AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007)
Just plain bad
Two of Fox's biggest franchise's ruined for a quick buck. This film had the opportunity to correct the mess that was the first AVP film but it failed, totally changing the already established mythos, an alien hybrid that can implant embryos into victims without the need for a queen? What gives? Honestly if you are going to combine two franchises at least take the time to thrash out an interesting story that firstly does justice to the two franchises you are combining and secondly does justice to the fans, don't just combine them for the sake of the final confrontation (much like the Freddy v Jason film)without having a fitting storyline. Most of this film takes place in dimly lit places so you can't see the aliens or the predator that much, and the final battle scene between the Predalien and the Predator sucks too, just avoid this at all costs and watch Alien, Aliens, then Predator 1 & 2.
Lake Placid 2 (2007)
Lake Placid is Putrid Definitely one of the worst sequels ever
This is just a bad movie period. From bad CGI crocodiles to rehashed storyline and characters, only this time it's not just one but four crocodiles Even when the film makers use model alligators they look fake (think Jaws 3 when the shark is swimming upwards towards you). I guess the only redeeming features of this crap fest are Cloris Leachman who in the end gets what you are all expecting and one of the original Dukes of Hazard. There's even a CGI plane that mysteriously disappears from the dock only to appear again later. Save your money re-watch the far superior original or if you really have to rent, rent Alligator or Jaws instead.
Mission: Impossible III (2006)
The Best Of The Series So Far
Not being a big fan of the first film, and only mildly enjoying the second film (I worked on it so much of the enjoyment was gone) I found this MI film to be undoubtedly the best of the series so far, although it would be good if the recurring theme of traitor agents was finally let go of. While the twists are sometimes predictable, this movie was action packed. The stunts were eye popping and the action fast,The story was fast paced and not as convoluted as the previous two.I really can't understand why it wasn't as successful as hoped, I mean the couch jumping incident aside Tom Cruise is a gifted actor and a fan favourite I don't see why his personal quirks should've affected his box office. All in all an enjoyable couple of hours.Much better than War Of the Worlds I think
Bewitched (2005)
Another classic TV Show ruined by a remake when will Hollywood Learn
This is movie is so bad it should never have been made, the script is woeful,it is merely using the name of the much beloved classic TV show and cashing in on it!And the result was a colossal flop.It didn't matter how good the script was for this movie it was never ever going to be as good as the early seasons of this show. The potential was there imagine Larry Tate or Mrs Kravitz finally learning that Sam was a witch or Darrin's parents learning the truth after all theses years, lesson to film studios if a formula isn't broken don't try to fix it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I think the only thing in this movie that came anywhere near the original series was Steve Carrell as Uncle Arthur, which though being good still made absolutely no sense at all.
Kickboxer 2: The Road Back (1991)
Once in a lifetime a movie comes along that changes your life.............
...........sadly this film is not it.While I admit to watching this film several times,I really think that like most sequels to stand alone movies it suffers from lack of a good plot device, when the main character of the first movie is conveniently disposed of in flash back and quite easily at that and a new hero is introduced as a previously unmentioned brother you know that you are in trouble. I really enjoyed the first film I thought it was great, definitely one of Van Dammes best, and I wonder how this would've been had he returned for it but alas he wasn't offered enough money and passed on it. Sasha Mitchell came in as the lead and went for 3 films until his character was unceremoniously dumped at the start of Kickboxer 5 Redemption in much the same manner as Van Dammes was in this one.Sasha tries hard and isn't too bad its just the script let's him down. Peter Boyle must've needed the paycheque and Michael Qissi ( Van Dammes real life good mate) return's as Tong Po the Thai Kickboxing champion. Its not a bad way to waste n hour and a half of your life but its an hour and a half you could be wasting re-watching the original Kickboxer
Highlander II: The Quickening (1991)
The Turkey of The Universe!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the worst sequel in movie history (I also said that for Jaws The Revenge and The Crow:City Of Angels I can't decide which one I hate the most)Not even Sean Connery can save this turkey!!!Sure it had problems with the insurance company etc but how could anyone think that a movie that totally rewrites the history of the characters would make money this is bad plain and simple I can't think of one nice thing to say about it oh wait yes I can Michael Ironside is in it and as always he plays a great tough guy role.Thats it the only redeeming feature of this stinker.Avoid it at all costs,The Renegade version is only a little better but makes the story incoherent
Jaws: The Revenge (1987)
Even the shark didn't have the stomach for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You know a film franchise is in serious trouble if the box office returns are dwindling fast and the only actress left from the first movie is the studio bosses wife!!! Even Michael Caine hasn't seen this film and he starred in it!!! To quote the actor himself "I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific.".With a glowing recommendation like that this is a must see movie!!! NOT!!!! The plot is crap a shark out for revenge?I think not!A shark that explodes with the same recycled shot of it sinking after it collides with the bow of a boat after standing still on the water? Please give me a break!!!! This is one of the worst if not the worst sequel that I have ever seen in my life and I've seen a few.BAD BAD BAD. Even the shark is falling apart.Stay away from this one,oh thats right everybody did!!!!
Superman Returns (2006)
Superman Returns Could've Waited
I saw this film with anticipation to see where the Franchise would go and see if it would recapture the magic of the first two films and hopefully rival the great Spiderman films.Alas I was disappointed with the final product, although it was a lot better than Supermans 3 & 4 it just lacked something.Oh that's it ACTION! When I see a Super Hero film I want action, and lots of it,and apart from the plane and space shuttle scene which IMHO was the best scene in the movie there wasn't much of it.I suppose after years of having the SUPERMAN LIVES script being so close to being made that the studio must've insisted that Supes died and then was resurrected. The plot was just bad bad bad a rehash of Superman 1 in plot except for the kid sub plot, I just hope that the sequel is much better and not as rushed as this was with action etc the things we come to expect now days.I hope Bryan Singer can do it I really hope he can because I know its always hard with an origin film or re introducing a character so it was always going to be a difficult job for that alone, but now it's out of the way let's hope it goes on to greater things and lives up to its potential. Brandon Routh does play the dual parts well, and lets hope he can escape the dreaded "CURSE" of Superman.Let's hope the sequels much much better
Superman III (1983)
Superman III suffers from an Identity Crisis
When I look back at this film I truly think that a grave injustice was done with DCs biggest hero.Imagine what this film series would've been like under the direction of Richard Donner?I shudder to think what the Spiderman films will be like without Sam Raimi. By now we all know about the Superman II director swap etc so I won't go into that only to say I can't wait to see the Donner version of Superman II when its finally released. Now let's get into Superman 3.It doesn't know whether to be a comedy (the slapstick opening sequence) or a serious action film (the chemical plant)the inclusion of the late Richard Pryor doesn't help either and while I am a fan of Pryors work I think he's out of place in this film it's not that he doesn't put in a good performance its just that this film was not the right vehicle to showcase his talents. Like many previous reviewers have said this film sorely lacks the presence of a strong villain and you wonder what it would've been had Hackman returned as Lex Luthor and the character of Lois Lane had returned longer than a 5 minute cameo, even if they had recast the role it would've been better.Don't get me wrong Lana Lang is a big part of the Superman mythos and deserves to be in the film series somewhere.I don't know I just think that the producers and studios thinking people would go see this film no matter what decided to rush it through development. The film does have its good points though. Christopher Reeve will always be Superman to me(although George Reeves is also great in the role)and once again puts in a great performance despite a poor script. The Superman turned bad plot showed some promise and the whole Smallville thing was good,it shows the contrasts between Clark and Supes,Lois loves Superman Lana loves Clark. Its still an enjoyable flick to pass the time and well worth the watch.
Silverado (1985)
Silverado....Its a hell of a ride!!!!
Picture this, the year is 1985,western movies hadn't been popular with mainstream audiences for some time and we got not 1 but 2 decent western flicks, the first Pale Rider with Clint Eastwood a fore runner to his Oscar winning Unforgiven and Silverado. Silverado is a great piece of entertainment, with an all star cast,(who'd of thought John Cleese as an old west sheriff?)Kevin Cline is excellent as always,as is Danny Glover in one of the first westerns I've ever seen (except Blazing Saddles) to have an afro American as a main character,Kevin Costner is great in this film as is Scott Glenn and Brian Dennehy as always gives a great performance as the corrupt sheriff and former saddle mate of Kevin Klines character. If any movie deserves a sequel then it is this one,if the more undeserving Hollywood films can get one then why not this one? 20 years later and Silverado is thriving, Kevin Klines character has kept the peace when James Woods rides into town seeking revenge for his brothers death 20 years earlier it'd be great
Stone (1974)
A Great Aussie Cult Film
What a great little Aussie film, and one of the first Aussie films to be ripped off and unsuccessfully remade by the US studios as STONE COLD. This film had it all, political assassinations, nudity, great action scenes, world class stunts, great scenery. While not in the same league as the later Mad Max films it still showcases an early Australian film industry which would prove later to be one of the best in the world. Some of the stars, stuntmen and film crew went on to bigger and better things, while others faded into obscurity but the film itself remains an ICON to Australian bike clubs and a classic Australian film.Get hold of copy if you can and sit back for an early example of Australian film making at its best!
An Innocent Man (1989)
A Great Selleck Flick
This little under rated gem is a great flick.Witness the transformation of Tom Selleck from all round nice guy to bad ass dude as his life is turned upside down by two corrupt cops who make a mistake on a bust. This is a very enjoyable flick and well worth a look its definitely one of Sellecks better films and seriously deserved better treatment at the cinemas than what it did.If you've got nothing better to do on a rainy afternoon then this is highly recommended viewing, its not "The Shawshank Redemption",which is my favourite jail film,or even "The Green Mile" but it is still a great little film and a great time filler.Sometimes I wonder what Sellecks career would've been like had he of made a little film called "Raiders of The Lost Ark" perhaps his film career would've gone through the roof,he definitely deserves a better film career than what he had.
The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005)
Say A Prayer That This Is The Last One!This Franchise is DEAD!!!
The original film was a well crafted masterpiece,a fitting legacy for the late Brandon Lee.Then there's this, what can I say?Just re-watch the original. It would save you money and at least you wouldn't waste your time. And then you'd also send the studio a message that no more sequels are required. The second one, "Angels" was so bad I got about half way through it and to this day still haven't seen the last half of it, "Salvation" was a BIG improvement but still lame. This is one franchise that should never have continued. And hopefully after this stinker the producers will let it rest.Edward Furlong needs a hit, unfortunately this straight to DVD crap-fest isn't it,he looks about as menacing as the shark in Jaws:The Revenge!
3 Men and a Little Lady (1990)
Great Sequel To A Great Film Doesn't Disappoint
This is one of the rare instances when the sequel stands up or is better than the first film, most sequels are rehashed or pale in comparison to the original, this one will not disappoint!
This film and the original are two of my favourites and I think perhaps its time for a third entry in the series I'd love to see Guttenberg,Danson and Sellick back to see how the characters lives have progressed. It'd be great if done properly and let's face it the stars careers could probably do with a boost.
The storyline is pretty good and the humour is very good,I don't want to give too much away,so I won't just get the movie and the original and watch them both, make a night of it.
Road Warriors: The Life and Death of Wrestling's Most Dominant Tag Team (2005)
What a Rush!!!!!!!!! The Best Tag Team Ever!!!!
The most successful tag team ever, Hawk and Animal,The Road Warriors aka Legion Of Doom aka L.O.D.This is DVD essential viewing for any wrestling fan. L.O.D were the tag team that inspired many imitators including Powers Of Pain and most notably Demolition(a team that consisted of their training partners) This DVD tells the story of how Hawk and Animal grew up together, trained together, worked together and made the big time together. My biggest gripe with this DVD is that it doesn't show enough of their feud with their biggest imitators DEMOLITION, which was one of my all time favorite tag teams ever, (right behind L.O.D and the Hart Foundation)It would've been great to see the match between all three members of Demolition and LOD with the Ultimate Warrior or the feud against Earthquake and Tugboat RIP HAWK!!!
Revenge of the Nerds IV: Nerds in Love (1994)
Nerds IV:Nerds In Love.
Just finished watching this film and I think it's going to be extremely hard to replace Curtis Armstrong as Booger when they remake the original.
It was a big improvement over Nerds III, and I think a lot better than Nerds in Paradise.
One of the downsides for me was seeing OGRE as a watered down version of his old self he even gets picked up by two guys and thrown onto the table during the food fight scene! It was obviously easy cash for Donald Gibb the actor who has since made a beer named after his character from these films, and hey good on him if they threw money at me just to cruise through a film with hardly anything to do but be there I'd take it too!
Booger married?Who wouldve thought it? Live on the Nerds, its really not as bad a movie as some previous reviewers think.Fans of the series will definitely appreciate it more than anyone else
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
The Best Bond Film Ever
Let's start by saying that people either love or hate this movie but to me it is the best and most believable Bond film of the series, especially in light of some of the most recent offerings in the series. The reasons I say this are the movie stuck very very closely to the original book,Bond depended more on his own skills than gadgets and weaponry to overcome obstacles and opponents and it humanised the character. Lazenby was great as Bond certainly better than most critic's think (and I think most critics are paid to be negative anyway) and it would've been great if he would have played the role a few more times (as by now everyone knows he regrets not doing!)Had he have stayed in the role it would've prolonged the dumbing down of the character as played by Roger Moore in the later 70s & 80s films. Telly Savalas was a great villain and the scenery was excellent. The ending was superb and it would've been great to see Lazenby play Bond in the next film seeking his revenge against Blofeld. I don't know maybe I'm alone on this but I think the two best Bonds were Lazenby and Dalton but perhaps it was because of the stories that they were in
