The Tree (2010)
A "woman movie" at its worst
Look at the credits of this movie and you know it all. This movie was exclusively made by woman and this can be seen from minute one. There are so many cheesy scenes and so much irrational behavior that you can almost see the crew behind the camera sticking together crying their eyes out about what a touchy movie they are making.
I am sorry. It is not working that way.
The story is fine at its trunk, but when we get to the leafs it stinks - the kid's character excepted.
Could have been a nice film if it either would contain some more fairy tale elements or some more reality in terms of male thinking.
Profile of Fear (2011)
Cheap and nasty? Hell yes, and great!
I just watched this flick on amazon.com VOD and was stunned! The only reason I stumbled upon it was, because my girl friend used to be a huge fan of Lee Baxter's Caught In The Act. I didn't waste a single minute of my life time: The movie starts with a weird animation clip that continues throughout the film and tells a totally different story about a guy who has a problem dealing with his fears. Then the story changes to the main character: A guy called Andy (played quite well by Lee Baxter), who comes from a very rich family, is more than unhappy with his life - despite all the wealth he enjoys. He thinks he could escape the numbness he experiences by joining a police education program. But he soon has to realize that this is depriving him of even more happiness, since the people at school do not seem to support him very much.
The story ends quite shockingly (though not too bloody, don't worry) and offers a couple of bone chilling surprises.
Profile of Fear seems to be cheaply made from time to time, though I'm not sure if this is on purpose (rack focus, noisy image). The story and overall directing is brilliant, though! Profile of Fear really grabbed me at the end and my girl fried was crying like hell.
I also recommend Jane Voosen, the female lead, who plays the main character's foreign girl friend. She delivers a great performance.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
B-movie with a nice story ruined by incompetent directing, acting
I don't really know what is more shocking for me: To see so many reviews here rating NARNIA 10 that I just can't resist to think that the studio/producer invested a considerable amount of money to write fake comments - or how it could happen that a major Hollywood studio proves itself again to be too amateurish to produce a decent movie with a solid story, fair acting, and competent directing.
Don't let many of this reviews here fool you: Narnia is dilettantish to the max. By no means it can compete with HARRY POTTER or the LORD OF THE RINGS - and I am not complaining about the shallow story. It is incredible bad directing (just one example: The two girls get ambushed by wolves. You'll see the wolf two meters away from them. Next scene: Both girls sit screaming on top of a tree. Question: HOW DID THEY GET THERE WITHOUT BEING SHREDDED TO UGLY PIECES IN THE FIRST PLACE?), it is bad acting, TV-budget special effects, but even worse: a simple, boring, predictable story. The only thing NOT predictable is the hair-rising illogicalness of, well, pretty much everything. How come the "good" warriors trust a boy with NO military skills AT ALL to lead them into battle? O god, the flaws of this movie are so countless, it makes movies like DUNGEONS & DRAGONS a Shakespearean masterpiece.
If you want to see a very, very simple fairy tale story suitable for your eight year old kids, go and watch it. If you don't like to get insulted by bad film-making - avoid it.
I can only shake my head. What a bad movie!
