I have seen home videos that were better

First, how egotistical for the filmmaker to not only offer a review, but to question a review of a viewer! If you put stuff out there, expect people to have opinions, and the mere fact he chose to 10 star this movie and call out a reviewer leads me to believe the movie actually would score much lower by viewers and have more reviews if it weren't for the brashness of Phillipe Mora.

As viewers there is no depth to this at all, and with a description discussing the looting, and reparations he could have at least mentioned that in his movie, especially if advertises that that is what the movie is about.

In the end, the movie tends to be one man's ranting about not much and a show f his Hitler obsession.

Simply one of the best love stories-- and not just gay stories I have seen.

I am a bit of a hard ash when it comes to rating and reviewing movies, and this movie hit all of the marks for me. It was sublime, and had me literally sobbing toward the end.

Being from America, I was not familiar with the book or the story, and in fact, only got the movie because of the cover art. I wasn't really looking for a movie that dealt with the early days of HIV/AIDS, and in fact, tend to steer clear of them because they are usually done so poorly, but HTM deals with it not only realistically, but with great humanity. In the end, the movie isn't about the disease, but the love these two men shared.

And what a love it must have been. Most of us could only ever hope for a love like that, and never actually find it. In that regard, it reminds me of Bridegroom. Both of those films leave you with the hope that fairy tale love really can exist in the real world.

Had such high hopes...

Warning: Spoilers
I had looked forward to seeing this movie for months-- ever since I heard about it this Spring. I finally was able to get my hand on a copy over the weekend and had a very hard time on the number of stars to give it. The story was contrived, but the lead actors seemed to overcome a rather weak script. It is billed as "uproariously funny" but neither me or my husband ever even chuckled. If you are going to tell stories involving men delivering toilet babies, and later an at-home birth in an inflatable pool, some thought should go into the actual mechanical difference of the male and female bodies. Sitting on a toilet makes "some sense" if you can wrap your head around the idea of a baby coming from your colon, but sitting on your derrière in a pool of water would pretty much make it impossible for a "baby" to come out. There were lots of laughs that were left unsaid. This movie was much more a romantic-drama and not really a comedy at all-- until the credits when they go for the cheap laughs of having a white bear portraying a ghetto-queen. Watch it for the acting, not the comedy or the story.

Two words

Thashana McQuiston. Absolutely the best performance I have seen in a movie in a LOOOONG time! Every single time she appears she steals the show. The lead has an uncanny resemblance to Adam Levine, and it was driving me crazy to try and keep my mind from jumping into Levine mode. Jared Allman had such a quiet but manly sexuality that just exudes into your being, that you can't help but feel it. It is always refreshing to see a man that happens to be attracted to men portrayed. The writer and director and star has obvious talents, but was definitely overshadowed by his two supporting actors, and was smart enough to let them! Smartest move made with the production was allowing those talents to shine. The Will and Grace "listening at the vent" storyline quickly was overcome by the supporting characters ability to transcend the gimmick the movie was predicated on.
