The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
Got me into the show
Honestly had no interest in another apocalypse show, but seeing the buzz/outrage over this episode made me curious. I've not seen Offerman in anything since Ron Swanson, and I was absolutely floored by his performance. Finding the hope in a world of despair, love when you're not in the prime of your life...the strawberries. I can't remember the last time I got this emotionally invested in an episode of television, and adding in that these were completely new characters to me? It was poignant and perfect. A beautiful, touching story in its own right, and it made me want to continue watching the show.
Supernatural: Something Wicked (2006)
John Winchester, MOTS
Rewatching the series from the beginning, and it's amazing to see Dean's character develop in these early episodes, knowing what we know of the rest of the show. Jensen Ackles gives such a beautiful performance here, nuanced with so many layers of emotion (guilt, love, regret, longing).
And holy moly, John Winchester...maybe the real monster of the week was the one we were searching for all season.
Single All the Way (2021)
Tropes galore!
A negative reviewer complained about the cliches in this movie, but that's honestly part of its charm for me. This will be going on my must-watch Christmas list from here to eternity. It's sweet and silly exactly the sort of movie to enjoy during the holidays. I'd happily watch a sequel or three.
Leverage: Redemption: The Great Train Job (2021)
Getting better and better
The second half of this season just keeps getting better and better! I love how the show is incorporating queer relationships without making it into A Very Special Episode sort of thing. And the way Harry is finding his footing with the crew (family) is lovely.
I hope we get more seasons!
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
Bonkers and queer fun
I love how Tom Hardy, and now Andy Serkis, has leaned in to the playful dynamic between Eddie and Venom to create something fun. Not every comic adaptation needs to be grimdark and edgy to be entertaining. I will gladly watch as many sequels as they want to create.
What We Do in the Shadows: The Portrait (2021)
The best episode yet
This episode surprised me in so many ways. It was more intense and emotional than I've come to expect from this irreverent comedy, but that intensity comes about organically from tensions that have been building up all season, like Nandor's depression and increasing sense of disconnect and the chosen family motif.
Guillermo and Nandor's fight had me holding my breath (and yeah, not gonna lie, I would've been thrilled had it ended like that scene with Buffy and Spike bringing down a building. Yeah, I ship it.)
What hit me the hardest, though, was Laszlo - Matt Berry's performance in this and 3.09 brings such a poignant complexity to the affable character, and he had me tearing up twice in a matter of minutes.
And finally, the ending...THAT ENDING. Oh my lord! I cannot wait to see where the series goes in season 4, now that we have the whole crew scattered to the wind.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Lots of fun
Great combination of high energy action, emotional context, and funny. It was a great introduction to these characters. Looking forward to seeing them more!
Leverage: Redemption: The Paranormal Hacktivity Job (2021)
Spooktacular!
I felt the need to channel my inner Halloween nerd on this one. Even though I missed Eliot in this one, it was lots of fun to see the girls in action. Parker and Sophie being suspicious of each other early on, Breana's enthusiasm throughout...this one was a blast to watch! And I hope bloopers show the outtakes for that last scene.
Hannibal: Dolce (2015)
Breathtaking
This episode is visually stunning, as per usual, but beyond that, the gallery scene may be the most romantic thing hung I've ever seen on television.
