The Imitation Game (2014)
A great view at the origins of our computer based society
In an age where my calculator has more processing power than the Apollo mission's computer system it becomes hard to imagine the origins of our modern computer systems. This movie does a phenomenal job of showing the intense thought and dedication that the Turing and his team go through as they try to break the Enigma Cipher. Since the movie is based on a true story it is easier to relate to the characters stories and what they are going through emotionally during their struggle. The story is very thought provoking because of how important computers are in our society, so thinking about the origin is wonderful. While watching this movie just think about all of the inventions and concepts that came out of this one concept, the modern computer, and the story becomes even more amazing.Whether you are an expert coder that has studied Turing and the Enigma machine or just like movies this is a great movie to watch.
Interstellar (2014)
Phenomenal take on the issues plaguing deep space travel
This movie does a great job of exploring the possibilities of deep space travel including the difficulties with relativity and interstellar objects such as black holes. The main obstacles that the protagonists face are ones that plague modern physicist, showing in an understandable way why we have not traveled deep into space thus far. While not everything is entirely believable in the plot the concepts are also not unbelievable because of the unknowns within the universe of physics. If you have any interest in physics, or even if you do not, this movie is a great way to get introduced to the concepts that many physicist are working with right now. I would definitely watch this with someone that will be willing to talk to you about the ideas afterword because of how though provoking it is.
Los últimos días (2013)
A rose among thorns
Apocalyptic movies are some of the most overdone, repetitive, and terrible movies that keep being created, and that is coming from a huge fan of the genre. Unlike most other apocalypse style movies "The Last Days" pulls out new a creative conflict that is not often considered instead of using one of the vanilla end of the world scenarios. "The Last Days" does a phenomenal job of creating relatable and believable human conflict that drives the characters to make decisions that in turn drive the story. The mixture of successes and failures experienced by the characters blends beautifully into the story and leaves you feeling the same emotions as the protagonist. With that in mind the special effects are not great but are not used enough to degrade the story at all. A must watch for any apocalypse fan.
Parallels (2015)
A sturdy foundation
If you watch this movie in the hopes of seeing a good standalone you will be disappointed in the results, however with the idea in mind that there is/was meant to be more (who knows where Fox will go with this) the "pilot" would definitely keep you interested in the upcoming series. Since this is currently the only part of the potentially series available it is a bit open ended and if you are not looking for that kind of movie wait until another piece or two is released. The concept is intriguing and allows for an infinite amount of stories to be formed throughout a series, and I personally hope that Fox decides to make this into a series instead of there initial decision to make only this movie.
