Obvious Political jab at Trump's Presidency
27 December 2021
Anyone who thinks this is just a humorous take on Social media and our obsession with celebrities' is missing what is really going on. You have a POTUS who is more obsessed with being popular than running the country effectively(remind you of Trump?) She even appoints her son-in-law( Jonah Hill) as her Chief of staff. Then you have the red hats, the subtle digs at Trump and his mishandling of Covid, except now its the meteor on a collision course with Earth. I'm sorry, yea its making some real valid points about how superficial we have become and how we believe whatever the media tells us but do you think given the company o liberal actors involved, that this wasn't made to poke fun at Trump and his followers? We aren't that naïve are we?

This Perry Mason Case is Lost..
10 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously, its only PM in name only. All the characters are not even close to what you thought. A Black man as Paul Drake I can handle but that would NEVER happen in 1930's racist America. Los Angeles was as racist as the South back then with Sundowner towns like Glendale and WHITES ONLY signs on Venice beach, so give it a break. Della Street as a Lesbian, hmm, okay maybe but in the v series she defintely gave off vibes that she was into men. Perry a boozer, a PI? Really? I could see if he was a just-out-of-Stanford Law School grad working for a grizzled Lawyer like John Lithgows character, and learns the ropes and gives us glimpses of the man he would become in his mid-life HOWEVER none of that even seems possible in this HBO adaption. It's a great period piece in terms of visuals and acting but the overall feel is just one case Perry Mason loses. Doubt anyone remembers this in 10 years.

Beautiful but Obvious attempt at PC
10 September 2021
I wanted, like everyone else who loved the original Perry Mason series, to like this modern re-creation of the iconic and first courtroom drama ever produced on TV. I wanted there to be some resemblance to the original characters, but alas, there hardly is any. Even Mason's younger version is a confused war-torn boozing shadow of the strong every-man post WW2 tough American with a grounded sense of right and wrong and values. Yes, he is a detective in this, he works for a lawyer and he interacts with many of the characters that were part of the TV series from the 1950's. But where I get stymied and somewhat dissapointed is that they remake the roles into something about TODAY. Yes, we need a Gay character(doesnt every show these days?), a black person(or else we hear it from BLM) to take a key role that would of been totally unreal in 1930's America. I'm only in episode 4 and I am so disgusted with it. Why does everything have to appear so PC now? Over-reaction by Hollywood for years of being too white? Is half of America Black?(last I checked its 12.7% of the total population but looks like half in most shows these days). Where is the realism in that? In any of this? Aside from all that, its a beautifully acted and dressed in the times its created. Thats about ll that kept me watching. Like so many other shows, 3-4 episodes is all I need to see the re-writing and political correctness at work and it just ruins it. Let things be what they are, not what you want them to be. Show Perry Mason for what he became because this version looks like he is headed for skid row.

True Gem of a movie!
22 May 2018
I agree with several other reviewers here who say that you probably need to be older to appreciate all that is going on in this fine movie. Having grown up thru the great years of Pacino and Walken and Arkin(who was not a lead usually but support as he is here), I truly enjoyed how each of these fine actors personality traits came thru in their characters without becoming cheesy sterotypes of themselves. Pacino was Pacino and Walken, well he's Walken! You get a fine dose of controlled crazyness from all 3. They were totally beleivable in thier roles as hitmen for the mob. Now that they are much older and ready for the rocking chairs, one last score has to be settled for the mob boss(the dude from Breaking Bad in the wheelchair and the bell who could talk!). This one last job will test their friendship and loyalty to the max. I wont say what it is because it's better to see everything for yourself. This movie is the kind of flick you can watch again and again over the years, share with similar older friends you grew up with and really appreciate. The funniest line in the movie(and there was a few) was when they opened the truck of the stolen car and foound a women naked and tied up. Pacino asks her how she got in there and she says "I am taking a vacation" and Walken says "what does that even mean?"! I am laughing now as I recall it. It shows the differences in the world and the gap between the younger and older generations and how we see and treat each other. It's a great moment. It was funny, nostalgic(no modern gadgets accept the car they stole including rotary phones were used) and drama and heartfelt drama about friendship and love. It was damn near perfect.

Romantic in the right way..
4 May 2018
If you bother to red thru the reviews, which I often do to attain different perspective on a movie, you might notice for Kate & Leopold, a considerable amount of trashing from women who despise the movie for being misogynistic. Not just a few but dozens of them! I saw it for what it was/is, a romantic comedy. In a time when the world is spinning for men and women, always working, stressed, deadlines, kids, etc, we forgot what true love and romance are. This movie reminds us. Pleasantly and with humor. I know that women hate the idea that they NEED a man to be fulfilled and happy, but in reality, they do. We all need that person. No one was trying to put women down, set them back or put them in their place. That wasn't or isn't the point of this movie. I am sure the current #metoo women out there Hate this movie, but that isn't its intention. It's about stepping back, taking a breather from our crazy life, and remembering that LOVE is the answer. What good is any of this if we can't share it. I have seen the movie 5-6 times over the years and love it every time, cry every time. I dont want to own a woman, and no one in this movie is acting like they do. All this man-hating, women's rights are being set-back is utter nonsense. It's a charming movie, and I would bet any amount of money, that even the most bitter woman out there, feels the same if she were honest.

Where are the real stars?
4 May 2018
What this movie lacks are REAL STARS. Kurt and Goldie were major stars when the original was made and they had great chemistry, (besides being a real life couple who are the parents of Kate Hudson)., and it showed on-screen. You can imagine the fights and arguments in the movie were so real-like because they had them in real life! All I can say is this is formula PC drivel, with the same ethnic jokes, same cultural differences that we have seen in comedies on tv and movies for years. Nothing new and because the "stars" are so forgettable, this remake will probably not be getting played for the next 30 years like the original that has become a comedy classic. When millenials do remakes, it's usually predictable and not really funny. Kind of like the fish taco from the food truck that millennials think is so great, waited an hour in line to get, paid DOUBLE, and the rest of us know it's the same old fish taco, just repackaged and doubled in price. When will the new Hollywood learn, STARS make movies. Original IDEAS are better than rehashed ones. Maybe the CGI is better, but it doesn't carry the movie., STARS and great writing does.

It's a Movie people, not a documentary! Get over yourselves!
21 July 2017
I enjoyed the movie and NO, I didn't know that the original family was Spanish or that the ball was actually Yellow BEFORE watching the movie but NOW I DO!(after reading a couple dozen reviews here) And I Still Loved it! So many PC and petty people (giving 1-2 star reviews) that take a political stance about how no tsunami warnings were given to the poorer countries that suffered the most, or that a WHITE family instead of the dark-skinned Spanish were portrayed. Who cares! The movie ultimately was made for an American and English speaking audience and with it costing almost 50M to make, why not take some artistic license to make sure it is an ATTRACTIVE movie for most audiences! I get it. The movie, even with it's flaws, still works! Watts gives an amazing performance and how she hasn't won an Oscar yet is beyond me! She is astounding in her dramatic range. Ewon is good not great, and the older son Lucas also does a great job being a kid forced to grow up real fast. The movie focused mainly on this one family although a couple of other victims, a female in the bed next to Naomi and a man who lost his family at the beach and loans Ewon his cell phone are brief but good scenes. Yea, all white Euro-Americans but like I said, the movie is for middle-America so you have to dolly things up for the masses to fork over 15 dollars a ticket!

I still give it 9 stars for the ultra-realistic tsunami scenes that look so real you think it's actual news footage but it is all original and Naomi Watts performance that despite it being a pretty simple story-line of tragedy and anguish, still rings with high emotion. The final scene of her looking out the window had me in tears.

The nitpicking PC crowd can keep on bashing but it is a good movie about a devastating natural disaster.

The man was simply a GENIUS
9 June 2017
Watched this very obscure but compelling movie made by the immortal Charlie Chaplin. A talkie, although he is widely more known for his silent movie career as the lovable hapless clown The Tramp. In this movie, he shows the man underneath the facade of the happy but ultimately sad clown. Slow at first but like a good novel, gradually brings you in as Chaplin masterfully lays the groundwork of background and character for a fuller appreciation which ultimately leaves you in awe of his enormous story-telling genius. Great cast, great dialogue(witty and philosophical at times), great great musical score(that Chaplin wrote and won an Oscar for 20 years later). Claire Bloom was perfectly cast as the suicidal ballerina that Chaplin saves and gives new hope too. Buster Keaton, Chaplin's comedic adversary all thru his silent career, makes a wonderful appearance at the end in a musical duet with Chaplin, a must-see. All in all, this movie was a sort of auto- biographical of both the Chaplin Tramp character he played to great success and his real life persona, which gradually suffered in contrast as cinema changed from silent to talking, black and white to color(movie is B&W) and his public disgracing as a Communist- sympathizer(untrue) in the early 1950's, when this movie was made but not released in America for that reason. It was finally released in 1972 and thus was awarded Best Oscar for the musical score, which strangely was one of the most popular instrumental songs of the 1950's!(it was called "'Eternally" on the pop-charts.) I highly recommend this masterpiece although it is a tough find. Try the torrent sites.

A gem of a movie!
5 June 2017
I must say I was drawn in by the stellar cast of A-list actors from Kathy Bates and Ovtavia Spencer and Glenn Close who I haven't seen much of the last 20 years. Did not know who the lead actress Sophie Nelisse was but she was outstanding too. It was a tear-jerker for sure, from about the mid-point to the end, I was in tears and at times almost choked up with emotion. I highly recommend this movie for any family to watch as it deals with many issues of growing up, acceptance and rejection and ultimately seeing the value of family and friends. It's really all we have as human-beings and defines who we are ultimately.

Good but not great by any means
22 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
After reading all the excellent reviews I gave the film a shot. Okay, it was a decent movie. If you allow yourself to buy the daughters ability to somehow telepathically see her fathers memories and then draw them, yea it is a decent movie and propels the movie towards its dramatic but still somewhat lacking finale. I just couldn't buy it. It seemed to me like it was part "A History of Violence(2005)" with a son inheriting his fathers killer instinct thru observation as well as DNA(?)(a more plausible story IMO), and other times like so many other movies about memory loss, like Momento. The whole movie depended on the young girl and her drawings and that was too big a leap for me. Good acting, but not Oscar level by no means, good sequencing and good music but a story hard to buy.

Launched 2 careers!
2 January 2012
I remember watching this when it came out in 1982. Normally a guy wouldn't watch a movie like this but both women were so beautiful! I know most would go for the blond Darryl, but I liked the brunette and remember thinking she would be the bigger star. As it turns out, Darryl's career took off with Splash and other big movies and Alexandra was no where to be found! I was glad she ended up on a very successful TV series Baywatch but I still always thought her talent and looks had been wasted. I have met both actresses in real life(just met Alexandra1/1/12 at the farmers marker in Pacific Palisades) and Darryl at the Brentwood farmers market 3 years ago and of the 2, Alexandra is a sweeter and nicer person by far.

I haven't seen this movie again since it aired but I do remember liking it. I believe it was the first movie for both actresses.

One for the Ages!
17 December 2011
Just finished watching this concert and all I can say is WOW! At 60+ years of age, every member of ACDC still rock their hearts and lungs out for a solid 2 hours! Unreal! And there are NO BALLADS to rest! lol The 200+ thousand fans jumping in unison was awe-inspiring and made you really FEEL the POWER OF ROCK! Yea, these guys won't be a round forever but this concert video will truly be a testament to how these ageless wonders of HARD ROCK never forget the fans and the passion that comes from being on that HIGHWAY TO HELL! Many of us have been following ACDC since the beginning when Bon Scott was the front-man and although we miss him, Brian Johnson is no slacker and his growly voice is perfect for belting out all these anthems of rock! I SALUTE YOU ACDC!

Some Fools just don't get Breaking Bad!!
30 August 2011
Some of the idiots who are rating Breaking Bad poorly and knocking it for stereotyping and poorly developed characters are just that..idiots. It is TV!!!! Of course most of it would probably NOT happen as it does on the show but when you are condensing LIFE into a 1 hour segment for television, it often WILL seem stereotypical! Yes, the lead character and his partner escape death too many times to believe and yes, some of the BAD guys seem to far-fetched(the 2 Mexican Hit-man) to believe but the show WORKS on so many levels if you approach it with a open mind and are WILLING to suspend some truths. I love the show and think that other than a couple of "writer's liberties" the show is dead on and very very entertaining! If you need absolute truth(all you who knock the show) go read some Dali lama books!!

Witness a Miracle..
16 December 2010
I only recently got in Leonard Cohen. Sure, I had heard of him from some minor airplay on college radio with songs like I'm Your Man and First, We Take Manhattan but I wasn't thrilled by his flat and monotonic vocals just like I was not really into Dylan but as I have reached an older age(50), I realized how powerful and deeply these men wrote and performed the songs that I can only now fully appreciate. This concert film was a revelation to me and after learning that so much chaos and disharmony had risen from the discontent from many who felt the greed of concert promoters and ticket sellers(much like what happened at Woodstock), I was amazed at how respectful the crowd was while Cohen performed. Was the crowd sleepy, worn out from the hysteria of a Jimi Hendrix set? Were they tired of the fight that they had endured to see this concert? Perhaps. And perhaps Leonard Cohen was the perfect medicine to sedate and harmonize that huge restless crowd that balmy windy night on the Isle of Wight. Take it in and realize that you have witnessed a miracle.

Powerful but Flawed message...
17 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Yea, this was a powerful movie about an young unhappy 1950's suburban couple. Was it the husband who made it thus or was it the wife? Was it her insistence on them leaving and re-sparking the idealism that attracted them in first place? Was it her dreams that she couldn't let go of? There is an old saying that "wherever you go, there you are". Bottom line is you can't hide from yourself. You can run to Paris, but when you get there you soon find out that it isn't the people or the place that makes you what you are, but it is what you are already! Yea, she wanted to become and actress, but would she of been a better actress in gay Paree? So often we think things will be better somewhere else, that the grass is greener. Hey, grass is grass no matter what color it is! Everywhere you go in this world, people are dealing and coping with life. No one can predict what might of happened in Paris had they moved there. When you dream, you mostly dream about the good stuff, the post card scenery but you forget that even in Paris they have slums. I liked the film for its performances but the bottom line is that you choose your life. You choose it every second. You can't UN-choose it or choose it in advance. You get what you get. All the crying and whining and complaining won't make a difference because when you get somewhere else, you will find plenty to complain about there after the novelty wears off. The subtle yet brilliant ending with the older couple and the husband that turns down his hearing aid as his wide babbles on, as his way of dealing with his life was probably missed by most viewers.

Myra accurately portrays todays Hollywood!
10 September 2009
Great groundbreaking movie that was so far ahead of it's time that it was trashed by critics and viewers alike! Perhaps only a handful of us get it! I think for the most part, the movie got across it's point that Hollywood was changing. The world was changing! Using Mae West to show that sex has been the driving force behind movie-making was brilliant! The old film clips are to convey the emotion or response of the viewer and were cleverly used. Most viewers have a limited range of intelligence and miss the point! The movie also was a very good take on the liberal attitudes that were taking over Hollywood at that time. A response to movies like Midnight Cowboy with their anti-heroes. They even mention that in the movie actors like Clark Gable and John Wayne are gone and have been replaced by this new breed of leading males. I think the movie was way ahead of it's time. Just look at what er have now running Hollywierd!

Could of been a contender!
16 July 2009
This movie came out almost 30 years after Rocky(1976) and yet THIS movie was almost like watching Rocky all over again! The Max Baer character was Mr. T and even did the Mr. T "why don't you come over to my apartment and I'll show you a real man" bit when they were in that fancy restaurant and he insulted Braddocks wife! C'mon! You know that did not happen back then! That was inserted by Ron Howard! And the turtles that Rocky had..Cuff and Link..remember those? And CM also had turtles! The down on his luck fighter who caught a big break and ended up winning a fight he had no business winning? I was really into this movie until the last 30 minutes when they made Max Baer look like a Mr. T clone! I wanted to really like the movie and it really painted a great picture of a man trying to keep his family together in really tough times. But the last 30 minutes ruined it. Too many similarities too Rocky even though this movie was supposed to be about a fighter from the 1930's! Another case of Hollywood recreating history as it DID NOT happen! It could of been a real winner if they had just kept it real. Go rent Champion(1949) starring Kirk Douglas. Thanks Ron Howard!

The love story was essential in this movie..
11 November 2008
Some reviewers suggest that the movie might of been better had the story of the Japanese girl and the navy pilots love affair not been a part of the movie, but I disagree. It was a very integral to the overall story in that it showed the indifference that was heaped on Asian people merely because of their race relation to the people who bombed Pearl Harbor. It was used much in the same way that a love story was part of the movie Titanic(1997) and made it a more interesting and compelling movie. If there wasn't something we could relate to in a personal way(such as a love story) then we might as well be watching a documentary and we all know those are usually quite tedious and boring to watch on a Saturday afternoon!

Never Tire of Seeing!
6 September 2008
Never get tired of watching this movie. It has such comic appeal as well as great writing and acting. I think it gets across a really good message. I loved Mel Gibsons performance and his dance scene to Frank Sinatra's " I Won't Dance" is amazing. I never knew he was that talented! All in all, WWW hits on all cylinders and holds up to repeat viewings as I have caught it many times on cable and no mater where it is in the movie I enjoy it. I know many people have an opinion about Mel as a person but in his acting roles he shines! From MAd Max to We Were Soldiers to What Woman Want, Gibson plays his roles as the character written for the movie and he does it brilliantly. I only wish he had had a chance to play Batman! 9/10

Masterpiece of Comedy!
6 September 2008
Many movies come along and many are labeled comedies even when they are not funny at all! This one is! The story is well conceived and believable. Things like this have and do happen. I know we all consider ourselves to sophisticated to get caught up in a pickle like these 2 kids in a small southern town but it could happen! I know that in the South there are people who act and talk like these people! I know that the Law is more a mans word and a handshake usually is all you need. Joe Pesci was brilliant and funny in his Brooklyn Guido type of way and Marisa was awesome as his girlfriend. She is downright beautiful and her lip-smacking style of talking was dead-on. She deserved that Oscar and not too many win Oscars for comedy but she proved you can do it and do it well!

Over-hyped and Convoluted
6 September 2008
seems like the comment on the front page was written by someone who must of been paid by the studio, Jesus! It wasn't that good dude! Get a life or at least get out of Malaysia! The movie was trying to be too many things. It should of focused more on just being a action movie and not so much psychodrama! Heath was brilliant but Nicholsons Batman was also great. I couldn't see myself watching this again. Once was enough! And the Batmobile was down right bizarre. It didn't look like something created by a rich man like Bruce Wayne. I liked the performance of Eric Roberts as well as Heath Ledgers. I believe the last batman was better. 7/10

as a followup on this day Aug 30th, 2011, I have watched the movie a few more times and YES it is a GREAT movie! If grew on me and even after I met Gary Oldman at a high-school football game and commented on how well this movie plays on repeated viewings because the acting is so good, he agreed. Heath was brilliant and the movie does work on many levels! I rescind my previous review!
