Paranormal Activity 4 (2012)
Scary. Not scary. It depends!
Like the first Paranormal Activity, this movie is largely suggestive instead of implicit with creepiness. The performances given by the actors are not very believable. This movie both expands on the Paranormal Activity myths and provides a genuinely scary experience, but in the end lacks the final kick. So many horror movies these days either mistake gross for scary (Drag Me to Hell) or are uneventful/predictable with characters no one would care about (The Strangers, White Noise 1/2, The Eye, Shutter, etc.). The Paranormal Activity movies first started to stand out but now proved to be the same way boring.
Most people dislike the Paranormal Activity films, but I think it's likely because they've become desensitized to good horror by all the tripe that constantly comes out undeservedly under the "horror" name these days. That makes it difficult today to find any movie at all that scares you. This is not an apology for this film, but keeping this in mind PA4 is still a movie you can watch.
Profile of Fear (2011)
Superb story, great directing, fair acting, mediocre camera
Andrew is a guy who has pretty much everything. But since his life appears shallow, he decides to enter a police school in London and mess with his uber-father. He just has to prove to himself that he can achieve something on his own - and seems to fail.
This is the startup situation with Profile of Fear, a small, unpolished marvel that I've recently stumbled upon on Fetch TV. While Andrew is on a desperate mission to show that an old case he is confronted with has some nagging questions left, he slowly drifts into a world of chaos and desperation.
It is hard to tell what fascinated me about Andrew. I do not really LIKE this character, nor do I understand every single step he makes. But his desperation, his struggle with his environment, seems surprisingly real and familiar. At least to me. It is a very, very strange feeling of being a soul mate. Strange and fascinating. This fact alone makes this movie a strong recommendation.
