Highston (2015)
quirky fun
Whoever cast and directed this pilot is a genius. Every single one of the characters is spot on perfect for the part, and they each play their roles like they've been leading up to them their whole lives. Highly entertaining without hitting you over the head with stupid lines that are supposed to be funny. No canned laughter or slapstick crap. Just clever scenes and dialogue with likable characters that you'll wish you could binge watch. I really hope this gets picked up to series. It's so much better than most of what's out there now. The lead is a new actor I'm not familiar with...very likable. Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers is a kick in the pants. Shaq is, to be honest, a guy I don't usually care to watch. Most of his stuff is self aggrandizing and boring. But he obviously loves this role, and doesn't mind embarrassing himself to be the epitome of a big, lumbering lovable teddy bear. The other primary roles are played by comedy veterans whose faces will be familiar and whose acting is a treat to watch. Nothing is overdone, and the show never resorts to cheap stunts or vulgarities to get a laugh. Excellent!
Glitch (2015)
Binge worthy
Super easy to binge watch this series, then find yourself yearning for season 2.
If I based my rating just on the acting, this series would absolutely rate higher than 8 out of ten. But I'm torn on how I feel about the basic plot, as the ability to suspend disbelief is severely tested by the sheer impossibility of the main premise...the dead and buried coming back to life in perfect health. Some of them after more than a century. This show is not presented as a fantasy series, such as "Supernatural", but more as a real world drama, so it's a little difficult to reconcile. But hell, it's television, not biology class, so I recommend ignoring the science and simply enjoying the show.
A couple of scenes will stick with you, scenes where the characters are fully exposed as human beings whose lives have been shattered by this phenomenon. Kudos to the director and the actors.
I'm not sure why the Aussies are so much better at this than European directors/actors, but it's clear they have it in spades...whatever IT is.
Lastly, I am pleased to add that it's super easy to follow the dialogue, despite the accents. I really hate having to mentally decipher dialogue because the accents are so thick you can't understand what the actors are saying right off. It kills the flow...and all entertainment value. Not so with this series, thank goodness.
Highly recommended!
Lucy (2014)
Top 10%
This movie has it all, but on top of the list is the director's masterful touches and Scarlett J's incredible acting abilities.
You only need the first few scenes to get the idea that you're in the presence of greatness.
Despite the nitpicky science nerds inane barbs, I found the entire movie gripping and engaging.
Be prepared to go without bathroom and munchies breaks for the entire length of the movie...I kid you not.
I have watched it three times...a rare thing...and will undoubtedly watch it again.
Two thumbs up!
American Ultra (2015)
Fun!
Fun, highly entertaining movie.
If you aren't just watching this just because Kristen Stewart is hot, you may be pleasantly surprised by how entertaining and clever the story and dialogue are. If you are, well, sorry, there's no T&A. (But honestly, she's still hot.) Every once in a while, a movie comes out that impresses, not because it does everything right, but because it takes risks and finds ways to connect with the audience that are unorthodox, but somehow work.
My other criteria for a "fun" movie is the question of whether I'd want to see it again. Movies that depend on a gimmick or major twist DO NOT fall within this category.
There's a little blood, but for you squeamish types, it's quick and relatively painless.
Watch it with someone you love. lol
