to make something different, something alternative to the guaranteed ticket selling films. This film doesn't feed adrenaline junkies with high speed car chases or gun slinging shoot outs. Nor does it have oodles of sex.
What this movie does have is a wonderful storyline but one that doesn't draw you in like some movies in this one you feel like your observing the events almost like a witness - from a distance what you feel what you think they are part of the interaction between yourself and the film.
The camera angles and the choice of shots from the director are presented naturally so you know the two main characters want to be together.
Some of the background scenery set in Post WW2 Berlin are just perfect Berlin is a wonderfully diverse city so suits this movie well. The film itself offers up so many different ideas and different perspectives you simply must watch it with an open mind so you can allow your own thoughts and curiosity to interact with the film.
Wonderful film, but I guess not for everybody.
When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
Really Good Film
The first time I watched this film I knew it was good, but each time I watch it I feel it just gets better and better. Its absolute gem of a movie. The story line is well written and keeps in you interested and entertained from the start of the movie to the very end.
I would say the first time you watch it or if you haven't watched it for ages, you are always on the edge of your seat with anticipation of what is going to happen next. I guess its the sign of how good this movie is when you don't even realise your already half way through!
The choice of cast for this film is just wonderful Billy Crystal's performance is probably one of if not his best ever. Meg Ryan looks just so beautiful. I will say its probably one of the roles people forget Carry fisher did, she might not have been lead but she does a good performance and its not Star Wars.
Credit finally should be given to the Director Rob Reiner for putting together such a classic. If you like Rom Com's you will love this film.
Disney's Animation Magic: Beauty and the Beast (2002)
Good Film extras on the DVD aren't needed
I must say I am a sucker for a good Disney film, especially the musical ones. and yes sometimes it makes me cry watching this film (well OK every time), there are good and bad Disney films just like any other company or genre, this one is a classic.
Ashman and Menken do a truly fantastic job in keeping the story moving, unlike films such as Mulan, which I can't even remember one song from. In this film the Voice Acting and the Animation are flawlessly in sync, for its time the use of computer animation in the sequence which takes place in the ballroom I believe was ground breaking for its time.
Looking at the DVD release some of the bonus features which included the song Human Again is wonderful and whilst I understand Disney's reasons for not including it in the final cut, I don't think it would have affected the final story too much if they had included it either. The song was another big production song that was performed by all the cast and would have helped us better get to know them.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
A Film in the True Spirit of the Book.
The big screen adaptation of Lord of the Rings, given the size of the books and Hollywood's need to fit films into a certain amount of reserve shall we say, but to my amazement they did a damn good job. Peter Jackson did an amazing job trying to balance to need to please everybody Those who live and breathe the books, and those who just want to see a good film, but have never read the books. Peter Jackson's decision to film all the three films in the trilogy at the same time I think was the first time anybody had done this. What would the results be? I mean it had to be better than the 70's cartoon version but to the extent it was surprised me completely.
I do wonder about some of the skipped scenes from the book, for example why Mary and Pippin joined without Sam and Frodo even batting an eyelid. There weren't best friends really before this trip. Also in the book Aragorn has to prove himself to Sam and Frodo, this isn't required in the film. But there are the only negatives.
I especially liked Elrond's council I thought it was done extremely well, I liked the way they used voice over work to explain some of the background with reduced the need for screen time and increased the dramatic tension. Further I think it was a stroke of genius increasing Arwen's role and helps the viewers to understand more about the relationship she has with Aragorn. I also liked to romance between Aragon and Arwen.
In the book Tolken failed to explain fully this relationship which in the 3rd part of the trilogy affected the impact the characters had. I have to say and did say earlier the balance between fanatic and casual fan was perfect. Nobody argues you have to adjust scenes shorten, move around, generally increase the dramatic tension, its just not possible to take the story directly from the book word for word Its a film in the true spirit of the book.
Excellent.
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Wonderful Classic Film
Dorothy is played by Judy Garland, and her portrayal has lost little of its charm over the years. I honestly believe somebody watching this film for the first time would enjoy it just as much as its original audience.
Dorothy is a simple innocent girl and that's what warms us to her, and this helps us to identify with her. In addition the additional characters in the film have their own unique charms. But each one of them has enough quality for us to believe in them.
The conversion from the original book to this film is done excellently the actors that were chosen to play each part were just amazing. Maybe for people today the visual adaptation does show its age, but I for one don't care it shows thought about set design maybe missing in today's blue screen studios.
There are more recent adaptations of this film but in all honesty this one is still my favourite.
Labyrinth (1986)
Jim Henson Classic
I can't believe its been 30 years since this film was released. A little girl is forced to grow up very quickly when her little brother is taken and at risk of being turned into a Goblin, but the sets made (by M.C. Escher), the puppets (from Jim Henson) the romance between Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) and the Goblin King (David Bowie), was just magical.
A modern day version of this film would just have used CGI but its nostalgic and wonderful to see real puppets in action in a kids film. I am sure any child of the time imagined themselves running around in that maze avoiding the challenges set and having such companions as Hoggle, Ludo and Ambrocious (that last name makes me think of Ambrosia Rice Pudding for some reason). David Bowie as the Goblin King though, I'm sure he had all the girls falling at his feet he had power, mystery and I guess for the ladies looks.
Labyinth is just a truly magical film a fairytale with puppets and actors instead of animation or CGI. All I can say is RIP Jim Henson, you and your puppets are truly missed, they brought to life many a legend of film and television drama.
