Doctor Sleep (2019)

Doctor Sleep is a worthy adapation
3 October 2023
I read the novel. This movie was far better than it deserves. Perfect casting with McGregor and Ferguson. I wouldn't say this is outright scary but has some very intense moments that can leave the viewer unnerved. The intensity pitters out by the end, which is unfortunate.

It's a fully fleshed out story with several character arcs for the main players but the edit could've been tighter. If you're even a little tired, Doctor Sleep may put you to sleep. However, if you're fan of The Shining movie, Shining TV mini-series, or just the books, you'll enjoy this film.

It truly is a worthy diamond among so much crap Hollywood typically puts out nowadays. Doctor Sleep just wants to continue Danny Torrance's story with no hidden social or political agenda. How can you not appreciate that!

Friend until the predictable end
16 February 2023
I went in with low expectations so maybe that's why I found it so enjoyable. The climax and ending are predictable, but the acting is generally universally good across the board.

While the opening is a bit clunky, like necessary but not wanted exposition to setup rest of the film, I was genuinely impressed with how seamless M3GAN the character was portrayed between (what I assume was static, animatronic and real-life visages). It's certainly a rehashed Chucky movie if not slightly more believable given today's robots being created and advanced AI. (Boston Dynamics anyone?)

The movie doesn't wear out its welcome with generally brisk pacing with the edit and story beats. I actually do look forward to the sequel. The child actor who is M3GAN does a wonderful job.

That '90s Show (2023– )

Disappointing on so many levels
4 February 2023
Netflix produced this strictly to grab some nostalgia viewership from the millenials and gen-x. The only thing worse than its writing -- which is not funny by any stretch of reality -- is the acting. You know the show is in trouble when they throw just about every one of the original That 70s Show cast in for some type of cameo by episode 2.

The new kid cast have no chemistry at all and feels like their reading lines from a cue card off screen. Every one of the main cast feels so milk toast and bland, I can't possibly dream on how they were the best ones from auditions.

Avoid this show at all costs. Maybe watch Velma instead. Being vehemently disgusted by a cartoon teenage squad is probably more entertaining than watching paint dry with these teens.

Well Acted. Very Contrived
1 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm conflicted. The acting is universally great, but Kerry's "Mia" character has to be one of the most self-serving, manipulative, and unsympathetic character I've seen on TV in a long time. ((Of course, I could only stomach two episodes of The Handmaid's Tale, but that's a whole other gripe.)

The story is so contrived, especially with the whole Elena's sister adopts illegal Chinese baby whose birth mother is friends with Mia who's working for Elena. Give me a break.

But like I said, the acting is universally great however Washington's three-note performance gets a little tiring. Maybe the problem is the source material. I've never read the novel(s) but the apple can't be far from the tree.

If Mia was intended to be the one we as the audience were suppose to root for, the show creators failed horribly.

Forcing myself to finish the series, I'm dropping my rating.

I will add this could be called "Little Fires Everywhere, aka White People Bad." I think the series must've had Robin whats-her face as a consultant.

It's kind of sad that Reece is type-casting herself as simply a different shade of her "Big Little Lies" character.

The fact this series has garnered so many awards/honor is laughable. Tells us how out of touch Hollywood really is.

Propoganda Puff Piece
17 August 2022
To be fair, I absolutely despise this woman, and didn't get past the first episode. But this is completely a last ditch effort to rewrite a historically tarnished narrative about someone who has a naturally deplorable demeanor.

Can't win the presidency? Fund your own puff piece to create a better final impression to the general public.

Sad and Shocking
2 August 2022
Just how far has society fallen? This is an eye-opening documentary about how pervasive the destructive gender ideology has not only infiltrated certain disciplines but infected the minds of todays youth. How so many segments of today's western society can be so woefully ignorant and detached from basic reality is mind boggling.

Watch the trailer
3 March 2022
Just watch the trailer, it's shorter and way more entertaining - then you won't be disappointed. Story makes no sense and or holds any world logic... the film just does things because they want to without any basis.

Unleashing the Nostalgia Along with Ghosts
12 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a major nostalgia fish-out-of-water trip, with state of the art VFX and nothing original story beats.

Fine to see once, not sure it was worth the cost we spent seeing it in a theater.

Given a certain actor's reputation, I was honestly surprised to see him show up and actually give a performance... probably the highlight -- but then again it's just more nostalgia.

Tenet (2020)
4/10
Huh? What a waste of money and time.
24 December 2020
After sitting through the plodding, convoluted, incomprehensible plot of Tenet, the only thing I got from this is why Warner Bros. Pictures is still handing over fat bank rolls to Christopher Nolan.

No emotional depth, no logic to when an object or person starts going inverted and why other times they don't. It's like #Inception, only you can't follow the story at all and don't really care when it's over. Both are filled with his trademark handicap of stilted, overstuffed exposition, but at least Inception had some thrilling set pieces and was a story you could follow. Tenet's exposition made no sense and the visual example of the movie rules only further muddled the audience's understanding of the subject matter.

The "this guy is fighting backwards" and "these bullets are returning to the gun" gets real old real fast. It's a flash in the pan idea that holds no weight or lasting resonance.

Kudos to the actors who did as good of a job as they could given the material. Maybe if the movie didn't have such a bloated running time, it may have been more enjoyable... at least I wouldn't have felt like so much time was wasted.

Stay Away
27 December 2018
Stay away, stay far away. This movie is a complete waste of celluloid. (As if they actually USED film stock.) Slow, pointless, ridiculous. Why do such crap movies get so much festival hype? I don't understand it.

Wrong on so many levels
16 December 2018
The hypocrites of Hollywood make another trashy movie . This is worthless on so many levels. I feel bad for all the talent that helped make it such a great looking film for such a pathetic, tasteless script.

The Crimes of Rowling and Warner Bros.
18 November 2018
(This review comes from a long-time HP book and film fan -- Films 3, 4, and 6 being my favorite.) This really should be called the crimes of J. K. Rowling. Or the crimes of Warner Bros.. Yet another IP franchise that is quickly destroying the love moviegoers felt for the original series by not leaving well enough alone.

Despite reading all the, what are confirmed to be, pin point reviews to lower my expectations; I found myself falling quickly in a dismal state of boredom and cluelessness to a story that really makes very little sense nor has the ability to give us a fulfilling movie on its own merit. A vapid and soulless mess of a bunch of characters I could really care less in what happens to them.

The magic has left this wizarding world, and I foresee no possible way of it returning.

Hollywood's relentless fear of not taking a chance on new scripts yet relying on the tried-and-true - squeezing every last drop of potential money from its franchises -- has become increasingly ridiculous.

Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter... who's next to leave a lasting bitter taste in our collective consciousness for films that we used to cherish? Marvel?

"C-" I would've scored it lower but the visuals and acting we're still very good - I just didn't care.

The worst thing of all is that they'll be making another one.

Great Acting, So-So Story
18 November 2018
I'm a fan of David Tennant, so I can't complain, even if it seems he's a bit typecasted for the bad guy lately. This was all around solid acting film with some dumb choices and a little too convenient plot twists.

Secret Gem of a Cinematic Documentary
30 October 2018
Ok it's not REALLY a documentary, but there's so much interview footage of the actual participants it kind of feels like one. This was such a better film than I had expected. A compelling story told in a compelling, unique manner. Thanks to Redbox reviews, I gave it a try and was so pleasantly surprised.
